EDIT: N64-usf sound files - http://hcs.freeshell.org/usf.html

EDIT 2: If someone can get the Goldeneye.usf to work, please share with me how it's done. Only about 10% of the tracks work for me!

I've been spending a lot of time listening to N64 sound files (usf). I prefer the N64's electronic 80s-style sound vs. the pre-recorded PS1 stuff. Here are my faves:

MARIO 64 - a wealth of awesome music
Cave Dungeon
Dire Dire Docks - a nice melodic tune - I used to leave my N64 turned on just playing this tune
Koopa Road - I like how the tension builds on this one!
Koopa Theme

ZELDA - OCARINA OF TIME
The End Music

Star Fox 64- Star Wolf's theme, the multiplayer song when it's coming down the wire
F-Zero X-the whole damn thing
Majora's Mask-the song that plays when the moon is almost there

You sir, are correct. That song is almost too good for human ears. Almost.

*hums Gerudo valley song*

Goldeneye is up there too. Some great quality tunes.

I also love Gerudo Valley from OOT.

Super Mario 64 - I could leave the game on the select screen for an entire day just listening to that song. I also own the SM64 OST and I listen to that quite regularly.

Ocarina of Time - Great music throughout the entire game. I really like the Kakariko Village music.

Snowboard Kids 1/2 - You don't really hear about these two games nowadays but they both have an awesome soundtrack.

Conker's Bad Fur Day - I'd have to agree with everyone...The Great Might Poo's theme song is just great.

Banjo-Kazooie - Run of the mill adventure game soundtrack. Has never let me down.

Goldeneye 007 - Really good music which fits this game nicely.

There are just so many N64 games with great soundtracks that I can't list them all but I did list the titles that are stuck in my head. @_@

A few more that should be mentioned...

My SM64 favourite: the superb score from Jolly Roger Bay!

Also, the "Port of Adia" score from Turok 2 - seemed to fit the environment and action perfectly. There is a good rendition (http://www.ocremix.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR00157) of this over at ocremix.org.

Talking about Goldeneye, I used to play the Frigate level over and over because the music was so perfect for it :)

Finally, just about every track from Tetrisphere. Hard to believe that they only used 8-bit samples for that one.

It truly is amazing that most VG tunes that stick in my head are from non disc based consoles. :) :)

The great mighty poo's song is undoubtedly the best piece of music to come out of the N64. I also love the soundtracks to Mystical Ninja and Goemon's Great Adventure.

Personally, I am most fond of the music from Majora's Mask. It had the Zelda overworld theme, and the song of healing is fantastic. In fact, I think I need to listen to it now.

I would recommend games that other are, like Mario 64, Zelda, Goldeneye, and StarFox.

But most of all I wanted to say thanks because I didnt even know such a file format existed. I figures mp3 was my only option, as opposed to nsf, gym, spc, psf, etc. I listen to those a lot.

Conker's Bad Fur Day for me. I just love the quirky music.

My favorite N64 music is the Wonder Project J2 soundtrack. Sadly, it was Akihiko Mori's last game soundtrack before he passed away. I've been trying to get a copy of the OST, but boy do those Wonder Project albums get expensive.

I can't forget to mention the F-Zero X soundtrack, though. If not for nostalgia and my love for the Wonder Project series, this would my favorite N64 soundtrack. A few months ago I picked up the OST for about 20 bucks, and man, was it a GREAT buy. If you guys think it's good in the game, wait till you hear it in sharp, crystal clear stereo (the game is mono). I don't know why I'm writing about it here, though; I should be finishing up my review on it for Chudah's Corner. :P

N64 has stereo output. Why is the game in mono?

Wipeout 64 has great music, in mono too. Guess the lower quality audio uses less memory...music can't be streamed from the disc like in PSX games.

Actually, streaming music is possible on the N64, and that's what F-Zero X used. It allowed for better sound quality than in other N64 games, but due to space issues, it had to be mono.

Cruis'n USA: Redline Shuffle.

Lylat Wars/StarFox 64: End credits theme.

GoldenEye 007: Frigate theme.

Super Mario 64: End credits theme.

Mario Kart 64: End credits theme (one of my favourites).

F-Zero X: Mute City theme.

Blast Corps: The music from the Pac-Man levels.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: Gerudo Valley theme (another of my favourites).

Jet Force Gemini: Rith Essa theme (I also rank this game as having the best N64 soundtrack ever).

Penny Racers: Intro and ending themes.

Perfect Dark: The whole lot! Though Pelagic II gets a big thumbs up from me.

Pokemon Staduim: Gym Leader Castle theme.

GT64: Championship Edition: The menu music!

World Driver Championship: Again, the main menu music is cool.

Yoshi's Story: Wheeeee!

I am unable to get the "64th note" plugin for Winamp to work. I really want to hear these, but no luck. Any help?

Just about any Rare game and Mario 64. Also Mario Kart.

Actually, I loved how the music in the Poo level, he would sing as you battle. I can't wait to see how this is done in the remake on the Xbox.

Banjo music kicked ass. Tooie too.

Goldeneye music really set the mood.

For me it would have to be the Perfect Dark soundtrack. Psuedo James Bond done to perfection. Very atmospheric and the main theme is just class - love it! Followed by SM64 - that whole game is just perfection, a whole world to itself! Turok 2 OST is also pretty cool.

I was surprised to hear Zelda Ocarina of Time in surround sound! No I'm not kidding. Depending on how I moved, I could hear water directly behind me. I was impressed that they tried surround sound on a cart-based console.

Yeah I had problems too. 64th Note is VERY picky about where you put it (which directory), so read the readme file again, and make sure it's where it belongs.

Mario Kart 64: End credits theme (one of my favourites).

That brings back memories of multiplayer fun in Mario Kart 64. I usually won our games (until one of the casual gamers decided to devote his life to it, now we're pretty evenly matched), and then forced the other players to listen to the whole ending theme while posing as if it was the greatest accomplishment of all-time. Think several WWE-style poses and you've got the idea. Good times. LOL

Some SNES/SFC games even had surround sound actually. Star Ocean is awesome in surround sound. :)
