Ladies and gentlemen, I have had a revelation at San Diego's Comic Con! The revelation is this: I am an attention whore. So I thought to myself, "what's a good way to get attention that doesn't involve me getting arrested, on Fox, or both? Why, giving people free stuff for performing an aribitrary task, of course!"

First, let's see what wonderful things you can win! The Fabulous Prize Package consists of:

http://img59.exs.cx/img59/1951/summoner2.gif
Summoner 2 for the Playstation 2

That's right! I am actually giving away a copy of the most excruciatingly average action/RPG of the decade! And that's just the beginning! You'll also get:

http://img59.exs.cx/img59/9462/wildanimus.gif
A Book Some Guy Was Handing Out Outside of the Convention Center

It's called Wild Animus, and it's by Rick Shapiro, a.k.a. Some Guy Nobody's Ever Heard Of! It's about mountains, and animals or something! How could you pass up a once-in-every-thirty-seconds chance to get your hands on this? But we're just getting started! There's also:

http://img59.exs.cx/img59/3875/psm.jpg
Some Random Old PSMs

Have you been trying to forget Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness? Now you can have a constant reminder of what happens when a good series goes really, really bad right on your very own Room of Doom shelf! And you can decorate that room with:

http://img59.exs.cx/img59/7130/posters.jpg
A Couple Posters I Accidently Got Two Of

I haven't seen your living room, but I know for a fact that it doesn't have enough pictures of broken robots with sad basset hounds on the walls. The City of Heroes poster features characters created by three webcomics artists, including Scott Kurtz, author of PVP (http://www.pvponline.com/). The third is, as you can see, some nice art from Yasuhiro Nightow's new Trigun Maximum series. And yet, there's more! You'll also get:

http://img59.exs.cx/img59/4470/manga1.jpg
A Viz Preview Manga

This little book includes chapters from such titles as Imadoki, Video Girl Ai, Saikano, Megaman NT Warrior, and Beyblades, the manga about a bunch of kids who fight each other with tops for some reason!

And now, the feature prize-

The centerpiece of the whole collection-

Are you sitting down? You should be sitting down for this-

You're not gonna believe it, but I swear it's true-

You ready?

Here it is-

Are you sure you're ready for this?

The incredible, the unbelievable, the insurmountable-

INCREDIBLY UGLY NEO CONTRA POSTER!

http://img59.exs.cx/img59/7784/uglycontra.jpg

Altogether, these fabulous prizes are worth amost as much as it'll cost me to ship them to you!

"Now Dahne," I hear you saying, "nobody would give away things as fabulous as these for absolutely nothing. What's the catch?"

Well, my friends, the arbitrary task I'm going to have you undertake is this:

Amuse me.

But not just any kind of amusement. I require pretty pictures. But not just any pretty pictures. Simply,

Make a comic strip!

It can be long, it can be short. It can be as big or small as you like. The only requirement is that it have something to do with video games. You can add captions or word balloons, you can use sprites, you can dress up a bunch of your friends as goombas and make a comic out of the photos. Make it with Photoshop, MS Paint, or anything. Whatever you like!

The judging panel consists of me. As such, it is completely unfair and utterly biased. You can make the comic about any game you like, but you'll get extra Super Happy Smile Points if it's about a series close to my heart (hint: It begins with "M" and ends with "etal Gear Solid"). Of course, the most important part is that it be funny. So be funny! Post your entries right in this thread. Maybe if we ask Joe really nicely, we can even get a sticky. Right now there's just the one Grand Prize, but if there's sufficient interest, I might be able to scrounge up something fabulous for second place.

Deadline: Two weeks from now. Tuesday, August 10th, midnight. That way I should have plenty of time to get everything shipped before I have to start getting ready to leave for school.

You may begin!

Yes, that is an Xbox. Yes, this is a very cheap shot. Notice the METAL GEAR SOLID OMG WTF BBQ reference in panel 4. Also note that it's actually making fun of the Zero Wing bs, but you can't tell since the earlier ones aren't here. But that doesn't matter since the earlier ones suck. Actually, come to think of it, so does this one.

That was great bluberry! I have no comic skills, but I have to say this contest is great....extremely mediocre...which makes it great! I'm glad to see someone's not trying to give away top value prizes! I love it!

Looking through my old stuff, only two others have any sort of redeeming value. The others just flat out suck. The editing in 15 is horrible, though. And I would've changed a couple things about 24.

Reports on the web seem to vary. Apparently it is the second half of the Trigun manga, following Vash's blasting of the moon. But the manga and the anime are said to diverge from each other greatly.

Yeah, things like that happen. Then there's, say, Berserk, which reportedly ends on a cliffhanger because they made the anime before the manga series was done. LOL

The berserk manga has been going for about 15 years (since 89 i think) in young animal. They had alot of story to work with so their wasn't really a problem with how long the manga was/is. It's just because most animes have a 24 to 26 episode run (some having 13) in a series because people lose interest or they add something new to the time slot.

Years ago I had an idea to do a comic strip series based on the Bard's Tale games. This is one of the only ones I actually finished:

If it's alright to submit old strips (rather than creating them just for this contest) I'd like to submit this one. I just hope people get it. ;)

It is my understanding that the story is continued in the Dreamcast game Sword of the Bezerk, but I guess that doesn't count.

A while back I made several sprite comics using sprites from the Megaman games, but the comics didn't have much to do with Megaman and video gaming in general, except for this one, which parodied some of the stuff in Megaman 8...

In the comics which took place before this one, it was explained that it is Megaman's birthday, and because of the occasion, Megaman and Roll are getting ready to eat "out".

Hello, anyone remember me???

Okay, I need answers fast! I've been on family vacation in Maine and I haven't had access to the internet until now... Plus, I'm still in Maine, so my internet access is still limited.

Anyway, I am planning to enter this contest but I am unclear on the due date.

Deadline: Two weeks from now. Tuesday, August 10th, midnight. That way I should have plenty of time to get everything shipped before I have to start getting ready to leave for school.

Does this mean that I have ALLl of Tuesday to work on the comic until it becomes midnight (the day becomes Wednesday), or does this mean that I only have Monday to work on the comic (when it hits midnight, the day becomes Tuesday)?

I hope this post makes some sort of sense... I don't really have time to review it and make it sound... like English. Well... OFF TO A FAMILY BBQ!!

Ok... about the comics.

I was originally going to include a page in the comic that said all of this... but I ran out of time.

Let's see. The first thing I need to explain is the "good art section AKA- Pg 1." When I originally started the comic, I thought that I was going to ink and Photoshop the whole darn thing! Of course, I wasn't able to because of time. I heard about the contest right before my trip to Maine- I think I left on the 1st of this month. I really wanted to enter it and have my comics look really well. I even brought my computer up to Maine with me so that I could complete the comic up there. However, I didn't even try starting the comic until the 8th.
When I started drawing Pg 1, I realized that there was NO WAY that I could finish the comic in a couple of days if I was gonna' ink it and Photoshop it. Therefore, I decided to only do 1 good art page and have all the pages after that look lame... it was the only way I could complete the comic in time.
Well why does the art on the "good art page" look as bad/worse than the other art in the comic? Well... I left that page until the very end, and I rushed on it so that I wouldn't miss the deadline. I didn't even get it into Photoshop!!! In fact, if you look at all the art in the comic... from pg 3 on, it keeps getting worse and worse as you near the end. I was afraid of running out of time for this contest. Check out pg 10. Done like 15 minutes before midnight. UGGH!!!

Hmm... what else should I explain...

Oh, ok. On pg 7, you see a new character with spiky hair and glasses. This dude is Neb. This is how I've drawn myself in comics for a couple of years now... I was gonna' have Neb introduce himself in the beginning of the comic (a pg 0) and also explain what I am trying to explain right now (plus a little bit more). Maybe I'll finish that page some other time... Anyway, now you know who that guy is.

What else... Oh, also on pg. 7, I sorta stole someone's avatar (bluberry's) and had Ocelot shooting at it. Uhh... I would have asked permission first, but I WAS REALLY RUNNING OUT OF TIME! So I'll ask right now...

Dear bluberry,
Hi, I am Neb. You probably have NO CLUE who I am because I am a lame-o and I haven't posted on this forum in ages (I've been checking in on it frequently, however). I am participating in Dahne's Amazing Contest of Fabulousness and I would like to put YOU... well, at least your avatar... in it!
The thing is, I already did this! Usually this is something that I would ask permission for first, but the deadline for the contest was SO NEAR... I didn't get a chance. I didn't put your nickname above the avatar, I didn't know if you wanted people to identify you from my comic. I can easily add your name back in. OR if you don't like the idea of being in my comic at all, I can easily take that frame out of the comic. Just PM me!
Sorry that I didn't contact you first! Please don't be angry! Please don't beat me up!!!
-Neb

What else is there? Oh yeah! The quality of the comics is pretty bad. The whites are gray- it looks strange. If you want, I can post better ones. I haven't used a scanner on THIS computer to do stuff like this, and I wasn't sure what settings to use. If anyone wants, I can rescan them and Photoshop them until they look good.

Yeah... so basically I didn't do anything with my comics in Maine. I really only did like half a page. I got back yesterday at about 7 PM and worked for a couple of hours. I basically did the whole thing today, and even though the art is poor-in-quality, IT TOOK THE WHOLE DAY! Do normal comics take this long to do!? I'm exhausted. I did it all for the Contra poster. GOLLY! I hope I win!

If I think of anything else I'll add it here later....

Well... for those who waited for me to make this post- THANKS! Go look at my lousy art now!

~Neb OUT~

EDIT 1: Ok, I just read my comic on the computer monitor... AND IT SEEMS MORE CONFUSING THAN IT DID ON PAPER! Please, take your time when reading the comic, otherwise it might not make any sense. THANKS!

Tripod doesn't like direct-linking of images, so you gotta copy-paste the links. Also, your avatar is dead.

Neb
08-11-2004, 01:20 AM
Thanks, I wouldn't have realized that. The comic and avatar come in fine on the PC that I use normally, but I just went online with my older Mac and the images are blocked by Tripod...

I uploaded my icon to DP, so that should come in fine... but is there anyway to fix the comics so that they come up when you click on the links?

Probably not. We'll just have to copy-paste them.

Now, the representation from the Retrogaming Roundtable! Lots of entries here. Impressive, given that my less-than-ideal timing set this right during the Tribes conest. Yes, I know these are all already present here, but I'm putting them all into a nice, convenient list, because I feel like it.

So congraturations! You get all the prizes pictured in the original post (plus a couple more PSMs that turned up).

But there's a surprise.

Actually, it's a surprise to me, too. Along with two issues of the City of Heroes comic, to get you in the right mindset.
