View Full Version : Good places to find stuff in SE Michigan?

It seems that there are an unusually large number of collectors from Michigan here, and I was wondering if anybody could tell me some good places to find games at. Of course there are garage sales, etc. I am looking for permanent establishments. Gamestops no longer carry much of any interest, and I was looking for dealers of older stuff. Any tips?

What I always recommend is www.yellow.com .....may want to use a pop up blocker but just select your city, state, then enter video games for search criteria. Or pawn. Or thrift. It's what's worked for me =D.

There really aren't many establishments set up. I don't know how much help the yellow pages would be. Besides the standard Gamestop, EB Games, and now Blockbuster Game Rush, there aren't any really good stores that I know of.
There may be some hope though. In the next few weeks I'm planning on openinig a flea market booth. Details soon to come...

Yeah, I'm sure the SE MI collectors will jump forward and offer all their best spots.
Hey, I can tell you where Jimmy Hoffa is buried.

LOL
Yard sales have always been my best bet. Thrifts around here are way too popular, and you'll seldom find anything.

Well, I don't live in Southeast MI, but if you ever come to Lansing, be sure to check out Game Hits. They've even got a boxed Atari 5200 on display, complete with the original Kmart price tag. @_@

If it's like 90% of the stuff there, either way too much or uncharacteristically cheap.

Consider yourselves lucky you live in SE Michigan. I grew up in the U.P, and there are no gaming stores up there. No Funcos, no gamestops, and maybe an independant store, if you're lucky. *grumble* Thankfully, I escaped. Yay, me!

The Kmart price tag said $199.99...I dunno how much they'd really want for it. I remember them saying that their vectrexes sold for $100, same as their top-loader Nes's.

Yep, no gaming stores up here in the UP. As a Yooper all I have is the thrift stores and garage sales. But those have been treating me pretty good. Don't find all that much exciting but I've gotten some very good deals. All we have here in Marquette is one store that sells hippy stuff and bongs and porn and a few used video games. They charge up the ass for them though. Maybe I'll buy that Roger Clemens MVP Baseball for NES for $15. Super Mario/Duck Hunt... $8. What a deal!

I need to change my availability at work soon. I'm done with thrifting. I may check in occasionally but I KNOW the thrifts within a 60 mile radius and have been to them like crazy in the past year. Garage Sales and the local swap are my focus soon =D.

You guys really need to start driving down into downtown detroit and some of the trashier parts of Woodward. I used to find Atari's, Pico's, INTV, Microvision and Saturn stuff all the time. I don't live down there anymore and have no want to drive 60 miles so it's fair game.

Yeah I've been there myself. It's a cool store. They have lots of HTF stuff like imports, NGPC boxed games, and a Neo Geo AES. I talked to one of the sales guys there. For the older stuff, like Genesis, Sega CD, Saturn, they use the DP guide to price their stuff. However some of the stuff can be more expensive. They wanted $150 for a used Turbo Express. So while they got some really cool stuff, you won't find any good deals like you may find at a pawn or flea.
IMO, Your best bet in SE Michigan is the pawns. There aren't too many great fleas (I don't consider Gibralter Trade Center a flea). What I would do is go to Whitepages.com and type in "pawn" as the business name and every pawn will pop up in Michigan.
There aren't any Goodwills in SE Michigan. They are all out state areas like Lansing, Saginaw, etc. Salvation Army stores are more prevalent here. My problem is they usually have nothing, and when they do its usually a common Atari game or Genesis sports game that they $3/$5 respectively.
Garage sales are good this time of year, but I never find anything. Besides, I have better things to do on the weekends than drive around all day looking for an old console that I probably won't find. If you do go that route, you may want to try looking at the classifieds, including trading times. Sometimes they list the contents of a garage sale.
If you are looking for something specific, let me know. There is a decent import store on the eastside I can point you towards.
