PC Engine is a Japanese Turbo Grafx 16. So its a home console just like the Turbo Grafx. The PC Engine was a lot more sucessful than the Turbo Grafx and had a lot more games. Cost wise the PC Engine used to be fairly cheap but these days they run in the $50 range or maybe even higher I haven't looked lately.

It's a funky little Japanese console that was launched in 1986 and also released in the US as the Turbografx-16.

Definitely! The PC Engine/TurboGrafx line has loads of great shooters. In fact, R-Type really found it's first success on this system. There are lots of great titles like Dead Moon, Air Zonk, Soldier Blade, Super Star Soldier, Blazing Lazers, Sinistron, Aero Blasters... and those are just for the US system.

You can get a list of the shooters by highlighting "TurboGrafx-16" (which is currently inexplicably out of alphabetical order) from the system box, then highlight "Horizontal Scrolling" and "Vertical Scrolling" in the genre box here:

Have fun!

Why do you say that, did I miss something? I did get an e-mail from them just a few weeks ago - they were pretty happy that I had done some HuCard and Duo coverage in the Tips & Tricks Collector's Closet.

Did they recently "fold"?

You may well want to look at getting a Japanese PCE rather than a Turbografx - there are *hundreds* of games that didn't get a US release, and the convertor carts will probably cost more than a new console.
There's several different types of PC Engine, but the cheapest is probably the CoreGrafx or CoreGrafx II.
European importers will charge you through the nose, so you're probably best off looking at Japanese or Hong Kong mail-order sites if you don't want to go the eBay route.

There weren't very many of those side scrolling shooters like Gunner Heaven. They did have a Turrican which was US only release I believe and a few import games but noe of those were that great. Regular shooters there are lots for the system and argueably it's the best system for shooters. There was both a hucard and a CD R-Type.

Getting a Japanese system is generally the way to go. There's very few US released hucards games that have much text in them so the language barrier isn't a major deal. Plus all US CD games will work on an import machine.

There are some online places that sell PC Engine stuff but a lot of time it's cheaper to get stuff on Ebay.

PC Engine is defenitely a great system. I managed to pick up a system pretty cheap a while back and it works kind of good. There's tons of quirky little titles for it and pretty much all of em are really good. If you liked any of Hudson's games on the NES you'll probably love the PC Engine.

BIG mistake I think. I own both and I'm a big Neo fan in general, but the Neo CD is schlock. Get the Turbo/PCE Duo and be much happier. Or truly save your money and get a Neo Geo AES or MVS system.

Can anyone answer this?

Your probably thinking of the Japanese versus US release date.

Sorry for ressurrecting an old topic but it seemed to make more sense than starting a new one.

I'm nosing around for online retailers of Turbo Grafx and PC Engine games, particularly those who will ship to the UK. Has anyone got any good recommendations? I'm not after any titles in particular, just some good, cheap games to bolster my collection a bit and give me a taster for the system. :)

I could have sworn it was '87 myself actually.

R-Type, Gradius, Darius? PC-Engine has games for every genre, in spades!
