View Full Version : PS2 Action Replay AR MAX: Genesis Emulation

OK I give up.

I finally got my Action Replay AR MAX package, which, among other features, has an option to play Genesis ROMS from your PS2. Seemed like it would be fun, I followed the instructions to the letter (this involves using the AR application, installed from your computer, to transfer files from your PC to a CD) but the PS2 will not recognize my CD-R.

There's probably a FAQ out there somewhere that answers this question but a quick search for it turns up nothing.

Has anyone had any success with this? I'm thinking I need to use a specific brand of CD-R or something like that... ?

FWIW I own the entire Sega Genesis collection. I don't need ROMS but it would be nice to play the games that I own on another system that I own using software that I purchased to do so.

What kind of CDR media did you use? I wouldn't be surprised if the PS2 was picky about the kind of Media. I know for DC emulation some of my disk would work on one DC and not the other. Even if you have all the Genesis games I doubt you have all the import games aso you could at least try those out. I've got all the Megadrive roms for the DC and other than the sound and music most of them play great.

DP= Rom Whore

LOL LOL LOL

I got it right away. LOL It's ridiculous on the face of it. :)

It's probably the media you are using. I don't know what brands are more friendly though.

There's no bigger ROM whore than I, FWIW (for what it's worth, stands for "for what it's worth", hah).

My PS2 is particularly UN-picky when it comes to CD-R media brands, although I have noticed mine is somewhat picky when it comes to burning speed. I usually burn PS2 discs at around 12x or so and they seem to work great. Also, neither of my PS2's will read a CD-RW disc.

Hope some of that helps.

I have played genesis roms on an emulator on Ps2 before.

What do you need the PAR for?

Try another brand of cdr, and burn at lower pssed if possible (2x is fine)

I might be able to challenge you for the title of biggest ROM whore. :D I generally stick to Verbatim and TDK for CDR media and I rarely ever have any problems.

We love ya, Butta. But it really wouldn't be funny or "right" if the two of us didn't go at it on the topic of ROMs. I thought that's what you were playing at, so I responded in kind.

I'm very relaxed. In fact, I just finished masturbating.

We noticed. You have a little izz-jay hanging from your ose-nay. Suggest you take care of that before butta gets excited.

honestly, i'm a rom whore as well. and own way less games. in fact i sold most of my mvs stuff, only have about 10 games left. (they'll return later though)

me = biggest hypocrite on this site

if you do nothing but play romz and own no games, why should i have ever cared? it's none of my business.

UPDATE!

I got it to work. It wasn't the type of CD-R or even the speed. In the Media Creator program I just changed the recording type to "alternate recording method" and that did the trick. Before long I was enjoying Gunstar Heroes on my PS2.

Two issues outstanding.

1. The emulator isn't perfect but it's very good. My biggest complaint is that after several minutes on many games, the emulation breaks down and the game starts playing at a greatly reduced frame rate.

2. I have not been able to record more than 40 games on a single CD. Could be my system but it just hangs in the creation process if I got higher. The software itself seems to support 256 games, as the first time I launched it I exceeded that and it informed me of this max. Still, the unofficial max seems to be 40, at least on my PC.

Overall, pretty good stuff.

For anyone else who owns this, is there really any practical use for that USB savegame thingy?

Definitely. You should be able to use it to install HDLoader on your memory card. The other option is to burn a custom installer CD that will put the files on the memory card, but you'll need a mod chip or Swap Magic to do that.
