I'm in the planning phase for coming out to CGE again this year (hooray!) and I was wondering if San Jose is friendly to people without cars. If I can avoid getting a rental, that's just more money to spend on games! Is there a good selection of restaurants and entertainment close to the expo site? I'm not opposed to walking a few miles to get someplace, but if it's more than that a car is necessary.

Any advice will be much appreciated!

Well we have buses and lightrails here, but will need a cab to get downtown where the convention is. Not sure where you are staying but it might be easier and less of a headache to rent a car.

Heck yeah. Get a car. The Bay Area is a driving place unless you're in San Francisco. San Jose is just one place but of course you have Santa Clara, Cupertino, Sunnyvale, etc. just around.. you could check out the homes of Atari, Capcom (Golfland arcade in Sunnyvale is a place where Capcom used to playtest Street Fighter machines), or if you care.. companies like Nvidia. And of course you have San Francisco just an hour away down the 101.

Living in downtown, I can say that its very walker friendly. However if your not staying near the convention center, its just easier to get a car/use mass transit (cause lightrail is all over downtown). If you are all up for traveling about there is much that you can do in the SJ area. Besides what NE146 said, there is also Great America ( a Paramount Amusement park so if u have ur WOW card, thats free admission) and Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is just over the hill and about 35-30 minutes w/o traffic. Since its very near the University (Go SJSU!!) there is a shitton of Bars nearby. Also on 1st and 2nd street are numerous clubs, which will be hopping. SJ is also home to eBay's campus and Googles home isnt too far off either. A 15 minute car ride will take us to Apples main offices. Weve got plenty to do really.

Well I'm probably gonna take the light rail myself.
