Try searching this thread previously. It has been done 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 000000000000000000000 times over.
My opinion is a gamecube though.

Do yourself a favor and use that money on a gamecube, unless you have one already. If so, then go with a PS2.

Buy more good games for your GameCube.

If you don't want to do that, go buy a PS1 since most of the good PS2 games are PS1 games.

You have to be THE biggest fan boy on the board......... and i love it! I also have 2 gamecubes but one is a LE one that I never opened. I gave away my 3rd cube to my little neighbors cause there parents wouldnt buy them one, and they really wanted one.

But I would strongly suggest buying an xbox over ps2. I NEVER play my ps2, occasionaly xbox, always gamecube. But I would agree to buying more cube games.

Buy both. With the $160 windfall, it's like your own "buy one, get one free" sale. :)

Xbox. No doubt about it. Most of the PS2 games are bull. Junk. And most of the good ones come to the Xbox anyway and are usually better on the Box. Only exceptions are Final Fantasy games, Jak games and any games and stuff made by Sony's crones.

So either an Xbox and a game, or a few more Cube games.

Go get some more Gamecube games! There are plenty of good ones for 20 bucks a pop. Some that come to mind are F-Zero GX, Metroid Prime, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Sonic Mega Collection, Animal Crossing, Soul Calibur II, and plenty more(it's late, I can't remember 'em all).

If you really, really like PC-style games, FPS's and playing online, go for the XBox. If you prefer single-player games, especially RPGs, go for the PS2.

Neither has had many really great games in a while - all the really neat innovative stuff seems to head Cubewards - but the PS2 has one more thing going for it:

Snake Eater.

Drooooool.

Go for the xbox. Modding it opens up a world of wonderful things. The only square rpg I have beat on ps2 is ffx and it was pretty good. All other square games I have not seen a reason to buy.

Get a dreamcast its cheep too as are the games. Eb has a specialgoing on, when you buy two dc games you can get a system for $10. Plenty of good games, plus if you still want too you'll still have enough for a Ps2 as well.

PS2>Xbox

PS2 all the way. Get an Xbox an you'll be scratching your head in front of the game shelf. IMO only like 5 games worth getting. While companies still bend over backwards to support Sony you'll find some great games many with better extras than other systems. With that said I would still buy more Gamecube games it being the best system.

I suppose it depends on what games you like to play. My personal opinion is that games released on both the Xbox and PS2 look better on the Xbox port. So unless there are a buch of PS2 exclusive games that you want to play I'd say go Xbox. Plus, you won't have to purchase an additional memory card and the Xbox Live service is pretty nice if you want to play games online.

xbox

only reason to get a ps2 would be for some of the nice imports it gets.

Get an Atari...

No, seriously, there's only one way to go: compare and contrast. Make a list of "must-have" titles that interest you for each console and the one with the most titles win. If the list is almost equal in length, then either pick the console with the must-have games that you feel you want to play the most, or simply flip a coin. Of course, Arcade Antics' 2-for-1 idea works too.

I agree that this is the best way to do it. Just go to ign or some other site with game reviews and peruse the x-box and ps2 lists. Whichever system has the most games that you want to play is the one that you should get.

I already have an Atari and a Dreamcast. But now I'm starting to think I should just spend the money on games.

Better on the Box, true...but best on the PC, and anything on the Box is usually on the PC, too.

There ya go. When it doubt, support what ya got.

If you really want a new console, why not rent one and a couple games you might like? That way instead of just reading about it or watching videos, you can experience it.

As unbiased as I can be (I dislike SCEA in a big way) the PS2 has a huge library with tons of support local and abroad along with probably the most exclusive titles available to a game system. It's one of those "if you can think of a genre, PS2 probably has it" situations. Plus if you have a PS1 and don't want the hardware clutter, PS2 is backwards compatible. For sports games, PS2 also seems to get the big end of the stick with exclusive specials like Madden 2005's collector's edition that comes with loads of extras (like a lot of classic Madden games from the Genesis, PS1, etc.). If you are into platformers, sports or RPGs, look no further. On the downside: it's the oldest of the consoles and it's starting to show. Load times can be horrible, graphics tend to be a bit "bleh" compared to the Cube or Xbox (unless the developer knows how to use the PS2 hardware-see also Konami and MGS 2).

Xbox started out a bit as a niche system but is starting to gain some serious momentum. Now getting its fair share of ports and decent exclusive titles, it's a pretty good system. For the console FPS fan, you can't go wrong with the 'box and racing titles are becoming more bad-ass as time goes on. Project Gotham Racing 2 is an awesome example of a fun racing game anyone can get into. Xbox Live, even though I found I'm not real big on online gaming (at least with the people I ran into, but that could be just my timing) I can't deny that it is solid and easy to use. I had the low end Charter broadband package (about 256K, if I'm not mistaken) and there was hardly any lag. Then there is the hard drive, so you don't need memory cards and you can rip songs from your music CDs so you can just listen to the songs without yanking out discs or you can listen to your fave songs in the many games that support it.

Xbox downsides: seems a bit heavy on FPS games, is light on RPGs and does not have a lot of exclusive titles to make it stand out amongst the triad of systems. Typical responses when someone thinks of Xbox are "It's got Halo", "It's got Ninja Gaiden" or "It gets the best version of a multiplatform game". Being an American/Not Japanese system it doesn't get a whole lot of major publisher support from Japan (though that is gradually changing) so the likely hood of quirky Japanese titles landing on the Big Black Box are slim.

Plus thing weighs about ten tons and can kill a small pet if it falls on 'em LOL

i just got a refurb xbox from EB for $119, and picked up the following scouring around the stores:

halo ($25 @ circuit city)
project gotham racing 2 ($25 @ CC)
crimson skies ($25 @ CC)
panzer dragoon orta ($10 ebay)
crazy taxi 3 ($5 ebay)
rallisport challenge 2 ($25 @ best buy)
knights of the old republic ($20 @ best buy)
jet set radio ($10 @ FYE...original version - w00t!)

only game i paid full price for was ninja gaiden (well worth it), and though i'm not a huge FPS fan, chronicles of riddick is quite good (a great "turn the lights out" game for people like me that hate resident evil/etc.), and is at target for $35 until sat.

there are a TON of xbox games out there right now that haven't hit "platinum" yet that are great deals. i bought an xbox on launch day, and there just wasn't enough to hold my interest for a while (got halo, gunvalkyrie, JSR, rallisport), so i sold it, but after liquidating tons of old consoles, i took the plunge and got the 'box, and i've got more than enough to keep me from having a life right now... :D

If yoI would recommend Playstation 2.

why you ask? The games coming out this year!

With Gran Tourismo 4 ( It has street and ralley racing, plus online play), Metal Gear Solid 3, Grand Theft Auto San Adreas, Winning Eleven 7, Gradius 5, Star Ocean 3, Kill Zone, Rachet and Clank 3, it has somthing for everyone.

There are only 2 xbox games i am looking foreward to: Halo 2 and Jade Empire ( and you might as well wait to get those at a cheaper price). There are seriously 5 good Xbox exclusives : Halo, Ninja Gaiden, Rallisport Challange 2, Riddick, and Project gotham racing 2.

PS2 is the better chpoice for a gamer.
