Is destroying old video game carts or cds a total crime and waste of time, or a good way to get rid of crap?

Its a crime since you can always give them away. Dump them off at good will if you must but don't just toss 'em.

I think that if you need to investigate or want to know something about the internal parts of the cart is ok, also if you have the same cart twice and want to do something. Maybe itīs a crime for example if you find a cart in the street and broke it or have one in your house and destroy it without reason. Sell it!

destroying carts is a waste since the shells can be used for homebrew projects, esp the 2600, 5200, vectrex and colecovision shells. does the world need all those copies of super mario bros./duck hunt? perhaps someday there will be a NES homebrew scene. as for CDs thats another matter, i'd trash a scratched copy of a madden game anyday.

This is a shame too especially for those of us who grew up on them and want to and are collecting carts for collectability and gaming. Also tends to erase a big part of our gaming past too- many the gamers now only know of the big 3 systems and very little of systems before the PSX and even the N64.

On a related subject, is it me or has the switch from cartridges to compact discs made it a whole lot tougher to collect and maintain games? It seems like whenever I buy a Playstation game at a pawn shop, it's ALREADY destroyed before I've even taken it home. Plus, it's extremely difficult to keep the games in good condition if you plan on using them. CD technology has improved the gaming experience, but it's been bad news for collectors.

Yea, I think it's a crime, but there's nothing I can really do about it. To each his own.
Does anyone remember the Nintendo Power letter/art that someone sent in about 2 or 3 years ago? Someone took all these SMB/Duck Hunt carts and painted them orange and white and placed them in the shape of Jump Man Mario?

If anyone wanted to stop Funcoland from destroying the carts, maybe every single person that is complaining now should have been there everyday last year to buy up all the Maddens & etc. before they met their doom. What is said now about the situation is in retrospect. Whatever carts they smash up from now until the end of the world, just know that you can make a difference in the life of that cart, buy going everyday and buying up all the Madden 96 for Genesis, SNES, or the SMB/Duck Hunt carts. "Well I already have that one..." Fine, buy it and take it to Goodwill and make a donation. This is what people have been saying all along.

I've never destroyed a cartridge, and I think it's kind of a waste, for the same reason cited above by Christian. Carts are a renewable resource when it comes to homebrews.
I also think Maneki's got a good point about CDs. They're far easier to scratch or even wear out through routine play. I can't help but wonder if sealed copies of non-rare PSX games will go for ridiculous sums in the future, just because collectors want them in pristine condition. Maybe I'll pick up that shrink-wrapped Xenogears at my local EB . . .

Heck best way to get carts for homebrews is buy a bulk of SMB/Duck Hunts at Funco or somewhere.
Me, I'd really like to see cart formats saved or stored somehow- cart format really is how we started on video games, before cds got popular and by "erasing them" it kinda erases a bit of our pasts.

I don't collect CD-ROM based media because of that reason.. I collect the data on those items and maintain a collection threw CD-R's. This also free's up a ton of capital for collecting Carts. And really there were just to many games that I wouldn't purchase that cost $120+ like Dragoon Saga.

I think it's a crime to destroy any video game unless it's already broken.
