View Full Version : Why I love ATLUS!

Until recently, I was a rabid Working Designs fan. In many aspects I still am! But Atlus has been taking charge with its continous onslaught of quality games.

First I applaud them for taking the releasing unique and obscur titles. For example, "Cubivore" for the Gamecube. The game is so unique that it really HAS no specific genre.

Additionally, Atlus produces games in a variety of genres, rather than just limiting themselves to just one. It is true that they mainly focus on RPGs and Strategy RPGs, but they expand their horizons by producing other games such as Snowboard Kids, Super Dodge Ball Advance, King of Fighters EX 2, and more!

Sure the company is still relatively new (started last generation, I believe, correct me if I'm wrong), but they have been continuosly pumping out smash hits that are accepted by the gaming community at large! The Ogre Series, the Persona series, Disgaea *swoon*, and the new Shining Advance seres are just the tip of the iceberg.

It only promises to get better with titles like the anticipated Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga for PS2 and the new NDS line that is in the works (Shin Megami Tensei DS (RPG), Snobow Kids DS (Sports), Kaduceus DS (Action), Jensei Game DS (Board Game), Choro-Q DS (Racing) - list pulled from UseNet)

Correction: ATLUS (of America) is a division of ATLUS (japan). ATULS japan is known for their highly popular MegaTen series which dates back to the famicom. I believe ATLUS the publisher started up to localize their games here in the US but ironically enough they leave many of their own games in Japan and focus on other people's title's instead.

The oldest ATLUS localized game I own is Demon Slayer Revalations for Gameboy color. (:

But yeah great company.

Thats probably why I've never heard of any pre-N64/PSX ATLUS titles. It would be interesting to find out what title were brought over before the last generation and localized here by a different company.

Thanks for the enlightenment :)

Didn't Atlus either make or pubish Run saber on the Snes? I mainly like Atlus for Shin Megmai Tensei and made it into the 3rd or 4th most popular RPG series. Too bad very few of them ever got localized.

digitalpress and AdamG both have separate hidden contests. Whatever their requirements are, it's possible for one post to fulfill both.

I'm just generally confused by the whole hidden scoring thing. I feel like I'm on an episode of Whose Line Is It Anyway? :)

Atlus gave me Tail Concerto. *hugs Tail Concerto* That alone is reason enough to love them. Plus I like their localization style. Only Natsume does a better job, in my opinion.

Atlus US are, to my opinion, a brilliant picker of titles to publish. Snowboard Kids, Ogre Battle 64, Double Dragon Ex, River City Ransom Ex, Cubivore... the list goes on. I guess I'm a bit of a sneak Atlus fan at heart... I even got a cheap copy of Go Go Hypergrind just to see what it was like.

Of course you then can't forget the Japan side, publishing Cave's excellent shooters such as DonPachi, DoDonPachi, Guwange and so forth. Cave, of course, have a special place separate in my heart because Cave was formed from the relic that was Toaplan, and Toaplan did Flying Shark :D

Yes but they did Virtual Hylide on the Saturn. :embarrassed:

Virtual Hydlide is an Easter tradition in our house. o_O Don't ask why... no on knows. All the buddies come over and we just sit there watching my boyfriend's brother play through it and laugh our asses off.

I think the Tactics Ogre series is reason alone to choose Atlus. ARGH why did I have to pick just one tribe?!

Yes but I'll bet he'll never be able to play through all the randomly generated worlds.

Ah, yes, very cool feature in that game.

You gotta give it to the Hydlide series. As unplayable as the games seem sometimes, they do offer a lot of innovative interesting concepts.

As unplayable as the games seem sometimes,

This might be kind of pathetic but I used to own Hylide for the nes, no clue where the cartridge is now though, and I couldn't figure out how to leave the first "section" of the game. I figured either the game just really sucked or I was incredibly stupid. I've avoided the series since. x_x

I don't remember the beginning being that hard. Getting that first level up was pain. You could easy be killed in one hit. I had to abuse the save and load feature a bunch of times. I thought you had to search a tree and find something or go to a cave but I haven't played it since I owned it as a kid.

Atlus is another one of my favorite companies. I love how they're willing import great games like Disgaea, Cubivore, River City Ransom EX, Shin Megami Tensei, etc. that most companies wouldn't even think of bringing to the states. I just wish they made more copies of these games. I always try to buy Atlus games ASAP, becuase I always get the feeling that they're not gonna be there.

Azazel

Actually technically thety haven't bought Shin Megami Tensei here just some of the off shoot gaiden games liek Persona 1 and 2. The actually Megaten games are much better. :D

I knew nothing about Atlus before this contest. Now I understand why everyone is always looking for Disgaea. I just wish I had the foresight to get a copy!

Azazel

you would think Atlus would learn from there mistakes and maybe do a slighty higher print run for there games.

I always get the impression they do enough to make a good profit and that's it... regardless of the fact they could sell more, the whole stock issue might be a tricky one.

Azazel
08-06-2004, 07:04 PM
I'm sure they make a fine profit. I'm just talking about a small increase. Even if they had some leftover stock they could just Ebay it and get more money that way and there profits would still be slighty better than with a slighty lower production run. I'm sure some people will hate me for saying that abotu the auctioning part.
