View Full Version : Why I love Tecmo

I mostly love the old Tecmo.

Sometimes love can be about that one defining feature. For me that feature was the beautiful Tecmo Super Bowl. The innovative title that showed the world how to make a sports game. With real NFL and NFLPA licensing and simple game play. They pioneered the season mode and kept track of your stats. To this day when friends come over that little gray blinking box gets turned on to display Tecmo's greatest accomplishment for hours into the night.

Something must be said for a sports title that has remained a fan favorite for so long when most are forgotten only a year later.

Without a doubt the best Ninja. Tecmo also showed me horse racing can be a fun and addicting game.

No doubt, Tecmo had a ton of great games. Just look at tecmo super bowl, the demand for that game is almost as much as when it's original release time. A definite great game maker!

I think the thing that I like about Tecmo the most is that they've been pretty consistent. Tecmo doesn't always have my favorite games, but 9 times out of 10, I know if I pick a game up with the Tecmo name on it, I'll be able to pop it in and enjoy it, whether it's my favorite or not.

This will probably be more and more important in the future as the market gets flooded and checking the label becomes more important.

I like the Deception series.

It's definately different, and has some very cool gameplay, even though the whole idea is kind of sadistic. Oh well, there's a special kind of joy in setting things up juuust right to knock a guy down the stairs onto a spring-loaded floor panel that deposits him in the perfect place to be squashed by a spiked rock from the ceiling.

Currently, I have one main reason I love Tecmo....

"I only play it for the fighting."

"I appreciate the expansive multi-tier environments and the 16 characters with the pixel shading 'bump-mapping' and the rich plot development."

"Serriously, why else would I play it?"

"She kicks high."

besides the high kicks the DoA series IMO really is the best 3D fighter. It has surpassed the Tekkens and Virtual Fighters of the world and saved Tecmo finacially.

I haven't played any Tecmo games that have come out since they made the jump from 8 to 16-bit, except for DOA 3. I'm not a fan of fighting games, really, but I had a lot of fun playing DOA 3 with a group of friends. The girls all liked it because the women had different costumes that you could pick from LOL . Plus, there's a sick genious in the phrase "This can only be settled by fighting", one I use on my girlfriend quite a bit.

That said, I will say that while I loved all the NES Tecmo games when I was a kid, the true genious of them really became apparent as they aged, like a Massive Attack album or something. I'm sure the name Rygar gets rise out of a lot of people (in a good way!) I beat the crap out of that game in about an hour every time I play it, and I still love every minute of it. Why? Don't know. It's quirky and strange, full of bugs...but I think the presentation is just right. The setting of the game is wierd and mythological, and the fact that the only communication you have with the game is cryptic comments from mustachioed Buddha-lookalikes probably adds some mystique. Plus, all the environments are makedly unique and colorful. I'm always a sucker for the multiple-perspective thing, and the interspersed overhead and side-view scenes really do it for me, especially in an adventure game. (Remember Golgo-13?)

Mighty Bomb Jack has many rewards for those who can get far enough. I've never beat it, but I've noticed that the levels start to get pretty non-linear the further you get into them. That was a unique thing back then. That puts quite a bit of mystery into the game. Plus, who doesn't love being able to jump a screen and a half vertically?! The game stood the test of time...who would have thought?

All I can say about Soloman's Key is that I don't think I've ever played a game quite like it (although, I understand there's a sequel called Fire and Ice).

Ninja Gaiden--here's an interesting one. This game pretty much invented the concept of cinamatics in a console game, as far as I know. When it came out, I and everybody I knew were DYING to find out what happened in the next cut scene. It was the reason you played it! Later, the biggest attraction of a game on CD-ROM format (especially if it was Japanese, and even more so if it was an RPG) was the promise of the wonderful animated cinemas. Now I feel it's gotten a bit excessive. Designers seem to be using cinematics to replace having a decent game in there anywhere. While I thought Metal Gear Solid 2 was damn near flawless, a lot of people complain about the amount of cut scenes, and that they detract from the game. So, where do you draw the line? I will say that, all in all, I am quite less impressed with the cinematics in games games but I think that's because I don't care for the whole 3-D rendering thing...I want some real animation! These used to be selling points from games, now they're viewed as detractors...what's the deal?

Nothing has ever come close to replicating Tecmo Bowl's fun factor. As cool as some of the modern day football games are, I couldn't care less about the player's "crib" or other dumb add-ons. I find many of the newer football games have too many options, too many buttons, too many angles and it's impossible to rush the ball. I wish Tecmo would come up with an updated version for new gen consoles. I did notice that they released one for mobile phones. Unfortunately it won't work with TMobile.

My first tecmo game was Ninja Gaiden, which I got when I first got my NES in the Christmas of '89. Still have it and love it and NG2 and 3 to this day. Tecmo Bowl never quite did it for me, but when I had tecmo Super Bowl at one point I loved that game and would play it non-stop!

All i can say is RYGAR and the arcade version is insane. Still havent got anywhere in tha arcade version. I love them more when the work on the GameCube. It seems that they hate Nintendo now, even tho i dont think they (Tecmo) would be around without them (Nintendo) .

Yeah I don't know what their deal with Nintendo is. I don't think they even did a N64 game did they? I read an article that said the Xbox was their favorite system to develop for. The Dead or Alive 4 and the Ninja Gaiden are in development for the next Xbox.

rscaramelo:

Tecmo did try to make a new Tecmo Bowl in 1999 and in 2001 but was unable to get the NFL and NFLPA licenceses.

I'm pretty sure they didn't do a N64 games. I remember the arcade Rygar. I could get fairly far into it but never got good enough to beat it.

Yeah the comment was something along the lines of they would have to be forced at gunpoint before they would make games for the ps2 again. I don't blame em either. they look great and sell well, whats the incentive to move?

rygar for nes is one of the best.that game needed a password or battery.there was no way to save.you really had to be hardcore to beat that game back in the day.

Tecmo Super Bowl- a real football game when football games weren't base dentirely on stats and graphical glamor.
