So I was looking around on ebay and found some auctions by a guy that lives in a town about a 20 minute drive from me. So, as I have done before in this situation with other sellers I send him an email asking about picking up the games rather than having him ship to me. I've had people say no before so that doesn't bother me but his response about using shipping to make money really did.
Here is his response:
"You would still have to pay the shipping :) That's obviously how I make my
money when I list most of my auctions at 49 cents. Justin"
Why not list your games at the price you want to sell them for and not jack up shipping.

oh well....just dont buy from him...or get it shipped...at least some of the shipping money you would spend would go to the post office instead of him

Have him mail the package to different addresses to cut down on his profits.

Punch me in the face if I am wrong :P But isnt that against ebay policy ?
And if so , I would report his ass. Save the e-mail as proof

(1) Can someone show me the ebay rule that was violated?
(2) Given the current cost of gas, you'd spend $3 making that roundtrip. Plus time wasted. I think I'd rather choose mail shipment.
(3) If the game cost 49 cents, and free pick-up, the seller would lose money:
0.49
-1.00 ebay fee
- 1.00 paypal fee
=======
about 1.50 lost
I understand why the guy does NOT want to do that, but he was supremely stupid to admit it.

If he was picking it up, why would he use Paypal? That brings the sellers "fees" down to just eBay's.
Sellers may not charge eBay buyers an additional fee for their use of ordinary forms of payment, including acceptance of checks, money orders, electronic transfers or credit cards. Such costs should be built into the price of the item-this policy reduces the potential for confusion among bidders about the true cost of an item. Further, some forms of payment surcharges, such as credit card surcharges, are forbidden under the laws of many states, including California.
Can a seller add a surcharge to the final price of an eBay item? Yes, in three instances:
* Sellers may charge a reasonable shipping and handling fee to the final price of their item, providing that this fee is disclosed in the listing. A shipping and handling fee can cover the seller's reasonable costs for mailing, packaging and handling the item. Shipping and handling fees cannot be listed as a percentage of the final sale price.
* Sellers may pass along the costs associated with using escrow, if the buyer chooses to use escrow. Use caution when considering escrow. To avoid being deceived by fraudulent escrow services, use www.escrow.com, eBay's approved escrow service.
* Sellers may choose to accept payment in a different currency than the currency listed on eBay. If the buyer chooses to take advantage of this optional payment method, the seller may pass along to the buyer any costs associated with the currency exchange, provided that the costs are disclosed and agreed to in advance by the buyer.

Okay. The seller would still be 50 cents in the hole. I can understand he does not want to lose money.

So the $1 ebay fee + $1 paypal fee is the "handling fee" and CAN be charged.

Why can't everyone just look at the final cost of the product (the item plus any shipping and handling costs) and decide if the item is worth that much or not? If its worth the final total then who gives a rats ass how the money is divided up? If it isn't worth it then don't bid.
We all know why people sell low and include higher handling costs. It's been discussed to death here already and while we can complain about it until the cows come home its not going to change a thing. Handling fees are allowed by ebay, surcharges aren't but there really isnt any way to tell them apart if the seller doesn't want you to be able to.

Well if you pick up the item there are no handling fees as far as I know. The ebay rule broken is called fee avoidance. Yes this seller can and should be reported. If the seller was worried about fees he should have start the auction at a higher bid price. It's his own fault if the item sells for less than his costs.

On a .49 cent auction, the ebay fee is nowhere near a buck, and the Paypal fee is pennies. .49 is still too low to make money, but it's not even close to a 1.50 loss.
As for why fee avoidance matters: Sellers who play fair will have their items seem more expensive to the buyer who's just scanning listings, thus their items won't be looked at, thus less sales for honest sellers. Further, if you use ebay's service as a seller, you have a moral responsibility to follow what I consider a fair rule. If a store in your town avoided paying payroll and sales taxes and advertised a lower price, other stores in town would quite rightly be mad as hell.

Well it's something like .30 listing fee, .05 or .10 buy it now price if you use it, the final ebay fee based on what the auction ends so maybe .03 based on .49 ending bid. The paypal fee is like 3% of whatever you receive which would be about .03 or so. So the fees combined would be about .45 or so.

Pay-pal has a minimum fee, then it's 3%. I think the minimum is like $.35

I myself sell games on ebay and hate it when sellers overcharge for shipping.
there was one guy who was selling a lot of n64 instruction manuals, about 10 of them. I won the auction for $1 then he tries to say the shipping is now $13. says the cost of materials and stuff. BS. then he sends it 1st class which was only $1.83 plus the envelope which wasn't even a padded one.
how's that?

Well the auctions I were looking at weren't his .49 ones either it were his genesis ones which ranged from 1.49-4.49. And like I said it doesn't bother me that he said no it bothered me the way he said that was "obviously" how he makes his money. Did a check and 6 out of the 8 auctions I want ended with no bids (so he's losing money that way now)

1 dime -or- 2 nickels. Same difference; different selling methods. I see no reason to get all bent out of shape, because one seller charges $1.00 + $5 ship -versus- another charging $5.00 + $1 ship.
1 dime -or- 2 nickels. It all comes out the same.
