The more I play this game, the more I'm convinced that Metal Slug 3 cannot be beaten. Even with the difficulty set on easy and using the continue on controller 2 trick, I still can't get past the 4th level. I can usually get past the first 2 levels without dying, but 3 is where I start to loose it. 4 is just too overwhelming and I can barely make it half way thru the level.
Has anyone beat this yet? If so, you must be inhuman and *PLEASE* give me some tips. I love this game so much but it's driving me fucking mad!

Well, I rented it for one night the other week, and got to the last level's final boss. I almost beat it, but I had to return it the next morning.
Next time Metal Slug..Next time.

The Xbox limits your continues, a non issue for the emu and AES/MVS crowd.
The game does indeed raaaaawwwwk.
Didn't seem too hard. Not to tease or anything. :P

Pffft, that doesn't count! If you want a real challenge, try playing the Xbox version where it brings you back to the beginning of the stage each time you continue. :P
Hellvin, you *rented* this and got to the final boss??? Unbelievable. I've been playing MS3 on-and-off for several months now and can't even get close to that.:embarrassed: What is your secret? Play with 2 players? I always play it by myself.
^ I do belive gray fox said that. Hellvin played it on kawax.

You're right. Sorry. There should be a rule against 2 people using the same avatar. Too confusing. ;)
Gray Fox, you are a machine.

I haven't finished it on xbocks.
I only play until I die 3 times, for high score.
If you can clear the first 2 stages all pows (no deaths), including going through the ice cave in level 2, it's a nice accomplishment, and a nice score.
Those aliens can be bitches though...

Hell no. I have been playing it for a few weeks now, and I can get to the last boss on level 4 and that is it. I hear that stage five is very long and difficult. I can't wait. Anyone who can beat the XBOX version of MS3 on Very Hard mode is a god, and that's in arcade mode, not level select.

I beat it. My friend Brandon and I tried for about 2 weeks, and finally managed to get through the final level on easy. VERY rough, but a hell of a fun time.
The trick is to get through the first half without dying. That's really about all I can think of-the rest is just knowing the enemies, where they are, and what their patterns are.

I beat it on Hard, got up to Mission 4 on Very Hard. The only annoying thing was the extra-long Mission 5, playing twenty minutes of stuff you've memorized over and over for another shot at a twenty segment bit. Also, it ruins the co-op mode.

Forget about it. Since you start at the beginning each time I have NO IDEA how the hell anyone would be able to finish the last stage.. it's too long! ...Unless you sit there and become the allmighty metal slug skillz guru :P
Better just mod and play the Metal Slugs via Kawa-X for Xbox Metal Slug action.

Yeah, butta. I saw your high score on the Live scoreboards a while ago...1,800,000 something? Pretty amazing. Did you do that by yourself or did you play co-op with someone? I can just barely crack the 1,000,000 mark on easy with 5 lives.

No way. Really?
I don't even worry about my score but so long as I don't continue, I can hit five or six million easily. It helps that the last level is worth about three mil. Then again, levels one and two don't have many chances for points.

Only me playing. The first level is pretty simple to clear no deaths, take the boat path for the most pows, and finish with the slug for a score near 800k after the first level. I'm usually around 750-760k but it is possible to get 800k on the first level. Second level is much tougher, you have to really be patient and not make mistakes against the zombies, and the ice cave is even tougher. But the key is patience. Then there is the boss, which takes great timing to get through the first part of. I've only cleared the first 2 levels on normal without dying, a couple times.
bluberry, you can get 6mil on one credit on normal starting from level 1? If so, that's pretty impressive.
collector, that's some great artwork. who drew it? ;)
edit: here's a site with hints to get some extra points.

Yeah, that site has a lot of the things. But later on in the game, the game literally just vomits points at you. You can literally earn a million points in mission five before you even fly into the mothership. Way more if you destroy all the asteroids, the big ones go down from just two shotgun blasts. Also, a lot of the secret items give like 50,000 points.
Another thing to note is that in the asteroid field and as you're flying into the mothership, the purple part, those chains of enemies can get you a TON of points! Just destroy the red one first, the whole chain blows up and each one gives you like 10K points.

The continue system is entirely different. They start you back at the beginning of the level. However, there's a mission select, and a few cool bonus stages. Also, the PS MSX was missing a METRIC TON of graphics, and the XB MS3 is a perfect port. Better than perfect, there's no slowdown.
It doesn't track a lot of stats, though. Just overall high score and overall best time. ;_;, trying to beat Mission 1 of MS1 on Saturn in under a minute was a blast.

Yea some of the gems in the ice cave will give you 300,000 points.
but you didn't answer my question...

Oh, sorry. Yes, I can. In fact, the later you start, the harder it is. And Hard isn't overly hard, per se, the enemies just take more hits and fire a couple more bullets. I'm not gonna bother since it's basically going to be the same but just an extra couple points per enemy for shooting them more.
And 300K? I forgot that some went up that high.

Cool, when you get such a high score, where is it that you usually first die? I'd imagine you clear the first two levels and maybe the third before dying once.

Depends on the route I take, I've practiced some more than others. You can't really die, though. Occasionally I'll die against the level two boss, but I restart. Losing so many POWs is unacceptable, you can't really "afford" to die when you have more than two or three of em. That said, mission five has few POWs, and honestly, if I die once in the camel segment of mission four and lose five POWs, I don't worry.

For me, I just take certain short cuts, makes the game easier in some areas, and I've played it so many times that I can usually beat some of the bosses without dying...I doubt I would have done as good just renting it new, especially a non coin op version. The end boss is kind of funny because you have a tank and he's falling through the air and is grabbing your tank with his hand so you just blast him in the fucking face like 800 million times. Or you can stand on his BRAIN and knife him like there's no tomorrow. Hilarious boss.

yeah, this game is hella hard.im still on the last boss of the third level(the level where you get the scuba gearand start the level underwater).i get to the boss, and i avoid his lazer attacks, but eventually they get me,i usually stand on him and shoot away, then the lazer attack comes,i will then dodge it,but i never have enought lives to beat him.yet.at least the game lets you select the last level you are at,but to bad its at the begining of the level.great game.

The moment you see him turn his head to the side, jump away to the opposite side. The moment the laser attack stops, get back onto him, as if you're on the left, he likes to punch out the floor. For the missiles, you can destroy them as they come out if you have the HMG or Laser. If you don't, kill as many as you can as they come out, then get to the right side so you can have more room to dodge/destroy them. Remember, left side is bad because it gets punched out. If you find yourself caught there with the floor about to be smashed, though, you can jump on his hand.

It took me five days to beat the game. The last level was really not all that difficult, it is just really long. The trick for me was to memorize EVERYTHING so that I was able to react to anything a second or so before it happened. Come to think of it, the last level WAS pretty hard, since I got up to it on the first day, and it took me four more days to complete it.

Hehe. I've been playing about two hours a day for the last seventy days.
...which just goes to show you that I seriously need a life.
And whatdya mean by "nobody"? Were there any parts you felt you honestly couldn't get through without dying? I know I have to use a few tricks in parts like the camel section of level four and the ice cave in level two. Specifically, the "jumping off the animal a lot for a second of invincibility" trick.

I have to second that quote. Their is no way in hell that anyone could ever beat that game on one life.

And I'm again going to have to ask why? Once you learn the game, it's only "tough", as opposed to "b-hard". I thought even one-lifeing that PS2 Contra was harder. The only thing that really messed me up would be that if I lost my spaceship in mission five, I usually get nailed by an enemy in the purple part.
It probably helps that I've played the game too much for my own good, like an average hour a day since I bought it.
Still haven't beaten V. Hard, though. Those red eye-tank things in Mission 5 are evil.

I can't believe it! I just beat Metal Slug 3 on Xbox! I finally beat Level 4 and have been playing Level 5 like crazy for the past week. I actually managed to make it onboard the alien ship without loosing a single life and got to the final boss with 1 extra life left. Once I lost my last life, I pressed start on the 2nd controller for the continue and was able to finnish off the final boss with no extra lives remaining. My final score (for player 1) was 2,326,400.
I honestly thought MS3 couldn't be beat but I've proven myself wrong. This is definitely my greatest gaming accomplishment ever!
I got this game the day it came out, and I STILL CAN'T GET PAST THE LAST LEVEL (but I haven't tried playing it recently.)
I even resorted to "cheating"- I get as far as I can with player one in the last level, then, when I am about to lost my last life, I press start on player two. Then I can continue right where I left off as player two! I still can't beat it though- once I get out of that "vertical-space-shoot-'em-up mode," I'm toast!

You and your controller cheats. :P
You have problems with the on foot parts before the red tanks, Neb? For the first room, the key is to just learn how to jump between the hoops of the robots (and kill them as fast as possible). For the one who shoots three, the loopy ones may seem impossible to dodge, but the trick is to wait until they start moving horizontally, jump over the first and into the middle of the second, and then jump over the third. The aliens really don't pose a threat, just shoot them, or knife them if they jump at you. In the room where Morden's getting tortured, I always just get it so that just an eensy weensy bit of the aliens are on screen. You can kill them while being out of range. If they jump at you, then fourish knife hits will do them in.
The red tank section is just something you have to get a feel for, though. The knife works wonders on the little ones, though.
Good luck!
