View Full Version : Doom 3 Started at Midnight!

The release date was true! Some stores had special sales where they started selling the game at Midnight of Aug 3rd.

$55 is a lot to pay for a game, but experts expect it to sell a million copies in it's first week. That and Half Life 2 coming out later on this year should really be a nice shot in the arm for the lagging PC gaming industry.

Doom 3 is also still due for the XBox but no release date yet.

USA Today even had a article on it yesterday. The graphics look amazing, and they say the game has a really deep and detailed plot as well, a major change from eariler Doom games. I enjoy FPS games if they have a good plot, and if this is true this will sway me into buying it, although not at full price.

If anyone has bought the game, please post your thoughts on it here. :)

I doubt I will be buying this anytime soon. I'm interested in checking it out and I feel I owe the game a purchase because I played Doom on a LOT when I was a kid, but I'm not sure how it will run on my PC and I'm defenitely not going to upgrade the shit out of my computer just to play it, I'll rent the damn xbox version then when it comes out.

I preordered the US version, but I probably have to wait another 2 or 3 days until I get it, I can hardly wait anymore D: I already heard from someone who has the game already that it really fullfills the high expectations and kicks FarCry's ass anytime ;)

Here's btw a reason NOT to buy the Xbox version ;)

PC:

Xbox:

The quality difference is really quite noticable, so as long as you got the hardware for it, go for the PC version I'd say :)

I read a Time magazine article about it. They made fun of John Carmack's speech impediment, referred to "hard-core games" as a genre when I'm pretty sure they meant FPS's (whch are, ironically, about as mainstream as you can get), and, of course, mentioned Columbine.

*sigh*

robotriot: Ewww... now I know XboX games can look a hell of a lot better then that. What the fuck did they do to make it look that bad? X_x

Wow...the pc zombie could destroy that gimp xbox zombie in the blink of an eye.

Daria: I'm guessing there's several reasons for that ... for one, there's not only high poly models all around, but also all those lighting effects etc that take a lot of GPU power. The other thing is that iirc the Xbox uses its lousy 64MB RAM for CPU, graphics and audio - the PC version recommends a graphics card with 256MB RAM for the highest details (plus 1GB of normal RAM). The textures are of such a high resolution that they just don't fit in such a small amount of RAM I guess.

No shit. My money says they clean it the hell up before release. XBox is capable of far, far better. Chronicles of Riddick looks 10x better than that lousy screen grab ...

Doom 3? Yawn.

HL2? if it ever hits, will be the one I buy.

SF - Zombies from hell = tired.

I was looking forward to trying Doom3, but since i found out it wont run on win98 i couldnt care less

That xbox screen grab is rather unflattering. Heck ps2 could pull that off easy, especially given the low amount of "baddies" im assuming will be on the screen at once- probably no more than 4 on screen at once (2 high poly baddies vs 10 low/med poly baddies). *shrugs* i wont be playing Doom3 for a long time so its moot anyway

I don't think it was mentioned yet, but the full, cracked version was available online yesterday 1 day before the official release.

A game that may not be out until 2005 or beyond = even more tired.

So is anyone actually planning on buying the PC version and playing it?

I will have my copy by tomorrow, depending on when Best Buy has it available (I pre-ordered it there). I've heard they'll have it today, but when I look on their website it says tomorrow the 4th.

Just bought a 9800 pro yesterday for this very reason. On my Athlon 1800+ with 768 mb ram, it's almost playable at the absolute lowest settings. Spent all night trying to get my system back into shape (new bios, drivers, removing everything), but not much luck. Going to try a fresh XP install next, but if that doesn't do it, time to upgrade the mb and processor!

I'll reserve buying it until I play the demo. That way I can see how well it will run on my PC. If it looks and plays sweet even at 640x480 with the effects and textures on I'll probably get it.

I enjoyed Doom when it first came out, monopolizing my girlfriend's Prodigy account and then her 486 SX/33 to play it. Doom 2 was equally cool-not much of an update but still a good time.

@Spastic: with all the WWII/Vietnam/Military FPS's out there these days, it's refreshing to go back to flaming zombies.

really? what kinda ram do you have?

my setup is a athlon 2000+ with 9800pro and 1gb pc2700 kingston hyper x ram

i was hoping that'll run the game smoothly with middle of the road settings.

One stick is pc2700, the other two are pc2400. It's not a powerhouse by any means and I'm sure it needs some tweaks to even run xp correctly! It's playable and looks really good, but it gets choppy when there's a lot going on. Even with that, I spent a solid hour in the game. Very cool!

Once my copy has arrived I'll give it a test run, my friend told me it's a great game and actually very scary.

Grabbed it yesterday at gamestop at 7 pm. played til 1. Very cool shading effects especially if you have a newer nvidia card. Im running it in ultra mode at 1280X1024. My rig:

AMD 3200+ 64
1 GB Corsair XMS c2 pro
PNY 6800 GT 256
WD Raptor 10k rpm 74 gb
Audigy 2 zs platinum

Scared the shit out of me a few times already @_@

How's the plot and story of the game? The way they talked about it in the USA Today article it's susposed to be very good.

I think it would run fine on my system -- AMD Athlon 2600 with 1.5 RAM and a GeForce 3 TI 200 card. Not the best video card on the market anymore, but still useable for a while.

But...but...

Nobody told me about iD!

Seriously, I must've been out of it; I've read a number of gaming mags/rags while overseas and elsewhere and didn't know it was out.
