So I started playing this game last night . I have had it for about 3 days and was itching to play it . The game look beautiful IMO . The fighting system seems ok , but its been a while since I sat down and played a newer rpg . :o

I played for an hour before my hand started throbbing (broken hand....Small fracture from hockey).

So is anybody else playing this yet ? Is there any advice or tips you may have figured out ?

I looked for this last night at Fry's but I couldn't find it... Is it hard to find? When did it come out? Looks pretty cool, it's about time the GCN got a really good RPG!

It is becoming harder to find . I heard they were getting more copies in at gamestop . The one near me had a few copies left , but the manager said they were getting restocked.

Good RPG on GCN = Rare ?

PSO was great , but is that really considered an RPG ? (discuss amongst yourselfs) :P

Tales is all I've been playing since about a week ago. It took me a while to find it, because I was going to wait, but when I heard that it was such a great game, I HAD to buy it. NOBODY had any in stock, but after two days of seaching every corner of the internet and B&M stores, I found ONE copy at a Target.

So far, I like the game a lot. I'm not on the second disk yet (it has two disks!), but getting close. I really like the battle system personally, because I HATE turnbased RPG's. It reminds me of Street Fighter a bit--you have basic combos, and massive attacks all launched semi-fighter style. You get grades/points for style and speed which you can redeem for items later in the game.

The lack of random battles is nice too. You can avoid fights if you don't want to tediously level up, but enemies will run towards you if they see you.

Thus far, I think the story is kind of cheesy, but I guess there's only so many things you can do with the "save the world against all odds" plot-line. Since I'm not all THAT into RPG's, its not too bad of a story, but I think its pretty cliched.

I also find it kind of humorous when the characters "swear." I think there were only two Nintendo approved swear words in this game, because the characters say them a lot... "dammit" and "pissed." I think that was meant to make it more "edgy/extreme" but I think its kind of pointless and takes away from the rest of the game's feel.

Overall, its a good game. Well worth the $50 and if you can find it, I'd recommend you give it a play. There should be more copies coming out this week, but of course thats what stores were telling me LAST week, and I haven't seen another copy since. Still, I'm sure its just a temporary shortage.

Actually, they say "bastards" as well :) And I had no trouble finding one. Walked into Wal-mart and they had like 8 copies. I'm a few hours in, just past the 2nd town. Fun game so far, but the storyline is super-cliche, hits like ALL of the top ten on The Grand List Of Console Role Playing Game Clichés. Or at least, all that it can in two hours. It's actually almost predictable. Still, VERY VERY fun, I dig it.

I've played about 5 hours now, but I've been taking it relatively slow like I do all RPGs (love to explore every nook and cranny!). Without giving too much away, my characters just discussed boarding a boat for the first time...

I have to agree with everyone else that it's extremely cliched. The opening reminded me VERY MUCH of the Chrono Trigger intro, and I've already encountered several story elements ripped right out of other RPGs. I actually thought about keeping a list, but it became obvious quickly that it'd be a really long list. Despite that, it's still not too bad. :)

hmmm.....I started this exact same topic awhile ago....oh well, I'm still playing it I'm on disc 2 with around 46 hours so far. and I'm loving every minute of it. This is easily the best RPG I've played in years, even if the story is a bit cliched.

Did they change or improve the gamplay from the other tales games?

I stopped looking after 3 pages. My bad :embarrassed:

Even though the story is simular to a few other titles , the system for fighting is different. And the whole thing seems fresh to me.

Either that or I am just too damn happy about good rpg's beginning to appear on the GCN ! :D ( See my other thread )

I never ever like to pay full price for a game but some titles you just have to like DISGAEA and Tales of Symphonia appears to be one of them. www.gexpress.com has it for 44.00 so I bought it. Can't wait to play it.

I'm actually playing the original SNES Tales of Phantasia right now (with the translation patch and vocals patch). Does that count? ;) The hackneyed plot does little for me (developers ought to read through the cliche list (http://project-apollo.net/text/rpg.html) more often), but it's smashing otherwise.

I guess if I ever get a Gamecube, Symphonia will be one of the games I'll try to get.

After stopping at several stores last night I secured myself a guide :D

Does anybody know the name of the previous game on the PSX ?
( I think I may have seen it last night )

I'm enjoying this title quite a bit because I can play it with my wife. I don't know if the other Tales games were this way or not, but you can use controllers 2-4 to control other party members (when available) during combat making this game multiplayer friendly.

Best part is I got this game for 16 bucks by picking up a bunch of cheap cruddy games from CC and trading them into Hastings (3 for 1 deal).

I know you can in Tales of Destiny 2 but I've never played it.
