If Paris Hilton dropped the game off in a french maid outfit and hung out for the night "playing" the prototype, a grand may seem worth it otherwise hell no.
Cheers

I think that $1000 is a little steep, but I would get really close to that number, or maybe even spend that much if said item were one of the following:
1. Sonic Xtreme for Saturn (the unfinished, unreleased Sonic platformer for Saturn, the engine for which only showed up in the Japanese version fo Sonic Jam for Saturn)
2. Virtual Boy Mario Land
3. The rumored Magician Lord 2 for Neo Geo AES
Those a the few games that I might make me lose all rational thought and buy buy buy.

If it was a proto of SMW, Sonic 1, or Sonic X-Treme, and I had the money, you bet. Otherwise, fuck no.

if it was one of these proto 1000 usd would be enough to buy a screenshot
Just noticed this post - as it got bumped again.
Myself, I would never buy any proto for $1000. It just isn't worth it to me. Especially if I wasn't sure if it worked or not.
Even if I knew what it was and it was for my favorite systems, I still would at least hesitate. That's a lot of cash for one game...

I don't know that any of these exist (except for PC Cocoron) but we've all seen the Saturn Shenmue, and apparently VF3 and Sonic Fighters were running on a Saturn within AM2's dev house at one point, so there's at least hope.
i THINK i may have movies of that sonic the fighters game on an old saturn demo disc, but i need to check...

The question for the hypothetical situation is whether 1000 dollars is ALL you have! If I have far more than 1000 bucks and money isn't an issue, I will happily spend 1 grand on a gamble like this. But if 1000 dollars is all I have, I definitely won't. Seeing as money is usually an issue, I would leave the "hidden treasure" behind. ;)

I JUST (or will be by the end of August at the latest) paying $1,000 for an unreleased game. I don't know how playable it is, but I saw a scan of the actual CD. Not saying what game it is.
All I can say is w00t!!
BTW, I offered an unreleased version of StarCon (sequel to Star Control series) for the PS1. I was hoping for $1,000 but got 1/3 of it.

Ok now that we have things all figured out those who said yes..........
Send your thousand dollars to me.
You might get an unreleased game of your favorite system or you might get a Mario Dunk Hunt cart or even an Atari 2600 Combat cart. I can't make any promises. Opening your package will be like Christmas as you won't know what to expect !!
Who is first to start in the fun?
I would start but I need to be guaranteed that it's for PS1, it's unreleased, and I guess I need to know the game.

$1,000 for an unreleased ps1 title?
Thats a little much, no? Thats the most I have ever heard of for a PS1 game.
I have close to 30 unreleased PS1 games. Time to buy a new house.

eh. It could be something crazy, like that Resident Evil game or whatever.
Does anyone have Aeon Flux, out of curiosity?

Saw this thread while nosing around and couldn't resist offering some advice. And this is coming from someone who has _sold_ a couple of NES carts for well over $1000.00 each. DreamTR knows which ones I'm talking about and no... he wasn't the buyer, but I think he (and a few others here) know me as a reliable source "LOL".
Get some screen shot sequences that have never been seen @_@ before. You don't want the seller doctoring up screen shots in photoshop. If you're spending a grand, you have the right to ask for screen shots... or better yet... maybe live video clips .
Deal with a reliable @_@ source and I know that's tough to qualify. Maybe you (or someone else) bought a lesser proto from the same seller and you can get some recomendations. Ask around at forums like this one.
Get some 3D pictures of the cart, inside and out so you can at least visually confirm that the proto exists.
Obviously, if you live nearby... get together with the seller and demo the game.
As someone who has developed/produced/marketed video games, I can tell you that it makes no difference if the cart has been machined open to accomodate removeable EEPROMs or its a pre-production EEPROM soldered in place in a closed housing. Either one could be the near-final code, but the likelyhood of the open housing being just a skoosh less is higher. Developers will sometimes have near final code in these with a dozen backdoors to tweak code.
So yes... there are serious collectors out there who will pay a grand (or more) for the truly rare game, and there are plenty who will pay hundreds for a prototype of a released game just to be able to have the egg and the chicken too! Keep in mind that major developers are no longer making any NES or 2600 games or prototypes, so this is a supply and demand issue with the number of prototypes decreasing (lost, broken, whatever) rather than increasing.
Spend your money wisely!!!

With those conditons, no. I am 15 years old, and a scam would drain me of ALL of my money. Even if it WAS real, I don't have the resources. Too bad for me!

I was trying to figure out which one I paid that much for. I actually paid $725ish for it since the seller needed the money at the end of October (I think) and that's all I could afford at the time. It was a sports game. (Buyatari owns it already)

Speaking of Sonic X-Treme, it ended up going for $2500. And there was a group bid that got up within $150 of beating that bid.

I've offered well over 1G for games before, and I'd pay unlimited amounts if I wanted the game bad enough.

if I had the cash to do so, I would definitely do so. Maybe it's just that part of me that still new to the whole "prototype" aspect of game collecting, but I think it would be awesome to be the only owner of a certain game in the world.

Hardware yes, software no.
There is truely no such thing as "one-of-a-kind" when it comes to software in this industry.

I guess for me it really depends on what game it is. It for sure would have to be an unreleased game.

I wouldn't do it sight unseen. I would be willing to drop 1k, but I'd have to know what I am buying. Other than that let someone else drop 1k on something unkown
