So I've finally got my hands on this game, and it's absolutely blown me away.

I've played plenty of games that have thick atmosphere, but this game craps all over all of them within the first 10 minutes of the game. Resident evil has nothing on the intensity of this game. Remember that part when the dogs break through the window in one of the first hallways in the first RE? Thats what this entire game is like, except you never have any idea where it's coming from.

The graphics, suffice to say, are the best seen in a game to date. The lighting effects are absolutely astonishing. When you enter a room and all the lights shut off and all you have is the glow of the ammo readout on your gun for light, your heart skips a beat when you hear any sound.

Speaking of sound, it's absolutely spine chilling. Right when hell breaks out in Mars City, it's constant chaos. Easily one of the most intense and horrific moments in a videogame. You hear people yelling and screaming over your com, sounds of flesh rending and bone snapping in chilling detail. All the while the entire base is shaking, you hear pounding on all the walls to keep you constantly paranoid, and then an Imp blasts a fireball past you with an absolutely sick sound effect.

I've only played the game for 2 hours or so now, but it's definitely not takable in large doses. Intense doesn't even begin to describe the experience. If you've got a computer capable of running this game, you owe it to yourself to pick it up, download it, or at least try the demo when it comes out. Unbelievable.

I just picked up Doom 3 as well, and I totally agree with you. The game so damned intense. I play for a decent amount of time, then I stop to play again later. Woo, intense indeed.

When all hell broke loose, that constant radio chatter was absolutely awesome. You just kept hearing people screaming and yelling out orders. Good stuff.

Yeah, this game is recommended, and if you played the originals, and liked them, you'll absolutely love this one.

Has anyone played it yet on an older card, for example Ti4200 128mb. I don't want to buy it if I need to buy a better card to fully appreciate it. :D

Yeah, what kind of machine are you running the game on? I'd actually spring for this one but I'm not going to waste my time if it runs like a slideshow on my PC.

I'm running a xp2000+, 1gb pc2700 ram, 9800pro.

I've heard that lesser stuff will work fine playing the game on lower graphics settings. The game is still gorgeous in lower settings.

Pretty much what I've been hearing. Good play experience, not hugely long (15-20 hours apparently) but can chug a bit even on high spec machines if the graphics quality is set high and more than a couple of enemies are on screen.

Game of the year? I'll wait and see if MP2 turns up first before making judgment :P

I will be attempting to play it tonight on an Athlon XP 2400+, 512MB pc2700, and a Geforce 4 Ti4200 64mb. I have plans for upgrading but can't afford it at the moment. I'll let everyone know how it goes....

I'm running it on this bad boy:

Thats the beauty of the game. It's SO well coded by the people at id, and it was originally in development for the GeForce3, so yes, your GeForce 4 Ti's can handle the load.

Check out [H]ardOCP's Doom 3 hardware guide. It's pretty helpful to have some kind of expectation of what your rig can run the game at.

And if you still aren't happy with performance, you can try this tweak if you've got some extra HD space.

I hate you all. :P

I have an Athlon 1600 CPU with 1 gig RAM and an Nvidia GF4 MX440, I figure that's a true low-end. Just tried the game a bit.

640x480 resolution with shadows and light sourcing turned off still chugs a bit, I'll tweak on it some more later.

I have a low end PC.
AMD XP 1700+
Geforce 4 Ti 4200
512 meg DDR Ram

Runs pretty much fine. I don't find the game too scary, but it's pretty damn fun. Not the greatest thing ever, but a fun and refreshing fps.

San Andreas being game of the year??

It'll definitely have to make a larger jump then Rockstar did for III to VC

is half life 2 even gonna be out this year?

GTA won't have shit on this unless they put it online in the form of massive deathmatch.

GTA: SA GOTY? Heh, are you joking me? Not to sound cynical or anything but VC is one of the most overrated games ever. It's a good game, no doubt, but people act like it's the best game ever. Anyways, from what we've seen of SA, it looks to be almost the same as the jump from 3 to VC, and that doesn't mean 'GOTY". But, with magazines catering to mainstream more often than not now, who knows.

HL2 will be great, it has to be..it has to.

There was a good article from the AP in our paper today about Doom 3 -- I suspect it was published in many other places since it was a AP article.

But there was also a insert with a review of the game by Stephen Kent, author of Ultimate History of Video Games and long time respected game journalist. He gave the game very high marks, a A grade.

System Shock 2 and Resident Evil scared the hell out of me. I'm afraid of what this one would do. :eek 2:

Heh, System Shock has some pretty good scares, same with the original RE. I mean, I was younger back then as well, but anyways, Doom 3 does have some 'jump' moments. I love it.

But, I'm not that far either, I haven't really gotten to the 'hell' levels. Those look so awesome.

I'd like to give Doom 3 a shot, but I doubt my computer can handle it. My computer's crapping itself trying to install Final fantasy XI. I've been installing it since 10 pm today....It's still going. I beat River ciity ransom twice while waiting for it!

Check out that HardOCP link I posted and see how well your rig can handle it.

And oh man, I'm getting to the point where there's always more than one enemy in the room when I get into a battle and it's just chaos. Never have I been playing a game where I walked into a room, and a corpse tied to the ceiling with his entire torso cut open starts screaming, calling giant two headed maggot crawlers. Amazing.

Damn this game its been crashing so much on my laptop. AMD 64 3000+ 512 ddr ram ati radion 9600.........................WTF!!!! I want to enjoy it but shit the game crashes every 2 minutes, not exagerating here!

Phew, just beat it now. That was a pretty damn good game. I gotta hand it to ID, I think they pulled it off just great. It didn't impress me much until I reached around the hell level. Shit just comes everywhere and it's absolute madness, and the level design of hell was just amazing. The last level was pretty intense as well and it was damn cool to see the return of the cyberdemon =D

Highly recommended if you got the pc to run it. I played through it on a amd xp 1700+, geforce 4 ti4200 with 512mb DDR ram and it ran pretty well, with very little slowdown.

Holy shit this game is intense!! Here's a screenshot I took last night. I ran the game on medium settings, and I only noticed a little choppiness when there were several enemies around. I have a GF4 Ti4200 so I was pretty impressed considering. :)
