View Full Version : Does ANYONE praise Bira-Bira anymore?

Y'know, folks in the classic gaming circles used to raise their voices in song to this Tiki god of classic gaming finds regularly. The Church of Bira Bira was in full swing less than a decade ago. And all was good.

But today, finds are scarce. And those legendary scores are no more. Could this be due to a declining faith in Bira-Bira? When was the last time you posted anything in praise of Bira Bira? Thanked him for a good score? Sacrificed a Combat cart?

Whatever happened to the faith?

(And if you have to ask what this post is about, find an elder who will enlighten you. Or click here (http://birabira.chaosmagic.com/).)

Several years ago, I used to say a quick prayer to the thrift god Bira Bira, every time before I went into a thrift store (seriously) but not anymore . He hasn't provided for me as much as a god should, so I left the church around 2000 or 2001. He helped me get a few good finds though, most memorably a loose but mint Glib for $0.49. I'm still convinced that I would never have found it if I haven't prayed to Bira Bira.

Absolutely. Everytime I go into a thrift, I peruse the the sections most likely to contain a Bira Bira statue. I have said many a prayer to Bira Bira, both in hopes of finding carts, and finding an idol of my own. Once I even had a reef dream, I swear! I was talking to my girlfriend on the phone, laying in bed. After sometime I drifted off. I found myself on a sunny beach, with rows upon rows of shelves containing countless games stretching out into the ocean. I just stared as a feeling of joy and home flooded over me. Finally I was jolted back awake by my girlfriends voice. After that dream is when I really started to make some decent, and plentiful, finds. Praise be to Bira Bira.

Does finding GBA Mario vs. Donkey Kong at the local Wal-Mart qualify for a Bira Bira shout out? :P

Actually I used to when I went into a thrift store. That was for about 6 months when I found out about him. Then after finding nothign good I stopped. I always thought it was silly, but I would go along with it cause it is a classic gaming legend.

"20 Tiki Army" (sung to the tune of White Stripes's "Seven Nation Army")

I'm gonna buy 'em up

A twenty one tiki army at my back

They're gonna help me out

Using their magic to get a rare stack

And I'm thinkin' to myself at night

Because I can't forget

Back and forth through my finds

Just wanna snag-it

And the message comin' from my eyes says collect it all...

Speaking of Bira Bira... Is Chris "Crackers" Cracknell still around?

Speaking of Bira Bira... Is Chris "Crackers" Cracknell still around? Not sure. Last I saw of him on RGVC was during the initial AA/Hozer tussle. He posted a rather long rant on "what's wrong with the hobby," and he all but disappeared. That was in 2002. He's posted like three more times since then, but that's about it.

I am still one of the most fervent followers of the Great Bira Bira. I own a T-shirt in my size that has Tikis not unlike the great Bira, and I always wear in the Great Hunt. Things found while waring this include my Nomad, Top-Loader, Video Pinball, Boing!, SW'ed N64 Worms Armageddon, and some other stuff. I've always wanted to be the host of the original statue (last I heard collector Jay Tilton had the thing; Jay, you on here?) and I've even gotten a hold of the original Mr. Freindly Pen that started the whole Mr. Freindly -vs- Bira Bira bit and ran it over with my truck! (no, really) That's why Mr. Freindly's been so quiet...

Anyway, I may the sole holder of the Bira Bira faith, but I'm probably the only one who gets Reef Store Nightmares on a regular basis; far more often than dreams.

What are Reef Store dreams? Another post, another time, possibly by another person.
