A couple years ago I got a boxed TRS-80. Finally got around to opening it, and inside was this strange device:

Anyone know what it is?

It looks like a floppy disk controller (it has a rectangular port opposite of the pins, right?)

I think it's the RS-232 interface that was sold with a label normally, which could have jumped ship when it realized it was representing a totally useless piece of hardware, hoping to find a delicious package of bread to label instead.

Yup, that's what it is. Thanks, guys. Now I need to get a disk drive so I can play all those crap games that I don't have either. :P

While you're looking for the earliest of the early games, keep an eye out for this one:

Don't bother with a disk drive. All the best games are on cartrid... Wait a second, there are no best games for Coco. Just alot of them.

No coco bashing please. I loved that machine and there ARE a lot of great games on both cart and disk for that system:

Woah, woah, WOAH there, scooter. I can practically say the same thing about Commodore. ;)

I do agree that the cartridge games aren't that great. A few decent ones but the rest were brutally average or they sucked: no real "in between".

Tape/Disk/Homebrew games...that's where the meat of CoCo gaming was at. For me it was homebrew for many years as my family couldn't afford games for the computer so I got my fill of Rainbow Roach, GeoJogger, Escape from Lurkley Manor, Deed of the York...lots of good stuff.

@Atarileaf: cool CoCo site. There aren't that many around that are active these days.

I am not going to bash on the system.......but seriously compared to the other computers and game consoles out there........it really does not compare. I owned one and 30+ carts recently and could not justify having it in my collection. For me, it was just awful to play. Most of the games(espically the ones you are actually going to find in the wild and are cart form) are just dreadful to control. I could care less about graphics and sound, but dam, if you dont have gameplay, count me out. Everyone has an opinion, and it is obvious that some people on this post are CoCo fanboys. It is cool for this forum to have different opinions, for it can shed different perspectives on things. Want my perspective? The CoCo sucks

I actually like the system and buy carts for it when I find them (I have 6 so far). However, part of why I like it is that it's so maligned among classic gamers. There are certainly far worse systems.

I enjoy bashing in general, and not that I feel obligated to apologize, but I know nothing of the non-cartridge stuff. As a Channel F fan, I know the glory of maligned games and systems.

I'm just messing around here- half-educated and half-witted.

Since we are all so nice to each other in the fourms, we should start a thread to see who can be the biggest prick. A thread to get all the flaming out of the way, a no holds barred Ass Hat Compitition!

It was called the battlezone, and it worked out pretty well until people decided that NOT anything goes, and it got shut down.
