Odd question for Dreamcast owners...

Short Version: I do repairs for local game stores. One gave me four DC's. I don't own a DC, but the remaining 3 of these will be mine. I need to try to return one working one.

I've gotten one of them to where it "seems" to be working perfectly. Sonce I don't own one, I have no reference.

Are they supposed to be a bit noisy? I hear the fan, but I'm sure that's normal. When it loads game data (level changes) you can hear it spin up quite clearly. It's not grinding, and it's about as loud as my PSX. Is that normal? I'd hate to return it as repaired and be told that it's "still making that noise" or something. It is not scratching the disc.

(i was just given a stack of four. no specific complaints on any, but some of them have obvious issues)

You can hear the lens jumping back and forth quite loudly and that's normal.

At least it is on mine--not sure if this was fixed in later versions, I've got a release date one.

I've got a newer model, but still old enough to play cd-r's, and it makes the same noises. Loudest system I've ever owned. It's been doing that since the day I got it.

I bought mine several months b4 it came to the US.....import of course...never had a problem with it...it is NEVER loud....my PS2 is the noisiest thing I have.

Quick note: Yes the console is loud so that might not be the issue.

My DC recently started resetting in the middle of the game I'm playing... Im hoping it's just the disc. Its not in terrible shape but its not mint either. I haven't played any other games recently to find out if it's just the disk. It occurs after about 30 or 40 minutes of gameplay and is annoying. Anyone else have this problem?? In any case I thought I'd bring up the fact that it might not be an issue that can be discovered in 15 or 20 minutes.

my dc has been pretty quiet except for when i burned a porn movie to watch on the dc using gyplay. something must have been bogus about the mpeg, because it made the loudest sound ive ever heard a console make.

Thanks all for the replies! I think this one is normal. I let NHL hockey 2000 run in demo for a contiguous hour, no problems. I wouldn't call it "loud" , but it is nowhere near silent either.

As mentioned before, yes it is the laser seeking that is the most noticeable noise, during loads.

I have 2 DC's atm.. one is a former Blockbuster renter and it is noisy.. The other is quite.
