WOULD YOU EVER RAT?

A friend of mine is a gearhead/hacker. He participates on a couple different message boards for cars. Anyway, one of the people on the car message board had a car that he(the poster not my friend) fucked up. THe poster (i dont know his name) explained that he wasnt under warranty because he had after market parts on his car. He explained a scheme on the messageboard on how he was going to take the parts off and get his car fixed for free. Somebody on the board alerted dealerships around the schemers area and they actually caught him.

My question is: what would it take for you to rat out somebody on this board if they were doing something wrong? As far as videogame stuff goes. Would you do it at all? Just wondering. For the record, im not doing anything wrong! ha ha ha

To me, message boards are like Vegas: Whatever happens in them, stays in them. So no, I would not, even if I were offered some money. Note that "some" doesn't really equal "one billion," but that's not likely. :P

Doubt it. We've had a few people come up with ideas to get items from store shere before (the Circuit City pricematching for one in recent memory) so long as no one gets physically hurt I wouldn't. Hey if you can find a loophole, more power to you!

yea, i feel the same way....unless something bad is gonna happen to me or someone i knew, i couldnt care less what anyone does in the real world.

That ratting business was probably the result of some personal vendettas.. people can get funny (as in vindictive or petty) over message boards, particularly in automotive themed ones.

I don't pay nearly as much attention in other forums as I do with this one but I have seen it happen in a few communities dedicated to specific car brands. A few threads with some differences of opinion, some name calling, a subtly veiled threat or two, bam, you have an arch-nemesis. It's the online equivalent to keying some other guy's car.

Another possibility is that it wasn't personal at all. There have been cases of regional reps for automotive dealerships found scouring web forums known to harbor the modding mindset, and they'll do anything they can to finger out someone invalidating their warranty so they don't become their 'problem' anymore.

I'd rat on people that sell "teh ROMZ". No question. I'd also rat on scammers. But if someone is doing something like that.....defrauding a business and it doesn't directly affect the message board community....no, I wouldn't bother.

However, I would EAT rat. I've eaten rattlesnake (very very good) and lots of other stuff, so why not? Just not rat sushi....

I generally don't bother to rat people out unless I know someone is being scammed or of the like. If someone is selling a rom CD or sometihng for like a dollar or 2 I really don't care as there really not making much off of it. It when someone sells like 500 roms for $70.00 on 1 Cd I could see some people having a problem with.

My first though was, "wow, people sure get worked up over some silly things."

Then I remembered some of the heated, pages-long arguments I've had with people on other forums about video games.
