how does one go about getting a patent for a video game idea? and also selling one?

Patent? If you have to ask that question, the answer is, quite simply, you don't. I don't think you know what you're looking for, exactly.
Generally speaking game companies don't want ideas from random people and are quite happy with ideas from their own creative people.
You can get design patents for things such as the shape or look of an item - say the honeycomb mold of some plastic honey containers - or you can get a patent for a process, and goodness knows patents have been issued for stuff they shouldn't have been, like software patents.
That said, I think the answer's going to be no, you don't get a patent, unless you care to explain what your idea is.

From what I've heard, pretty much the only way to get your idea into a game is to get a group together and make it yourself.

Other way would be to be really good friends with somebody very high up in a company... not just a lowly programmer hehe
