View Full Version : Saddest Moments in Video Games
What do you feel are the most emotional moments in video games. Ranging from 2600 to Current Gen. By saddest moments I mean the death of a loved character, sudden change in the story or just the ending of a great game...
For me, ofcourse, Tom The Hot Dog guy from Shenmue. That man was the sunshine of the docks and his music that played in Yokosuka cheered everyone up. When he left to America it was sad because you are where his stand is normally and instead of seeing it the camera pans towards his plane taking off in the air....I want him back, now.

Shit, sorry, this contains a spoiler for Beyond Good and Evil. Black text away!
The only time I ever really felt.... bad in a videogame was during Beyond Good and Evil, when Jade found out that the lighthouse was destroyed, and her dog was the only thing really left.
Also when pac-man dies...the treaturous cries of pain whowhowhowho bo bo LOL

I don't know why, but seeing Pac-Man's death cry in print is completely cracking me up. LOL LOL
The ending of Snake's Revenge on the NES was a bit sad. Some of your fellow soldiers don't make it. Would've been sadder if you'd really interacted with them during the game, but still fairly heavy stuff for the 8-bit era.
Oh, also the time I played my first Mythicon game. That was a sad day.

I'm not angry, just flustered that I stumbled across this spoiler right in the middle of the same game I'm playing now. What're the odds, eh? x_x

Well, at least you've still got a good portion of one of the best games of '03 (or any year) left to play.
So it's not all bad.

What do you think are the sadest moments in video games ranging from atari to xbox.(
Atari - Pac-Man's slow, painful death.
Box - watching fake polygonal women run around in bikinis and pondering how pathetic your life is

Nei's death in Phantasy Star 2
That's my vote, too. I just got through playing this on GBA. The funny thing is that I was laughing at how the game sets up Rolf's relationship with Nei; I can't tell whether it's a like a normal brother/sister relationship or some sort of quasi-bestiality. Either way Nei's death actually bummed me more than I thought it would.

I didn't find Aeris' death sad at all. The girl had no personality.
There are spoilers from old FF games in this post.
As far as Final Fantasy games go: Palom and Porom's death in FF4 was sad, I thought. Setzer's backstory (with his dead lover) in FF6 and/or the Locke and Rachel story from the same game. Laguna looking over Raine's grave in the ending of FF8.

When Spirit dives her fighter into the space station on a kamikazi run in Wing Commander II. She's one of only four characters to survive from the first game, so losing her halfway through the second was a huge shocker.

Black text = MGS2 spoilers. <font color="black">
For me, Solidus' death in Metal Gear Solid 2. Just as you begin to realize that all along, Solidus was hardly the villain, but more the good guy, Raiden chops him in half and effectively, the Patriots have won, since they were still "controlling" Raiden. Then when he does that death pose and stuff, you really feel bad for the guy.

Good, I wasn't the only one that was moved by Palom and Porom's sacrifice... sorry... :(
OK... OK I'm better... yeah.
Another sad moment to me was in Lunar 2 when the story goes over Jean's backstory with that one old dude. The horror of her childhood, and the fact that she was a character you could actually care something about... sad indeed.

Another sad moment. When Earthbound 64 was a no-show. Nintendo has a great series on their hands, and they won't keep going with it. Plus, the Japanese get the GBA versions. I can't read Japanese or else I'd have imported it by now.

Oh, I dunno. Kameo looks pretty nice.. note I said LOOKS. Ghoulies looked nice too, but well.. Let's hope Kameo doesn't suck. I'd prefer Rare had stayed with who they knew best and kept releasing Banjo and Perfect Dark sequels. Maybe a rerelease of the REAL GoldenEye 007.
and most of all...thinking of all the video game companies that will loose their ass this ChristmasAnd even sadder I'll be buying all the games at full price rather than when they drop to $20-30 a few months later.

The sadest moment was when i was forced to play halo with my cousin becuase he badgered me all day so finally iIcaved in.
The thing that ticked me off alot is he left it on the front screen with that annoying monk chant crap for about 10 minutes now that drove me mad.
I don't take video games so seriously I actually laughed when Aeris or aerith to all you nerds out there died she sucked as a character in battle. My friend used her alot and when she died in the game he got pissed cause he wasted time leveling up with her.

I dont know how you can be sad during an Atari game.
I think the first ...and only... story that made me sad was the ending of Final Fantasy IX.
Klonoa: Door to Phantomile
I did not expect the game to end like that.

Final Fantasy 3/6 Spoiler Alert:
At the very end of the game, after you have defeated Kefka and during the final escape, when Shadow decides to stay behind... The music at that point combined with Shadow's sad story made it the most touching moment of an already beautiful game...

Probably Sonic Adventure 2's Shadow dieing... until I found out in Sonic Heroes that it was all a sham.

KJN beat me to it...but...
Klonoa: Door to Phantomile has the saddest ending. EVAR. I guess everyone can relate to it in some way, and it is so unexpected. But then again, props for doing something different.
And the saddest non-in-game event: the day the Dreamcast died. (I also was sad when Dave Halverson "left" GameFan)

Another vote for Emma's death in MGS2. Just something about her parrot...god damn.
Alys' death in Phantasy Star IV was pretty tough at the time, the song that plays (I think it's called "Her Last Breath") is just so sad it's crazy. Honorable mentions go to thinking Glottis is dead in Grim Fandango, and the end of Ico...just because it was over.

I agree with Alys' death in PS4 being very sad. I think the whole game gets away with more emotional tugging than it should because it brings in feelings from all of the earlier ones. Another heroine dead, the name they game Alys, another Wren, Lutz/Noah, etc.

The one ending of Disgaea i thought was a lil sad
I thought it was kinda sad when you beat Mantis in Metal Gear Solid, the first time he helps somebody with his power and it makes him fell actually good from doing so...then he dies knowing that he could have prevented pain instead of causing it.

Without a doubt, right up there with Nei's death (which, heh heh, you can actually avoid, but hell if I knew that when first playing through the game). Dang, what's with all the PS series girls getting killed off? At least Rika was fine... O:
