View Full Version : Sega's Fascination
I just realized this but Sega has a fascination with planets, Saturn, Neptune, Jupiter, Genesis( Moon I think). So I guess they wasnt clever enough to come up with some different names for those systems. non-planets, Game Gear, Dreamcast, Master System, Nomad, CDX :?

lol genesis is NOT the moon i think its the first book of the bible
But.... they called in that in the US because there were cooyright issues over the name "megadrive" so theychanged the name
and i didnt know that there was more than one console named by a planet???
Next time do ure research :)

Not quite. There is a theme, but its only used as a code-name (exception saturn). My guess is segas r&d division had a thing for astrology, or just thought it was cool (which it is!).
Intel and AMD have recurring themes as well (AMD: horses and intel: rivers (?) and theres probably a stack more i dont know.
Oh, and you forgot mars ;)

Other than getting the meaning of Genesis wrong I believe SMB's research is correct. There were quite a few systems code named after planets. Maybe next time you should worry more about URE spelling and less about someone else's research.

They actually went through almost the full solar system:
Mercury - codename for a 64-bit machine (canned)
Venus - codename for the Nomad
Mars - codename for the 32X
Jupiter - codename for the early cart-based Saturn (canned)
(Titan) - Saturn-based arcade board, named after Saturn's largest moon
Uranus -
Neptune - codename for the canned Megadrive/32X 2-in-1
Pluto - another canned 64-bit machine
(some info pinched from a recent thread at Assembler (http://www.assemblergames.com/phpbb2/index.php))

AAARRRRGH. Astronomy, not Astrology. Please, these are two very different things. Do not mix them up.

I'm surprised URANUS wasn't the code name for the Dreamcast, instead of Katana. LOL

URANUS would be Sega's codename for all the loyal customers they have screwed in the past.

I hate when people purposly spell things wrong and don't use punctuation. It makes your posts too damn hard to understand.
What the hell is the Sega Neptune? Never heard of it? Anyone want to explain? :)

It was going to be a genesis with a 32x all in one unit. Sega as you can already tell never went threw with it though.

Atari had a cat fascination for a while...Lynx, Jaguar....I think there were a couple others that were either codenames or dead projects.
They also did a woman's name thing back in the day, Stella (atari 2600 chip), Maria (7800 chip), etc (I forget the others).
Apple did the cat thing too with their OS X: jaguar, panther, and .,..ummm, I forget what the next one is suppose to be...

"Unfortunately, Sega of America would not be permitted to use the name in its respective market. Another American firm had already registered the term megadrive as a trademark, so Sega's new console was to be renamed Genesis for its U.S. launch. It was a fortuitous choice in retrospect. The name's Biblical connotations would not be lost on conservative-minded American parents, many of whose kids would want to buy the new system. There was also a hidden meaning within the console's new name. Genesis in Hebrew means "in the beginning," and that is exactly what Sega was doing - beginning the nextgen wave of consoles with a Sega system. Up to this point Sega had been playing catch-up to Nintendo. Now it would be leading the way."

I've heard that the game gear has a chip market "mercury" in it somewhere. Dunno for sure though.

There was an American computer company during 1989 called "Mega Drive"...when I did research to see who this company was, it turned out, they orginated from the UK! :o Why would they be upset over something that's happening in the US?
