View Full Version : Madden NFL 2005? Pfft. (First Impressions)

Two things to preface my ‘rant’ of sorts:

1. I do not consider myself to be particularly good at football games, but I don’t consider myself to be bad either. My skill is merely average.

2. I have not been a ‘fan’ of Madden. I’m personally a bit more interested in NCAA, but I will say that I played last year’s Madden more than any other NFL game before it.

In my first game of Madden 2005 last night, I played online against a friend of mine. We’re both on the same skill level, with me usually coming out ahead. I chose the Bengals and he chose the Saints. I got the opening kickoff and started my drive. First play, I call a pass up the right side. Interception. I shrugged it off, figuring I just made a bad throw. My friend had the ball, and I sacked his QB on the first 2 downs, and stuffed his runner on the third. So he punts and I get the ball back. I throw an incompleteion, lose yards on a run, and then throw ANOTHER interception. By now I’m getting frustrated. My friend isn’t controlling the players picking off my passes, either. The pointless back and forth continues throughout the first quarter. The second quarter goes by with the same results. I get intercepted a lot, he gets sacked a lot. He did manage to get off a few decent pass plays, and the score at the half was 27-0. We checked the total yards for each team, and I was shocked to see that I had 1 YARD of offense. He had barely broken 100. Many of his points were the result of intercepting me and taking the ball back close to my end zone--leaving an easy run or short pass to get the score.

Second half began, and neither of us could do much. I had a bit of luck with three complete passes and a couple of good runs, but never scored. I was, however, intercepted multiple times. My friend’s QB was eating the grass more times than I care to mention, as well. I believe the final score ended up 34-0.

I can’t count the number of sacks I had, but it had to be in double digits. The final number of interceptions? He had 8, I had 3. That’s not right. Eleven interceptions in one game? If that doesn’t show how unbalanced the game is, I don’t know what does. Only one of those picks was user controlled. And it was one of mine.

We used headset communication when we played, and we spent most of the time discussing how ESPN is a much better game this year. Kinda funny, we thought.

Definitely not a good first impression with me. I’ll get some more time in on it tonight and see if my opinion changes. Doubtful, but we'll see.

A few quick things:

The ‘hit stick’ seemed like a waste.

The online play was silky smooth and the voice communication was outstanding. I could hear the crickets at my friend’s house when it got quiet. Clear as crystal.

The soundtrack is great. It’s a good mixture of both rap and rock.

The Collector’s Edition bonus stuff is garbage. The 'classic versions' of Madden are crap, with 2 PSX versions and one older Genesis-era one (the year's aren't specified), and the interviews and other content zre lacking. Actually, one of them was on G4 a while back showcasing the history of Madden. The packaging is nice, but I wouldn’t suggest buying the CE for anything other than collector value, which is questionable anyway. It is a sports game, after all.

yeah, the new madden selling point is they increased the computers defense, apparently from what you're saying, they increased it a lot :D

Have you tried adjusting any difficulty levels? That might help as I read Madden '05 plays differently than past titles. I haven't played it but will probably get a chance on Wednesday. I'll pass on any impressions I get then.

I played it on whatever standard difficuly is online. All-Pro, perhaps?

I didn't really check out any options yet, just kinda jumped in and played. Apparently there is some sort of 'friendly play' option that keeps you from running fake punts/field goals. On 4th and 3 the game made me punt, when I wanted to run for the first down.

Most likely an option that can be turned off, but annoying if you're not expecting it.

Madden > ESPN

Just like every other year.

I have heard there's some really stupid glitches in ESPN, like if you get a clipping penalty on a 20 yard run, it becomes a 35 yard penalty from the line of scrimmage.

Fits right in line with other ESPN games. (stupid glitches)

And it's why I won't buy it, even at 20 bucks.

I haven't enjoyed a Madden game since '97 on my Saturn. After that it just all blurred into the same thing until Sega raised the bar with NFL 2K. As for any glitches that ESPN has they can be fixed, as long as you have LIVE, unlike Madden which you are stuck with. That is just my opinion, not looking for another Madden > ESPN, ESPN > Madden debate. "Play what you like", should be everyone's motto. :D

Madden is on live this year.

ESPN is FAR from a horrible game, I just prefer Madden. I just don't understand how certain things make it into the ESPN games.

Spoken like a man who has yet to play either '05 football game, but has already made his judgement call about which is better based on exactly 0 concrete first-hand information.

Butta is right. The "-35 yard penalty" glitch is ridiculous - it's happened to me *twice* on big runs. Luckily, the run game is very, very easy in ESPN - I can pick up 100/game even on Legend, so you can get the yards back. I've had the opposing QB "freeze" on two occasions, leading to an easy sack.

As for Madden, I haven't played 05, but the pass defense the last couple years has been quite weak, so I'm glad they've bumped it up. You shouldn't be able to get away with stupid passes or the "Hail Mary" 50/50s that Madden used to let bad players get away with. If you're not throwing the ball away (I think it's Triangle in this year's Madden), then you're not playing Quarterback correctly. If you don't mix up the run/pass and use play action, you're going to be intercepted. Even in ESPN 2k5, it's not uncommon to throw 4 or 5 picks if I play sloppy.

As for the sack numbers, I can't imagine you're sacking him that much unless you're running a huge number of blitzes, in which case your friend should've been throwing Patriot-style dump passes or putting the recievers in motion to the side you blitz from to help block/get easy receptions.

ESPN is a good football game, great presentation, but even Madden 2004 is a better all around game. I'll try Madden 05 soon and post some comments once I get a season in the books.

Yea I really dont like Madden at all. ESPN is such a better buy because the price is considerably lower, and its an all around better game.

Madden is FAR superior in the gameplay aspects, but ESPN has all the right whistles and bells with the Sportscenter tie-ins and the half-time and post game "shows."

The Madden has MUCH better controls and playcalling, makes ESPN look silly. The Madden is more true to actual football simulation and features a LOAD of control. I'd recommend Madden for the die-hard football fan, and ESPN for the casual gamer who dabbles in sports game, and won't mind some questionable game play.

Sounds to me, Oobgarm, like you just need to keep playing. The D is tough this year, but if you call the right plays and manage your offense, its not unbeatable. You'll just have to ramp up your abilities. :)

We were putting out and selling the game today (Tuesday) at Circuit City. We got a message in the store's email system to sell as soon as it arrived.

I've been playing Madden 05 at my friends house with friends since Monday and we all agree Madden took a step backwards this year. The controls and graphics seem to have gotten worse. They have the PS2 version so maybe the graphics are better on the other systems but they are still worse than the 04 ones.

Bottom line I'd rather play Madden 04 or ESPN 2K5

Passed on from Dangerboy about Madden 05 Collectors Edition for the PS2. Because of the use of a DVD9 disc type (cause they are cheap and wanted to cram all the bonus material onto A disc instead of having it seperate) early PS2's WILL NOT be able to read the game. He said that 4 people brought their copies back because they wouldn't load OR would load once and then no more. I am fearful for my launch PS2 is sitting over there *me points* and im afraid to open my Madden to see it not work. Either way I wanted the Collectors Edition so i'm going to keep it. Might mean that ive got to get it for XBox so I can play Live though.
