View Full Version : SEGA MASTER SYSTEM
I just picked one up. I was wondering if all of you wonderful SMS experts could recommend some super awesome games. I enjoy shooters and platformers and anything good with the exception of RPGs. I severely dislike RPGs. Thanks to all!

The alex kidd and wonderboy games are all good as is fantasy zone and r-type for shooters. Alot of good titles only came out in brazil, europe ect.
By the way if you own the first advanture island don't get the first wonderboy. They are pound for pound the same game.

The people above recommended a lot of the games I will. Anyway:
Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Alex Kidd in Shinobi World
Shinobi
Hang-On
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Psycho Fox
Wonderboy I, II, III - especially III
Thunder Blade
- I could go on. The SMS has dozens of classics.

For platformers, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Psycho Fox, and Wonderboy III are all definitely worth getting (Psycho Fox can be a bit hard to find sometimes though). And the SMS version of Sonic the Hedgehog is pretty decent in its own right, even though it plays more like a traditional platformer than its faster-paced cousin.
Most of the best shooters (R-Type, Fantasy Zone, Cloud Master) have already been mentioned. Power Strike isn't too bad either, but you should note that it is extremely difficult.
Sega released a lot of decent arcade ports for the system (Outrun, Space Harrier, Afterburner, etc.) which would probably make for good purchases. Choplifter, Rescue Mission, and Zillion are all worth looking into as well.

Alien Symdrome
Golden Axe Warrior
Streets of Rage 1, 2

I still say SMS had the best version of Choplifter.

Wonder Boy III hands down.
Slight RPG elements, but platformer gameplay.
I thought the control in Psycho Fox was absolutely horrid.
That and Golvellius are my all time favs on the SMS, but Golvellius might be a little too RPG for you. But it's action-based.
Man I love Golvellius :)

On the gfx-ogling side:
Kenseiden is simply amazing but it's too damned hard to control.
Shadow Dancer is probably one of the top two performers in graphics, but you gotta get that one outta Australia :(
Sagaia (a Darius game) looks pretty passable on the system, but it doesn't hold a "thing called tuna sashimi" to R-Type (which I've heard is an awesome thing to behold). Looks like it could be fun though.
Ghouls 'n Ghosts is an awesome port - not too hard, and while the levels are mostly true to the arcade game (just scaled down) levels are broken up and the way exit doors work is pretty cool.
The Cyber Shinobi is bad.

Astro Warrior anyone?
You betcha :) And Pit-Pot, which is coupled with it on the Euro 2-in-1. Both top games.
Other great games not yet mentioned (mostly Euro releases):
Micro Machines
The Flash
Bubble Bobble (finest 8-bit version by a mile)
Speedball 2
@ Ed - Shadow Dancer isn't Aus-only. It's a fairly common Euro release aswell.

Meh, the SMS version isn't too hot, really. Certainly not on a par with the Bubble Bobble conversion.

Get yourself a gun! The MS gun is great, and you can play rescue mission with it :-P
Other great (non-gun) games include:
- New Zealand Story
- My Hero
- Secret Command (aka rambo first blood something)
- Sonic Chaos

The Cyber Shinobi is bad.
You can get Shadow Dancer from Europe too.
Sagaia is GREAT!, not quite the masterpiece that R-Type is, but it's still an exellent game.
The Cyber Shinobi is utter CRAP!
If you have 2 guns, I suggest you try Gangster Town. Playing with both guns at once is just awesome.
And I've always loved the SMS port of Road Rash. Sure, it's not quiteas good as the MegaDrive/Genesis version, but for a SMS "3D" racer, it's awesome.

Mickey Mouse: Castle of Illusion is one of my SMS faves, along with Wonderboy 1 and 3 (2 is the weakest of the series) and Cloud Master. You'll enjoy Cloud Master, especially if you like challenging (and weird) side-scrolling schmups.

Stupid question: Do you need a converter to play all these cool Euro-exclusive SMS games?

Damn, pretty much everything I was gonna say was said. Definitely get Phantasy Star and WOnder Boy 3. Golvellius is also a great game. If you want a 2-player cooperative shooter, try missle defense...not the best game, but very unique.....made for 2 player. Alex kidd in Miracle world...very hard, but awesome game.
Black Belt is actually Hokuto no Ken or, Fist of the North Star, if you are into that series....game is OK, much better than the NES games, just not as dark...as the series should be. However, the boss battles freaked me out as a kid...I couldn't believe it was even capable back then on the wee sms.

Re: playing Europe games with US SMS: No need for any converter. Euro games play just fine on a North American console.

Euro games play just fine on a North American console.
Well, MOST of them do...
Asterix and the Secret Mission -slightly more superb platformer
Are you saying it's better than the original? The graphics and music are worse. The frame rate drops. It generally doesn't seem as polished to me. Maybe I didn't play it enough.

You must be confusing Great Rescue with Secret Mission.
Both Asterix, and Asterix & The Secret Mission were developed by Sega, but Asterix and the Great Rescue was developed by another company, and is definitely inferior.
You must be confusing Great Rescue with Secret Mission.
No, I'm not. I still stand by my statement that Secret Mission is not as polished as Asterix, at least cosmetically.
And of course, Great Rescue doesn't even remotely resemble the first two games.
