View Full Version : Got one more video question... waviness in solid colors.

I've noticed with my older games that have portions where it's all one color that that patch of color seems to get wavy. For example, in that part inside the truck in Streets of Rage 2 where the floor is one shade of grey, that part tends to get wavy. Anyone know what causes this? Is it a video option like sharpness or something? Or does using composite inputs do that to you?

Thanks again to anyone who can answer.

Rainbow effects are usually seen in grid patterns, and are caused by composite encoding, as I understand it. S-Video and better does away with that effect.

Alright, I guess it may pay off to mod my Genesis for S-Video. Or get a Genesis emulator on my Xbox.

Thanks a lot. :D

Which model of Genesis do ya have? The only models of mine (that I've tried - keeping that Japanese Mega Drive in the box with the plastic around it for now) which have problems with color are my Genesis 3 units, and I'm running everything off stereo composite cables. Genesis 2 and Nomad look really sharp on my 33" TV.

Genesis 1. I also tried running the XB emulator on composite, same problem. Ran my XB on S-video (and then component), no problem. So I'm guessing that if I mod my Genny, it'll be fine.

I've also had a bit of trouble - color banding - when I was using composite for my GameCube, in Zelda: Wind Waker's ship scenes, but I've never had trouble with Genesis composite outside of the Genesis 3. If you can get S-Video, that'd be great, but I wonder why it's doing that. You only have one thing plugged up to your TV at any one time, right?

I have my XB hooked in in the component input, my GC in the composite, and Genesis in the front AV. I was using a switchbox but that seemed to hurt the video quality a bit, and I'm kind of anal about that stuff. Does hooking multiple things up matter? Even if you have to select between like Video 1, Video 2, and Video 3?
