can anyone confirm this.. a friend told me that the Sega Nomad was actually bein developed by a 3rd party company, but at the last minute sega bought them out and released the handheld under their name.... is this true?

That sounds a little far-fetched. If a 3rd party were developing a portable Genesis compatible (presumably without Sega's consent), why would Sega buy them out when they could have and should have sued them for copyright or patent infringments?

Perhaps your friend is confusing the Nomad with the Atari Lynx? The Lynx was in fact developed indepently by a 3rd-party, Epyx. Atari wanted into the handheld market so they bought the rights to the machine. This is well-documented elsewhere.

Sega developed the Venus on their own, and it later became the Nomad.
