View Full Version : How much would you "sell out" for?

Say one day you woke up and realized that there was more to life than videogames. That instead of collecting games (or even playing them), you were going to head out to the coast and live the rest of your days on the high seas.
Now that this impossible scenario has been presented, on to the real question: how much would it take - in MONEY - to sell every bit of your game collection: games, systems, memorabilia, magazines... all of it?
If your answer is "I would never sell at any price" then don't bother posting here. I'm curious to hear what everyone's collection - large OR small - is worth in actual dollars to them.
Tell me!

Well my collection is somewhere in the middle about 400+ games and 17 systems. My stuff isn't that rare but its stuff I play so my $ amount isn't based on what I think it's worth but what it would take to get me to sell it all. I would sell it all for $20,000

08-11-2004, 02:31 PM
Well I would have to add up every price and figure what my collection is worth :hmm: But then I would take that figure and double it. :P
Seriously though , I would guess about 15,000 - 20,000 $$$$$$$
Probabaly closer to the 15k mark , but 20 k would make me feel better about selling :(

if i heard the words "twenty five thousand dollars" - that would give me serious pause.
i have no idea (honestly) what my collection is worth- but just thinking about that dollar amount would probably cause me to start dumping it.
preferably in one huge lot. hahaha
yeah, thats bound to happen someday- hopefulyl the market will be good when that happens.

I'd say $5000, and that's probably pricing my collection a little high. But I'm guessing that if I really arrived at this kind of mindset where I wanted out then I'd rather not piece it out one item at a time, so that's five grand for all of it right now: all the games, consoles, arcade machines and related mechandise like shirts, pins etc. Take it or leave it.
of course this is all hypothetical so please don't PM me as if I really quoted five grand...

$10,000+
I don't know if it's worth that much, probably not.
But if someone offered me $10,000+ for my entire collection, I'd gladly load it up in the truck for 'em.
With that said, if anyone's got $10,000, then I've got one heck of a deal for you! ;)

SF - Not much of a collection really.

With all the new stuff I'm adding to my collection I really have no idea. I'd say it is worth 10k right now and is going to go up in the future. I'm not going to sell all of it in the future but just a couple of games if I want to make a little money.

Someone would need to offer me at least $50,000-75,000 for my collection in order for me to sell it. I don't own a whole ton of games (I've never bothered to count them; probably in the 250-350 range I'd guess), and some of them are rare, but I own them to play them. Someone would need to really need to give me a lot to take gaming away from me. I don't watch TV, I'm not as avid of a movie fan as most people I know are, and while I love books gaming is probably one of my two primary sources of media consumption.
If someone gives me a lot more than it's worth I'll do it. Otherwise nah - they can go away.

08-11-2004, 02:59 PM
Well, I'd guess my collection is worth no more than about $2000, if I was going to sell it off.
But I'm not.
If the question is what my price would be to get rid of the games, and never get anymore, I'd probably have to say I would begin considering it at around $25,000.
Obviously that's high, and far more than what my games are worth monetarily, but anything less wouldn't have a long-lasting affect on my life ($25k would disappear too, but at least I'd get a new car out of the deal), and I wouldn't want to forfeit an enjoyable hobby without some lasting benefit.

Given your hypothetical situation, am I to assume that I'm choosing to live the rest of my days on the high seas and never playing a video game again? If that's the case, I'd probably need a million or so dollars to get a nice seaworthy vessel. I also don't eat fish so I'd need to make some arrangements to have something to eat up there.
If somebody were to simply buy my entire video gaming collection, I'd let it go for somewhere around $35,000. I'd probably start collecting all over again right away, though.

I dunno...how much you offering?

08-11-2004, 03:30 PM
Lessee now, we're assuming that these are circumstances where I'm saying I'm tired of it, don't need it, not interested anymore, I want it gone.
In this case the two things I'd be looking for are a quick sale and nice pocket full of cash to make me feel good about all the time and money I've spent. So I'd take $1200. Somebody is getting a very nice deal and I'm getting some nice coinage.
If I wanted to take the time to get fair value . . . hmmmmm, I'd probably take $5,000.
You know, I actually ran into someone who was kind of in that situation. He was a collector who was just tired of it and ready to move on.
From him I got: Atari Jaguar and controller, Atari Rom Scanner, 2 Atari kids' controllers, Master System 2, a couple of Pong clones, R.O.B., some lose games for the Master System, Odyssey and Virtual Boy, some kind of Japanese memory cart for the Saturn, and 38 Atari 2600 games.
All for $60. His dad even helped carry it to the car. I actually wish I could have given him more, but I only had $100. I expected there to be some dickering that would raise the price to $80. And I needed the final $20 for an oil change. He must not have minded too much, tho, cuz he later took me aside and offered me a box of another 38 2600 games (mostly Data Age, US Games, and Sega) for another $10.
Of course, this wasnt his whole collection he let go for $70--he still had a lot of stuff I didn't take (this was at the swap meet) and his dad told me he still had boxes back at the house (should have given him my number!)
The point being that sometimes collectors do just hit a wall and are ready to move on. I don't think money was the most important thing to him. He felt he had gotten his money's worth and was willing to pass the torch to another up and coming collector. I respect that. It's sad when a hobby becomes more about collectible value (a trap I sometimes fall into) rather than the love of the hobby.

I'd sell it all for $5000.00 or trade it for a Mac G5, Canon i9900 printer and a Nikon D70 DSLR with a 100-300mm telephoto zoom lens. Anyone interested? Or I would trade away everything but the PS2 for a decent plasma HDTV.

Oh, I don't know, $50,000? MUCH more than it's worth, but that's probably what it would take (if not more). I got just a little under 500 games, a bunch of consoles, tons of magazines, and LOTS of merchandise. One thing that I gotta consider is that while game values may not fluctuate THAT much, my game music CDs very well could. I have no intention of ever selling them, but I do see them as an investment. The majority of mine are already out of print, and the demand for them will never fully go away. An album I pay 20 bucks for now could very easily be worth $100-200 in 5 or 10 years. It's a common occurence.

Of course, the collection is worth far less, but there are a lot of memories tied to most of the games I have, and a lot of them were a complete bitch to track down. I would have an extremely hard time parting with the majority of the stuff I own.

id probably dump all for $25k to $30k. thats a fair amount of money, and thats probably a fair market value.ive got about 3000 games and a bunch of other stuff too...
and if anyone gives Achika a job, and has another one left over(or if you need an assistant Achika!) please let me know...that job would rock.

I actually kind of did this some years back. I was going to sell my 300 Saturn titles or so. I wanted about $3.000.00 for everything. I never had any takes and ended up just ebaying them one at time. I ended up getting about $6.000 to $7.000 for everything. :D
Lets see here, only 600 games couple a of consoles, guids doubles cases posters.............................. . . . . . . .
Id sell out for 15k its not quite worth it, but some of these things Ive had since I was 7, so it wouldn't be to easy for me to give it up.

If someone were to offer me 100K for my collection I'd take it. I've probably spent about 10-20K on my collection to date. That'd be enough to get me out of debt and I'd still have enough left over to buy my own arcade. :bday:

I would have to be bankrolled a nigh infinate amount, and I would still probably want to hang onto a few specific things, or at least know where ti went so I could stop by and see how it's all doing in it's new home.
As for what to do with the money, alright, I'll get the boat. And then i'll use it to travel the world and get back everything I had ++ in all different regions. Or at least go to hong kong and create a comprehensive guide to every peice of pirate hardware I can get my hands on. hey, this could be a show! Capn Cryo's Collectin' 'Round the World! Well since I live on a coast (well close enough to one) it would be weird to just move to some place like Santa Cruz and soak the days away. However with my 1400-1500 or so (mostly) current games and everything to sell it all off and be somewhat happy would be 40-45 Thousand or so. My IGN list seems to think that its worth about 27k (and its incomplete as to everything that I have).
Yah 45 Grand sounds decent for right now...

I dont have much. I sell it all for 3,500... but then if somebody wanted me to move to the east coast? Id never want to go and live there and stay there for the rest of my life, unless someboday paid me like $2,000,000

08-11-2004, 06:56 PM
Well, on actual worth, let's say $50 a system for about 22 consoles and $5 a game at 600 or so games... that would be somewhere around $1100 for systems, and $3000 for games, so around $4100 or so. But including memories, the total gets raised to about...
$20,000. Easy. I just have so many good memories, hell my Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt cart alone would be $5000 because it was my first game. Though, no one in their right mind would pay that...

Right now? About $1500. But I do plan on getting to the point where I can sell out for this:

I could do it now if money problems hadn't forced me to sell out about 3 times in past. But hey! I'm not bitter.
I enjoy the hunt just as much as collecting so starting over is no big deal and that baby has been a dream of mine far longer than owning a complete set of NES games.

I'd seriously consider selling out for $15,000, which is about what I think my collection is worth. Got around 2,000 games going back as far as the 2600. Got quite a few rares too. If I could get a buyer, I guess I'd take it. Could use the money to pay off my debts, buy some nice photo gear and studio equipment and start doing freelance work. I'd just buy a moded Xbox and load it up with roms so I probably wouldn't miss my collection anyway.

Going with the "high seas" scenario you mentioned, assuming I had a good reason to sail the high seas (not some crummy fish gutting job or something, but cruising around the world from port to port on my own yacht with some sort of female compansionship), and I had to leave my collection and about 3 decades of memories behind....a million dollars should do it.

If I didn't care any more, I'd want what my collection is actually worth. Everything included, that's probably somewhere in the neighborhood of $35,000 - $40,000 for around 700 games (mostly rare in case you're wondering), assorted memorabilia, and boxes upon boxes of arcade parts.
If I was to sell my collection NOW...someone would have to offer me around double what it's worth....probably around $75,000-80,000 US for me to even consider it, mostly due to the time and hassle involved in replacing everything!

Alright. I dont have a big collection, but its not exactly small either. 200 or so 2600 games, about 80 Genesis, 20 GB/C/A games, 15 N64, 20 PS1, 40 PS2, and some other stuff as well. What it would take to get EVERYTHING out of here.. man.. I'm going to have to say 10k. I know that its nowhere NEAR worth that amount in pure value, but its just some thing that would be incredibly hard to part with.

I would give all but my five favorite games away to someone who would use them and enjoy them. Of course, this would have to happen after my death.

Get me a MFA scholarship to any of the schools I'm looking at, and I'll even consider throwing in a blood oath to never thrift / rebuild my collection again. I could realistically, be happy with MAME and other emu's. besides, I could still post in here, right? ^^;
if i heard the words "twenty five thousand dollars" - that would give me serious pause. That's all? Sounds like a bargain from what I've heard of your collection!
Right now, I'd probably sell all for $10,000 assuming the buyer came and picked everything up. That's less than it's worth but more than I paid for it. However, if I really decided I wanted to give up gaming period, as in the scenario you described, I'd probably just give it away.

As much as I like all of my games, they are just THINGS. I could live without 'em. If somebody walked in the room right now, and plunked $6000 on the table (which is what I estimate I've spent accumulating it all), and said take it or leave it, I'd take it in a second.
I can always use that money for other things--but then again, it IS only money--and my games have offered me more value than dollars I've spent in entertainment and building of friendships.
Hell--I'd still do it. LOL

5,000 is my highball guess at my collections value. I have CLOSE to 1,000 games or maybe more.... 300 nes, about 220 Saturn, 110 SMS thats, 630, factor in all my other systems and collection I think I've got almost on hundred Sega CD, Plus the complete US NGP and 32X. I have mostly commons but a good number of Rare titles plus a small AES collection. If I heard it was worth 5,000 I would be satisified.... but not sell. If I heard 10,000 Then it would be sold. I can pay off my debts and still have a little left over to start a new collection, or invest in the new baby coming.
PrototypeFC3S

I'd settle for $4,000. I only have about 90 games, and it all leans heavily on the Dreamcast side, so yea, $4,000 sounds about right.
Goblin
02-23-2005, 09:42 PM
I would say I'd sell it all for $5000, perhaps even less. I've often thought about trying to trade it all (or much of it) away in one great big blaze of glory. Maybe everything for a pinball machine, or a new PC. Sadly I've reached a point where I still enjoy the systems, but have too much to ever realistically play and don't need to hold onto much anymore. I think I'd rather enjoy getting a buyout, so I can invest in a few other hobbies that I've wanted to get into for a while.
Iron Draggon
02-23-2005, 10:11 PM
Well let's see, I figure that I have about $50,000 - $75,000 invested in mine, so I'd have to say that I couldn't seriously consider anything less than about $100,000 for all of it. That would be 12 systems and all the accessories for them, and about 1200 games. About half of the games are mint complete, and the rest are mint with manuals. All but about a dozen of them are from the original owner, and were bought new and sealed upon their releases. I have almost all of the rares and true grails for each of the systems, and I also have almost all of the false grails and high demand games for them too. So the way that I see it, what I have is worth every bit of $100,000 right now, because there's no way that you would ever find all those games in the same condition that I have them in today, except from another collector. And if this is a serious question, yes I'm serious. I'd take $100,000 for it right now. I want to buy a house and pay for it in full in cash, and I believe that my collection will allow me to do that someday, or else I'm not gonna sell it. I know it probably isn't really worth that much yet. I know I'd be very lucky if it's even worth what I have invested in it. But it's worth $100,000 to me.

sold my entire collection minus a few special things to get money for guitar equipment. do i regret it? hell no, im getting much more out of the enjoyment of being in a band , and the awesome equipment i have than i ever did with my videogames.
as for a price ... i guess it was around $2000, and some stuff was left over and is still in my collection now (my dreamcast collection, and my AES collection) , so id say the price was right.

Honestly, someone would have to offer me at least $500,000 for my collection. Is it worth that much? Not to anyone but me. Compared to a lot of people on here, my collection is rather meager in size -- a complete Jaguar and Dreamcast collection, some random Xbox, GameCube, SNES, NES and 2600 stuff and a bunch of systems with just a few games apiece. But almost everything has a story behind it.
The 2600? Dad bought it for Space Invaders in 1983 for cheap. I used to pick up tons of carts from rummage sales for a quarter. A few games I got from friends for cheap or free. River Raid 2 is probably my best free "jewel." Played Pitfall 2 to death.
My NES? Bought it with my own money at a comic show I went to with my dad. The person who was selling it sold it to me for $45.00 with 8 games. They included games like Millipede, Maniac Mansion, Super Mario Brothers, and five others that I forget now. I was always amazed that out of the eight, until probably 1995 every other game that I got sold at Funcoland for more than $10.00 apeice. I really got a steal!
My SNES? Got it for Christmas because while I wanted a Jaguar, I thought it was a few years off. Asked for it with Donkey Kong Country. Got that and Indiana Jones. Loved (and still do) DKC.
Jaguar? Found out it was released in 1996 thanks to the Internet. Bought one in 1996 with a friend. That led to a full collection as well as the GOAT Store. I've got some one-of-a-kind protos for it now too.
Dreamcast? Loved the system when it was supported by Sega, now I'm working on the support myself. Love the games, and many have great stories. Again, I own a TON of one of a kinds here.
And if I did sell, I am assuming it wouldn't include my arcade and pinball games or the GOAT Store. Both of those would easily bump it up past a million for me. I can always get money, but I could never get the memories that a lot of this stuff has for me... and that is what really matters to me at least.

Funny you bring this point up, I was thinking about this same topic just for fun. I would gladly walk away from my game collection for a cool 50k........that is 4000+ games, 60 systems, and a crapload of fun!

So does it have to be from a female? If not, that can be arranged! :wink 2:

Sometimes I wonder why I waste all my money on games. I have second thoughts, but are often only random thoughts, and I eventually come to my senses.
Still, a lot of my collection is much more than *Just a game* - I have shed a lot of blood, sweat, and tears obtaining certain things - My heart and soul are in my collection too, so I would never EVER sell any of it for any reason.
I certainly wouldn't want to go through that all over again if I then changed my mind, and I know for a fact some of it I will never ever come accross again in my lifetime - Certainly not at a reasonable price at least!
