I think im going to buy a Sega Saturn within the next week. But I have heard a lot of mixed opinions on the console, some bad and some good. So what do you all think? What are some top games for it? :)

Getting a Sega Saturn for Panzer Dragoon Saga alone is worth the trouble. It is a gorgeous game with an intriguing storyline, and has aged well in the past 6 years.

Of course if you want some multiplayer fun, Bomberman is a can't miss. A more common and still fun game is Grid Runner. Sega Rally Championship Racing is a pretty fun racing game. Sega Saturn has a bad reputation and really was never given a chance because of the low quality inaugural games that first came out for the system. Once the programmers became comfortable with the system, lots better games came out.

By the way, what type of games do you enjoy?

I really like shooters and RPG's. Platformers are good too. :D

Those types of games will cost you on the Saturn. The Saturn itself will only set you back $20-$30 but if you want the best games in the Shooter and RPG department get ready to shell out $100 a game. But at least their some of the best games.

Edit:

you might also want to do a DP search and see what people have recomended in the past since this topic comes up quite a bit.

is it in a box, or is it in the original box that the system comes with, because i am looking for complete in box systems...

The Saturn is a very underrated system, tons of quality games. Go for it, hard to go wrong for the price.

Yeah the Saturn is fun box!
It's a fun system to collect for and damn easy to play super high quality (and mostly affordable) imports on. There are some great peripherals available too.

Once you get hooked up you should get the following
Action Replay 4-in-1. For playing imports and other functions too.
A Stunner or two for some Virtua Cop, House of the Dead, Area 51 action.
3D Controll pad. One word, Nights
S-Video cables. Vivid 2D eye candy
And there's more if you're into collecting hardware as well as software.

You definately should pick up a saturn or anything sega for that matter. There are some great games to be enjoyed over all their platforms, IMO.

I bought mine on ebay a while back complete in its box with all manuals, the original demo disk and 5 games all in great shape for $35 shipped. :D

BTW, The Action Replay 4 in 1 is a must have as evilmess mentioned and with that, you can play a whole new library of games.

How does the Action replay work? I dont really understand. x_x

Cool, another Saturn collector.

Recently I just bought a NIB Jp White saturn to enjoy all those wonderful Import shooters. The Saturn is my favorite system, and I have to say that you are making a good move. I hope you find what you are looking for. 8-)

It's an import convert cart that plays 99% of all import games. It also has a game shark on it as well as the 1 and 4 MB for the games that use it. As well as extra memory but you can't access it directly. you have to transfer stuff to and from the system's memory.

Well ive been on ebay and noticed something, I saw three different packaging variations?Im guessing because they are from other countries, but would that matter if i bought say a euorpean or japanese console. Instead of a US release?

Azazel
08-13-2004, 12:39 AM
Since your probably a US person don't bother with a PAL/European Saturn. As for Japanese Saturn it depends on how many import games you have and how many your going to get. You could get a US saturn and a 4 in 1 for the price of a import Saturn. There are 2 US saturn models. One has the round button and the other has an oval button. There's generally referred to as model 1 or 2. Your best bet is just to have one Saturn and have a converter cart to play other region Saturn games.

Tank

Is there anyway I can tell if it is a PAL Saturn or not? Because every boxed one on ebay is a European release so im guessing thats PAL? So my other alternative is loose, but how can I tell? O_O

Azazel
08-13-2004, 12:51 AM
If it's from Europe it's most likely a PAL Saturn. I've never really looked at PAL Saturn so I can't help you much with telling them about. If your unsure what region the saturn is generally good idea to email the seller and they should tell what region the Saturn is. Don't assume or anything. If you have any local stores around you see if they have any Saturns. They'll probably only have US ones anyway.

most people say that the "round button" Saturn is more reliable so I would go with that one although I've never had any problem with my "oval" one. Unless you really want the box and everything you should be able to find a loose Saturn floating around a thrift store, game store, pawn shop in your area.

Edit:

Also I think your first two games you get should be Nights and Panzer Dragoon Zwei. They will make you feel like you did the right thing.

Cool, another Saturn collector.

Recently I just bought a NIB Jp White saturn to enjoy all those wonderful Import shooters.

I wanted one of those so bad, but the shipping charges are just so high coming from japan that it just doesnt justify the total cost for me. I have tried looking for a US seller but I havent come across one on ebay within my range. :o

LOL I guess I am crazy, but I really wanted the white Saturn, but you are right shipping is crazy. It cost me $70 to get it shipped from Japan to the US, but I say it was worth it. The system I got was practically brand new, so it didn't bother me that much. Once I get some more games for it I will probably buy either the Victor V-Saturn RG-JX 2 model or the Skeleton Saturn to go with it. I might even get both LOL

best system ever made, as well as the best out of segas bunch - so many fun games to get but like they said, some of the best ones never made it here or they are RARE AS HELL aka panzer dragoon saga. my saturn gets the most use but it also sucks up most my money , and i can say its worth every penny 8-)

I got a Saturn a couple of weeks ago, and I have to say that I'm kind of disappointed, because it's the first CD-based system I got that gives me disc read errors (three games I got don't work at all, and one (Nights) crashes at certain gameplay situations). Seems to be very picky with CD scratches :/

Vroomfunkel
08-13-2004, 09:06 AM
I would say that you have picked up a broken Saturn then .. the Saturn is the single CD based console that I have had least problems with. I have hardly found a single disc that it would not play, including a copy of Guardian Heroes I picked up that had such a big, wide scratch on it that you could actually see through the silvering on the disc! But it played fine, the only problem was the music skipped occasionally.

Only one game out of hundreds and hundreds that I have had did not work or gave any kind of error - a really mangled copy of Casper, that I got in a bulk lot. So I wasn't too bothered :)

Sorry to say it, but I reckon you may have been sold a busted Saturn

SEGA RALLY SEGA RALLY SEGA RALLY.

Best. Racing. Game. Ever. Besides F-Zero on the SNES, of course.

Darklight Conflict: Like Colony Wars
Daytona USA Championship Circuit Edition : Great racer
Duke Nukem 3-D: The best FPS on Saturn
Fighters Megamix: Best fighting game for 2 players
Fighting Vipers: Super-cheap, not as good as Megamix though
Galactic Attack: Fantastic 2-D shooter

High Velocity: Cheesy but fun racer
Last Bronx: Awesome weapons fighter
Loaded: Cool & gory overhead shooter
Manx TT: Great motorcyles, great graphices, great speed

Mr. Bones: Dozens of mini-games, great plot & music
Nights: A classic.
Pandemonium!: One of the best 2-D platformers on the Saturn
Powerslave: Fantastic FPS
Quake: Ditto
Sega Rally Championship: BEST RACER EVER
Sky Target: 3-D Afterburner
Soviet Strike: Classic isometric shooter
Steep Slope Sliders: A really fantastic game, seriously!

Virtua Cop 2: Classic
Virtua Fighter 2: A fighter that defined the Saturn
Virtua Fighter Remix: VF1 with better graphics
Virtua Racing: I love this game
World Series Baseball II: Best BB game on Saturn

The import market has calmed quite a bit, and many of the Saturn imports that regularly went for $50+ are now much cheaper... have to deal with a lot of shipping charges from Japan, unfortunately. EMS is very reliable for shipping, though.

I'll agree with you about the Saturn's durability. I've had about 500 various saturn games and have only had one that had problems playing and some of them weren't in the greatest condition.
