Has anyone heard what they are? I'm talking about concrete numbers, not what your local dumbass EB sales person said he/she heard. Rock on

Hey? Aren't you the one and only RCM?
Sorry.. couldn't resist.
I'd be interested to hear numbers too. I see commercials for Madden running during the same show as commercials for NFL 2K4 and would like to know how well it's doing.

don't know personally but lets just say at my gamecrazry we went through 4 shipments of ESPN 2k5 in one week and we had madden since monday night (we got it early) and we have so many sitting there where tripping over them, no ones been picking up pre-orders or anything. I think ESPN sold bigger than madden

If this number in the article is correct, then the price drop was a big success temporarily! Sega achieved what they tried to achieve. ESPN has now a good starting position to compte with Madden. If the franchise with a broadened customer base and a higher price tag can compete with Madden in the next two years remains to be seen.

this is indeed a great day if madden is going to get his ass kicked.
IT would also be a great day if it started a trend, sports titles starting at 20 bucks....next to lottery tickets, and 8-track tapes, sports titles are some of the most utterly worthless things on the planet.

Ooh. Actually my 8-track collection would disagree with you there. No, I'm not kidding either. :)

Until next year, when you have to root against the evil ESPN sports franchises and pray that EA can crack their armour

nah. madden's been pissing me off for years.
I am interested to see what effect this has on Madden. I am shocked by the news, I don't think anybody would have expected the title to sell so much so fast. I wonder if it has made more money then last years ESPN NFL game.

Anybody can be fooled into buying a sub-par sports game for $20.
Seriously, the Sportscenter tie-ins are worth $20, the game play is worth spending the extra $$$ for Madden.

Speaking as a "local dumbass EB sales person" ESPN did extremely well. We've probably sold about 50-60 copies since it came out. However it's not anywhere close to kicking madden's ass; Madden at our store has already sold 200+ copies in less than a week.
Hopefully tho, ESPN's success will encourage more cheaper sports games. Paying $50 for what is essentially a very SPARSE expansion pack's worth of changes is the biggest rip in the gaming industry.

To be fair, you can see where the programers spent most of the last year working on and there's some nice changes to Madden this year. Last year was only average, but this year is quite good.
I'm waiting for new rosters available for download on XBox Live for both ESPN and Madden before I start franchises, but I've had good games on both of them online.
Basicaly, whoever said ESPN wins in susbtance and style (SportsCenter) and Madden wins in pure gameplay is right. Both are god games, though.
Until I can carry over my created character from one year to the next, they all suck. I'm sick and tired of having rookies each year. I want my guy to have a career, damn it!

Then do waht I started doing last year:
Buy NCAA Football as well as Madden, start playing a college, develop your college guys, import them into Madden, and draft them into your team.
It is SO much fun to have the same guy playing for you, college and pro, for 15-20 years. :D

Speaking of Madden, is there any truth to what's being claimed on a gaming e-mail list I'm on that this is the last year for Madden? They say he's retiring as a broadcaster so the game would be no more. This doesn't mean that EA would stop making an NFL game, of course, but that (if true) they might take Madden's name off it. I'd find it hard to believe but Madden has been around for centuries....or so it seems.

Even if he stopped broadcasting why would they stop naming the game after him? I'm sure he wouldn't say no to the checks :P
Jasoco

Wouldn't he still have to record the voices? Player names will change eventually, they can't use the same recordings for long. So I'm sure it would finally disappear. So long, Madden. Time to let other Football games lead the pack.

I guess they could align it with the network and call it Monday Night Football...though there's even been talk of moving football to a night other than Monday...

from a used standpoint my store has had 2 copies of ESPN traded in already and one copy of madden 2005 so far.
I've heard mixed reviews of both games.
If I personally played sports games...I'd go with the $20 ESPN game or a used madden 2004 for $13.

Just play Franchise Mode, and you can have as many careers as you want. That's what I love about Madden, its as deep or shallow as you need it to be. My friend LOVES the Franchise and gets totally deep in the trading and front office part of it (he has even started running all the games in sim mode and doesn't even play them any more), as where I just want to play football.
As to the rest of you, no more Madden? bite your tongues.

I am the type of person that hates monopolies and loves good, healthy competition. I am also a huge sega fan.
Whether espn outsells madden, I don't care. 1mil+ sales is a glorious day for sega. It is about 2:40 in the morning over here, and when I wake up tomorrow, I am going to buy a brand new copy of espn and leave it unopened just to mark this special occasion.
good for sega. i like the fact that about 2 weeks ago there was a thread saying that sega went budget, and that everybody will see that, and espn will sell crappy. I am not arguing, the numbers are there. What is there to dispute. Sorry, I am just very happy for sega. The point of what is I just said is that many people doubt sega, and when they try something crazy, people think sega is just piling themselves into the ground. i love sega, and have seen sega go through its ups and downs and have been around with them since i was a kid with the sms (my mom was nice enough to give it away). now they tried something that people said couldn't be done: make a quality game for $20 and have it sell very well. it did it. maybethey were desperate, maybe not, but whatever they were trying to do, with 1mil+ sales, they did it.
my hat is off to sega today, and tomorrow i will support this trend by going out and buying a brand new copy of espn 2k5.

There Gamespot did all the hard work for you!! They actually sat down with both and went over the pros and cons of each one. ESPN won by the way.

I put my money where my mouth was yesterday - I had some b-day loot and I had a hankering for some football.
(Plus I'm a Dolphin's fan and I wanted to see a season where Williams and Boston played... :( ).
That ESPN game is *really* tempting at that price but I still went with Madden. I figured why take a chance that I won't like it as much? I *know* that I'm going to enjoy Madden, because that's what I've enjoyed in the past.
The question of 'supporting monopolies' or liking Sega or EA more is moot.

Regardless of how much more Madden will sell it is still a good day for Sega. Hopefully it will carry over to NBA 2K5 and NHL 2K5. Seeing as they too will be sold for only $20.00. :)

ok after that 2 solid weeks of ESPN, I have since played about a solid week of Madden. I think I have to give a slight edge to ESPN.. so far I just kind of enjoyed playing it more and it's pretty much as simple as that. Just my opinion. Anyway it doesn't really matter as I bought both :P

I think it will carry over - I know I'm personally *much* more open to buying NHL 2K5 over NHL 2005 (since I don't think anybody really dominates hockey games yet...)

What I don't understand is the need for one to be "better" than the other? I think both games have their individual merits and their downsides. I like both, but I like the gameplay of Madden better and the presentation of ESPN better. Regardless, they are both solid football games (despite the shot I took at ESPN earlier ;) ) Why does one need to be "the better game?"
Especially when ESPN is priced so that you can have both and not be out $100.

Why does one need to be "the better game?"
How else would you choose between the two? ;)
(It's all subjective to be sure, and it's obviously possible that you'd like both equally, but this isn't a genre where you often walk out with *both* games so some hard decision making has to happen).

I just don't like that 1/2 of my friends are online in ESPN, while the other 1/2 are online in Madden. If one were clearly "better", I wouldn't have to: A) waste money buying both, or B) pick a side.

Ah, but if BOTH are good in their own right, there is no "waste" of money, you are going to get two good games that are worth what you pay for them. No? And then you don't have to pick a side, you can play both. You'l lbe the friend of everyone! :)

I heard that Madden didn't have an online season mode yet. Is that true? I also heard they might charge you for season play.

I'm not sure what you mean.
I've played both Madden and NCAA on EA's servers. (Nice touch -- they have a ticker on the bottom with sports scores of the day!) Both games allow you to play quick games, enter lobbies and find players, do tournaments, and call up friends on your list.
Also, I did'nt see any mention of additional prices. My XBox Live kit came with a full year.
ESPN does'nt allow any season play either online -- tournaments exist in that one also. There's susposed to be a roster update (finally!) for that one today.

ESPN does have season mode with trades and everything :) very cool. I have the PS2 version is that different than the Xbox live version?

I dunno, I have the XBox version of all three games.
I'll check out ESPN again later on today. Maybe I just missed it.
