I've gotta wonder if any game has more ports and versions than TETRIS.
PErsonally i've wound up with 7 versions in my own collection.
So, of them all, which one do you prefer?
Personally, of the versions i own, i'll stick with the ORIGINAL console port; Tengen Tetris for NES. I find it to be one of the most unique versions, with the 2 player co-op and vs modes, as well as the vs the nes mode.
Barred that, i'll take 3-d tetris on Virtual Boy. But I must note, I am a total sucker for any VB game...LOL
Which do YOU prefer?

Tetris on Nes is the best IMO.
But I really like Tetris Plus for the PSX as well.

Tetris for the original GB had the best music. So I pick that one. A very close second if not tied for 1st is Tetris Attack for ths Snes, I love that version.

I'm partial to Sega's arcade tetris on MAME, which is pretty close to Tengen NES Tetris. After that comes XBox Tetris, for the online play & the fact that I can have it pump some good trance mixes while I'm playing. Really helps hit the Tetris zen, and the variants are pretty fun, unlike most Tetris games.
Sadly, it's deeply flawed at lower levels in that it has a slight variant on the 'rotate the piece in mid-air and it won't drop as quickly' bug, but at higher speeds there's no time for that happy crap.
Tetrisphere also gets a nod for the music.

I'd go with Tetris for the Original Game Boy as well.
That just plain rocks, and is by far the best Tetris available. I Couldn't count the number of hours we poured into that game.
Though the other Tetris game I seem to remember loving was Tetrisphere on N64. It's not Tetris, but it rocks too!

Tetris DX for me, closely followed by the GB original. And while it's nothing to do with 'traditional' Tetris, I prefer Tetris Attack on the SNES to any of them.

I would have to say that Tetris for the Gameboy is my favourite. Although I have been having a lot of fun with Tetris Plus for the gameboy recently.

The Tengen Tetris for the NES remains my fave, though I'm quite partial to Tetrisphere for the N64.

Tengen Tetris. I remember renting it from a video store when I was younger... wanted the game really bad after that. Of course it wasn't in stores anymore at that time
The Gameboy version clocks in a close second. My original Gameboy's buttons were worned down because of this. Well, one button alteast :)

In terms of music and general atmosphere, I prefer the original Gameboy version. But I think V-Tetris on the Virtual Boy is better to play. I remember the first time I played it, I noticed there was something odd about it.
Only after like fifteen minutes I realised that it's this: The blocks don't fall in a jerky way, like virtually every Tetris port out there, but rather in a fluent, continuous motion. Add to this the fact that blocks will still rotate easily when they've already hit the blocks below, and you can see why this is my favourite 8-)
The only disadvantage to this port is that the game is way too easy, and you don't get anything interesting after level 9, apart from a silly piece of Engrish :o

I quite enjoy The New Tetris on N64. Four player mode, decent music and refined play make it my "choice" version.

I love Tetris Attack. Its only one of two games my wife can kick my butt at though. The other being Atari 2600 Frostbite.

Tetris for the original GB had the best music.
You never played the C64 version then... cos that has the best music ;)
It is also the second EVER (after the PC) version to be released of the game in the West, way back in Xmas 87.
As for best version overall, my vote goes to Tetris DX.

After all these years, I think the only Tetris game I own is still the original Game Boy one. o_O You'd think I would end up with more, but, eh, I've never been a huge Tetris fan so there you go.
I have been playing a bit of Tetris lately surprisingly, though. I've barely touched in several years. It's good for travel and when you don't want any gaming "commitment". I really admire and respect the original approach to the Game Boy. It was so pure and captured perfectly what a handheld should be. Man, there were so many puzzle games back then, and so many other games that you could pick up, be playing instantly, and you could stop at any time. Game Boy seemed to evolve into being a smaller version of the home consoles as the years went on with all sorts of complicated home console style games. Not that they're bad games, but I kind of miss those simpler days.
Oh, and getting back to Tetris, I was play a Tetris machine at a local arcade not long ago. :) It was fun but kind of embarassing because the machine's volume was PAINFULLY loud. I managed to get on the high score list, though. ^_^

CD-i Tetris. That game has the most relaxing atmosphere with it's music and backgrounds. Though that comforting mood doesn't help on level 11 when the blocks are flying down at you. It's a must have title for CD-i owners.

First choice is original GB tetris. Second is tengen tetris. third is NES tetris. I havent had a chance to check out VB tetris yet though, and that might change things.

My three personal favorites:
Atari Tetris (Arcade). A good challenge with some interesting levels. Would be even better if it had an alternate rotate button.
Tetris (Game Boy). Still stands the test of time after all these years. There are times when I can't resist playing this game.
Tetris Plus (various). The puzzle mode where you try to get the explorer to the bottom without him/her getting crushed by giant spikes is a nice touch. I also liked the level creator.

1. Tetris DX
2. Tengen Tetris NES
3. Nintendo Branded Tetris NES
Why Is the nintendo branded one on my list even you may ask? Well because it was readily available and I spent many an afternoon playing it and watching it over at friends' houses. I never even got the tengen version until like 2002.
Also a close favorite tetris(clone) like game for me is Block out for the Atari Lynx.
