My pick is Final Fantasy 6. Especially the final multi-screen boss.

Your picks?

Chrono Trigger, hands down.

There are scenes in that game that rival PLAYSTATION graphics! O_O

I feel bad for American-only gamers. They often miss out on the most visually impressive games for each system. :P

SNES - Star Ocean, with Tales of Phantasia, Seiken Densetsu 3, Donkey Kong Country 3, Chrono Trigger, and others being mighty impressive as well.

Genesis - Hmmm... so many inventive graphical manipulation techniques in many games, but it's hard to pick one that stands above all the others. Some of the best would be Sonic & Knuckles, Gunstar Heroes, Vectorman, Flashback, Ranger X, etc.

Almost word for word what i would have said just would have added bahumut lagoon. I mean star ocean has actually voices and stuff in the game. I would also like to add the megaman x games to the list.

For genesis hmmmmmmmm maybe rocket knight adventures, shinobi 3,virtual racing (sort of) ummmmm i'll need to think of more.

Seiken Densetsu 3 has, hands-down, the greatest graphics of any system of that era.

Im a die hard genesis fan. however i had a hard time thinking about games with beautiful graphics.

I think the genesis definitely doesnt have better graphics than snes ...but what counts is seeing them in motion...genesis games dont have hundreds lof colors, but they generally have bigger sprites, more speed, etc than snes games....(gunstar heroes comes to mind...the graphics are amazning...but i wouldnt grade them as a work of art)

Not much to add, but god the graphics on Sonic still look sweet to me when you're zooming around like crazy. Only wish that getting hit and losing 100 coins didnt make so much slowdown

For Genesis: Vectorman
Back when I played Vectorman 2 in a store kiosk (when I was little) it looked awesome. Now it just looks muddy.

Style award:
Best-looking titles on the Mega Drive are Wonder Boy VI and VII (Monster World III and IV, respectively); Beyond Oasis isn't even second but is still worthy of a mention. Comix Zone is a bit darker and muddier than Beyond Oasis, but is more complex graphically and it's the best of the 1990s American-style graphics on the system thanks to the literal use of comic book ideas. Super Fantasy Zone is awesome, as well.

Most accomplished technicals/details:
So far, in my limited experience with the platform Light Crusader has the best use of highly detailed characters, and there's really no arguing that the technical aspect can be bested. Despite the insane amount of detail, though, this title still manages to have bland environments :(

Yoshi's Island. It's just the epitomy of 2D gfx for me. It's what happens when you take a genre that's at saturation point (2D Platformer) and add your own personality and artistry. Previous Shigsy games had his personality all over them but not in the graphical sense that this game has. As far as I'm aware it was a very concious decision by Shigsy to make the gfx look hand-drawn and childish as a backlash to all the realistic gfx being touted by Sony and Sega - how arty farty is that!? I don't think this game has aged one bit and I think that's to do with it's timeless beauty. Get the feeling I love this game!? :D

Not that it's a wonderful port, but the graphics for the Genesis version of Shadow of the Beast still make me say wow (especially that darned overworld!) It's pretty close, visually anyway, to the Amiga version, with an occasional addition of nifty parallax effects. The gameplay is brutal, though, and the sound is inexcusable.

For snes Id Say Terranigma/Illusion of gaia 2

Well, for the Genesis, I'm going to have to go with Batman & Robin. The special effects and animation in that game are pretty wild.

For the SNES, I'm going to have to second Yoshi's Island. I still think it's the most beautiful 2D platformer there is.

My second vote for the SNES is Street Fighter Alpha 2. It's actually not to far off from the arcade version except for the animation.

Mega Drive/Genesis: Gunstar Heroes

Super NES: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

I can't limit it to just one, so I'll just start wildly naming games at random.

SNES: Super Castlevania IV, Castlevania: Dracula X, Axelay, Legend of the Mystical Ninja (Ganbare Goemon), Ganbare Goemon 2, Super Mario RPG, Super Turrican 2

Genesis: Gunstar Heroes, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Contra: Hard Corps, Splatterhouse 3

... dammit, I know there's more. I'll edit later, perhaps.

I've only played it in an emulator, but the MD version of Flink looks in certain aspects better than the CD32 original, which is one of my personal favorites graphics-wise :)

Genesis: Red Zone

Other than the overhead helicopter view (that rotates when you turn), the multi-layer overhead shooting levels, the full motion video intro is a very impressive sight for a stock Genesis.

Secret of Mana
The DKC series

Genesis: Rocket Knight Adventure, original Sonic 1 (JPN verison was better in detail imho), Contra: Hard Corps (Nice usage of Mode 7), Thunder Force 4

SNES: Chrono Trigger, FF6, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Donkey Kong Country 1, Super R-Type, Contra 3: The Alien Wars

Name a SNES title that looks better than Wonderboy V: Monster World III, or (especially) Wonderboy VI: Monster World IV. Maybe as good, but better? That'd be something!

Yeah...Super Mario RPG uses some pretty ugly color dithering at times. Secret of Mana is indeed primitive. Now Chrono Trigger - if that's what you mean - THAT'S got some good graphics, but blow away the two I mentioned? No; nothing on the SNES I've run into could be said to have a landslide victory over those two, in terms of style and color usage only.

Didn't the graphics in Toy Story 2 for the Genesis seriously push the system's palette to its limits though in color usage?

Well did you know that Tales of Phantasia has a MP3 as it theme song and its the BIGGEST cart ever made for the SNES! IMO, its the best game to show off what the SNES can do. Mega Man X3 was also another game that showed off the SNES and its a great game, now we just need an MM X collection for GC, XBOX, and/or PS2. As for the Genesis, i havent played it as much as the SNES, I was impressed with the Splatterhouse series and Castlevania: Bloodlines.

Genesis: Red Zone

Other than the overhead helicopter view (that rotates when you turn), the multi-layer overhead shooting levels, the full motion video intro is a very impressive sight for a stock Genesis.

I second that! This game is pretty awesome for a Genny title... the developers even included a screen at the beginning of the game that details all the advanced programming tecniques they used. Too bad it flashes by so fast!

Panorama Cotton is another game that has been mentioned that really shows what the Genesis could do, and without built-in scaling and rotation at that! None of the emulators I've tried can play the game correctly.

I STILL think F-Zero is the best racing game ever made, and I don't think I've said "wow!" like the first time I saw it. Me and my roomie ignored it until we finsihed Mario, but then F-Zero drew us in and didn't let go. I STILL fire it up once in a while...13 years after playing it!

I though DOOM was damed impressive for a SNES game... same for Stunt Track FX. They may look like ass now, but they were pretty darned impressive for a system with a slow CPU. Those FX chips did some cool stuff. I would have loved to have seen a running version of Comanche (cancelled in part due to pixilated graphics... sniff)

The Japanese Sonic 1 was a bit more detail in a few levels of the game.

The first three levels include scrolling clouds

The Labrynith Zone has wavy underwater effects when you are under water.

The only way to see these "improvements" is to either hope you get this "ver 2" of Sonic 1 from Japan or get "Sonic Jam" on Saturn
