I went into a Best Buy earlier today and as I went over into their video game section I saw a display case with a late model Sega Genesis inside. I was like "What the hell is that for?" and turned around to see a section of their video games had been reserved for used older games. Among them were loose NES carts, boxed SNES and Genesis carts, PSX games, and older PS2 games for fairly good prices. (All loose NES were $2.99, PSX games were $4.99, and so on.)
When the heck did they start doing this? The store I used to go to doesn't sell older games...or at least they didn't two weeks ago.

My local BestBuy doesn't sell used games. :hmm:
My cousin works there so I asked him and there are no plans of ours doing it either.

The store I was at was in Orland Park, Illinois if anyone in the area wants to check it out.
The Genesis display was quite odd though.

Nice thing is that my BBuy is literally within home run distance of my Goodwill. If BBuy sucks I can always limp over to Goodwill for some good old fashioned impulse buying :P
By the way, the sig owns, QOF!

Just out of curiosity, how much was the Genesis console going for?

I sure hope my BB starts selling used games....the more places I can find them, the better I always say.

They weren't selling the console. It was just all nicely layed out in a display case in the middle of the aisle and a boxed game (can't remember which one it was) was propped up inside too, like a museum piece or something. The odd part was that just the system/game was inside...there wasn't anything written about it anywhere. If you didn't already know what it was, you'd think it was some new unit coming out or something.
Another thing was that all the used games came in one of those locked plastic clamshell cases so you couldn't open them up to get a good look at them.
I picked up Family Feud for the PSX for $4.99 so I was happy. :D

Are you sure it's not another company repackaging these games (ala Games Trader or [insert another company here])?

Didn't see anything. The price tags all said Best Buy...but they also all said "Dreamcast Software" as well. :hmm: (Oh yeah, they had Dreamcast, Gameboy, and Game Gear games there too.)
I might go again tomorrow (er, this afternoon since it's now 2am) and see what's up.

@Hellvin:
That Kill Bill lightbox poster is fucking sweet. I've got dibs on the one at the CC where I work. I've also got my dvd collection stored in the Kill Bill Vol. 1 cardboard merchandiser ;).

Hell yeah, I'm looking foward to putting them up. My kill bill box holder doesn't fold correctly at the bottom =\, it doesn't seem to latch right with the tabs.

Defenitely tell us what's up with this QoF, I would like to know from an employee why they're doing this/how they are/and if any other stores are doing it.

I worked at a Best Buy in the media department for about 2 months before I quit because it was the worst job I ever had...
They basically expect you to act like commissioned salespeople except you don't get any commission. The constant threats of firing or cutting my hours because I didn't offer that annoying netflix deal to EVERY SINGLE PERSON on the floor (yes, literally every single person) were a bit over the top.
EB makes me much happier and you gotta love getting first pick of everything that comes through at 25% off heh.

I worked there as well some years ago, i also consider it one of my worst jobs ever.

Yup. Sucks, huh?

They have upgraded to threating to cut hours now?
Back to topic:
I dont think this is stuff leftover in the back because Best Buy wouldnt really have any of that left over. If they were remians from the early 90's i doubt they would attempt to sell them because they wouldnt have active SKU's.

What I've heard is that Best Buy is testing out at certain stores a new buy/sell games/dvds section. There were some employees at stores that were asked if they wanted to sell games/dvds to them, and they got back a little cash obviously, and now Best Buy is selling them.
I don't know if this is true or not, but the boys over at CAG believe it to be true. Some guy there also scanned in a receipt from the Orland Park BB.
Wouldn't be that bad to be able to pick up some old games for $2.99 at your local BB if you ask me.

Aw crap, now I've got competition. LOL
The test market thing makes sense...it's located in a HUGE shopping district. (Name a store/restaurant and it's somewhere in the general vicinity, I'm not kidding.)
Jeez, I just realized there's now at least sixteen used game stores in a half-hour radius around me. :eek 2:

Can't remember the name of the program but Best Buy here in Burbank is doing it. Not just with games either but old vcrs, computers, stereos, etc. The trade-in is done via a different company that operates at the customer service counter. They have a web-site too but the name escapes me. Trade-in is terrible. In the display in the store they have an old push-button vcr as an example of getting cash for your old electronics, but according to the website they don't even accept such old junk, and even newer DVD players you only get like $10 in trade-in.

So does this mean that BB will now be filled with pawn-shop quality crackheads trying to milk drug money out of their toaster?

If this is successful, I can only imagine the clerks at Best Buy telling me I can save money by purchasing a preowned copy of the new game I'm trying to buy. LOL
