At the thrift store the other day, I ran across this "movie" which was only priced at $2, so I picked it up. It's a pretty terrible combination of animation and 3D computer graphics (both of which are pretty brutal on their own) that lasts about 30 minutes. The storyline starts off almost identical to the live-action movie, with Sonya, Cage, and Kang all on a boat being helped out by Raiden and such... but the thing abruptly ends when the tournament is just about to begin, and just shows bios of some of the characters. The video seems like it was meant as a promotional gimmick for the movie as well as Mortal Kombat 3 (In fact, it flashes a code for MK3 at the end of the credits). There is supposedly a feature on the making of the Mortal Kombat movie at the end too, but I didn't get around to watching that.

The copy I have repeatedly warns you that it's for screening purposes only, with the message appearing at the bottom multiple times throughout the movie, and the sleeve for the movie has a big stripe across it that says "for promotional use only" and such. Heck, the intro even encourages you to call the piracy hotline and turn in anyone who sold/rented you the tape.

Any idea how rare these tapes are? Is this an amazing find, or something that shows up all the time? As bad as the actual movie is, I'm not interested in selling it... just curious about it.

It seems there's an entry on IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363828/) for this thing.

this is actually EXTREMELY common, just some kinda promotional VHS like you explained. I run across them just about every video rental store I go to.

I remember when I was young (13 or 14) I picked up a CASE of these at the flea market for next to nothing and sold them at 2.00 a pop sealed to friends.

The movies are decent, I suggest go buying the movies, but this VHS is an utter dissapointment. :(

I have one that I bought at retail a long time ago and don't remember any of that stuff popping up. I don't think it will be worth much money, but a cool collectible either way.

That MK series was also on the USA network with a street fighter show that wasn't Street Fighter 2v. If they released that whole lineup of cartoons on Saturday I would be very pleased.
