So I just spent $40 on a new VCR so I can play my $9.99 Action Max game system, and I'm curious:
What's the oddest thing you had to buy to play the game / system you wanted to play? The regular answers of game, controller / memory card etc don't count. :)

I'd have to say the CD attachment, the game convertor, AND the Arcade Card Pro for the Turbografx 16. At first, I just wanted it for Akumajo Dracula X: Chi no Rondo. That's still the main reason, but now I'm finding many more uses for it, such as Gate of Thunder and Ys Book 1 and 2. Thankfully, I got the system, attachment, convertor, and card, thanks to the courtesy of the seller... you know who you are. ;)

This wasn't me but a buddy bought the vibrator for Rez (PS2) that was only released in Japan. Twisted.
Me? I guess the most I've ever spent to play one game is the PC I just bought to play City of Heroes. (I'm a Mac user.) I'll probably find more uses for the PC, but I make no secret that the PC is for that game.
I have the Rock and Roller for the NES, which I have a lot of fun using with racing games, but I didn't buy it for a particular game.

I bought a PAL PSOne and monitor combo during my last trip to the UK just so I can play some PAL-exclusive PSX games.
Now all I need to do is get off my ass and buy a power converter. LOL

A second television, second Gamecube, second broadband adapter, Xbox link cable (oh, the irony!), second copies of Kirby Air Ride and 1080 Avalanche, and an eight memory card to play LAN GCN games.

Got a Japanese PSone ...because I had one or two games that wouldn't work on a modded system.
Got a pair of 13" broadcast monitors ...because games look mighty nice on 'em.
Bought a TI 99/4A for the express purpose of playing Tunnels Of Doom. 'Tis a noble reason, methinks.
Someday, I'm gonna get a Gamecube...just to play Pac-Man Vs. (OK, well, not just that game, but it's the only 'Cube game I have at the moment... LOL )

I bought the Saturn I have off eBay just to try NiGHTS... still haven't bought NiGHTS, though.
Bought a PSX just to play Bubble Bobble again. That game makes a PSX worth it. (Saturn too. But of course, BB is impossible to find on the Saturn cheaply and since I already have BB for PSX which I got before it became rare I had to get a PSX for it.)

Well, this isn't really all that strange of a purchase, but I just had to buy a widescreen HDTV to fully enjoy the visuals of my Xbox and Gamecube games. But this only a natural purchase. It goes with the home theater system.

I bought my GCN just because my parents bought me a GC game for my birthday (Mario Party 4), thinking I could use it in my N64. So instead of returning the game, I bought myself a new system.... makes sense to me now... doesnt it make sense to everyone else???

Funny you should ask such a question. I just traded Final Fantasy Anthology, Final Fantasy Chronicles, and Chrono Cross (all PS1) for a Pro Action Replay 2...for the express purpose of playing these couple PAL version SNES games I have (Illusion of Time and Lufia). I would've got a transformer for my PAL version Super Nintendo, but I couldn't find a good one cheap enough...

I bought a new Turbografx 16 system just to play Galaga '90.
Still haven't found any other games I'd thought were interesting enough to buy for the system.
But this one game makes it worthwhile. :)

To all of those who mentioned using a Dreamcast to play 8-bit games... How did you go about doing this? Are any system modifications necessary? I've heard many a story about the possibility of doing such a thing... The problem is that I'm, well, completely and totally technically inept. Any info on turning my Dreamcast into a mean emulation machine would be very much appreciated.
Oh.
If this post is in any way out of line with the rules of the board, I apologize.

Took the words out of my mouth.
Mine would have to be spending $150 mainly to have a wireless headset for XBox Live, but it also gets used for my cell phone which is its main purpose. The XBL was just enough to justify the cost for me.
Buying a computer monitor just becouse I got a dreamcast with a vga addapter and no av hook ups. Oh yeah it was a third dreamcast at the time.

I bought a new TV because my old one cut off the top half-inch of so of the picture. Otherwise, it worked just fine. Certainly made using FFX's Sphere Grid interesting.

I just had to play SWG last year around this time so I spent $400 on a Geforce4 TI 4600 card. Of course that game sucked but it was money well spent.
Currently I'm close to replacing my old Falcon Northwest Mach V PC with a brand new (expensive) P4 Mach V.

I bought a GameCube in Feb. just so I can play Eternal Darkness. The hype and intresting system with a great story, made me buy it. I haven't found other games that ticked my fancy yet. There have been a Few like Mega Man Collection and F-Zero GX. There are a few that are coming out i want Alien Hominide and Metroid Prime 2.

I bought a Genesis 3-button controller so I could play Golden Axe 2. I found out the hard way that the game won't play correctly with a 6-button controller.
Can't think of anything else besides that.
I purchased an atomiswave Demolish fist kit for $460 shipped from coinopexpress a while ago when it was on sale, so I could play future 2d fighting games on the system.
Now all the 2d fighters come out at $1000 and are only packaged with a motherboard. :o
