There's a very detailed .pdf guide on the Gamefaqs Genesis Hardware page.
It's a piss-easy mod - you just have to cut two traces and solder switches onto the jumpers. 10 minutes work, if that!

Also i have a megadrive which was made 18 (ithink) DEC 1991 ive heard these have no lockouts and no license screen? i saw this date stamped otno the Mobo when i was cleaning it yesterday
What does the license screen look like becuase most gams just display the sega logo and start up or have this screen that sings SEEEEEEGGAAAA with the logo on and disapeers...

The original models without the licence check all have an 'EXT' port on the back which looks similar to the controller ports. If that's there on yours you've got an original. They still have region lock-outs(*), but can play the early unlicensed games.
The licence screen is just a black screen that says "Produced by, or under license from Sega Enterprises Inc." It pops up after you turn the machine on, before the 'Sega' logo.
Dunno about case mods 'cos I think they almost always look crap.
(*) Region lock-outs on Megadrive/Genesis games were generally only used on games post '94, although a few earlier 3rd Party games may have problems on non-native hardware.
