I have several old video game posters (NES, SMS, & Atari) I'm thinking of getting laminated, so I can put them up on the wall in my "game room." Lamination would preserve the posters as they are now, and are a cost effective choice versus framing, since I have access to a free laminator. But I have a part of me screaming "NOOOO!! DON'T DO IT YOU IDIOT!!" Obviously, lamination would probably kill any "collectable" value they have (if any), since the posters won't be in their original state. So what do I do? Listen to my "little voice," or laminate away?

By the way--sorry for the lack of porn, it was just a cheap way to get hits. I bet you all fell for it too

I'd say "no". Here's what I do (and what classmates do) when we put up work that isn't finished.

Go get some Bull-Dog clips and some foam core or posterboard. (BullDog is a brand name, they usually come in black--but these are what I could find quickly)

http://www.staples.com/Catalog/Browse/SKU.asp?BCFlag=False&PageType=1&SKU=831628

Cut the posterboard/foam core a little larger than the clip and put one piece on the front and back of the poster. Clip that between the bull-dog clip and flip the metal brackets up. Slip the brackets over a tack. Put more of these on the bottom of the poster to keep them taunt. Still saved from prosperity, yet not altered forever!

You can get fairly low cost poster frames at Hobby Lobby, Michales, etc. They have a clear plastic front, cardboard backing with a hanger and plastic rails to hold the rails on. I don't think it would be too hard to cut them down to the size you need.

Lamination is an excellent way to preserve your posters, I have several that I have laminated, The thing is this do you plan to keep your posters for a nostalgic tripp everytime you look at them ? or do you plan on having them with the intent of re-selling them for money later on down the rode? When you can answer that to that little voice in your head you should be able to come to a logical solution. I think however you want to do this because you enjoy them and it's something that makes a great show-piece and addition to any game room. No matter what you choose to do remember that laminated or not there will always be someone willing to buy your game goods. Now this brings me to a Question would you happen to have any of the old Konami posters that Konami would give away for Free when you sent in the reply card for thier Nes games? I used to have a Contra and a Castlevania poster and I would not mind getting those again but I think it's next to impossible to find one let alone in mint shape since I think most people never sent away for it anyway. In case you were wondering what they look like they were the exact same game art as the ones featured on the nes labels of the same games.

Thanks

Buy Atari bought several off ebay not too long ago IIRC. They look really cool, and I too would love to have a set for my game room. But you're right they are hard to find. But they do pop up on ebay ever so often like this Rush n' Attack. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1576229209) That seller also had a couple Stinger's on that did not sell.

Oh and in regards to the poll, I say go for it! Laminated posters are cool. And unless it's like some ultra rare, you're not really going to hurt any value. I might would think twice before I laminated all my RPG maps though. :p

I would just get a few poster frames that way the posters are not ruined. I also find them cheap at Hobby Lobby. Anyways where's my free porn?

Lamination essentially destroys the item. There's no way to get the poster "out" of the lamination so it would make the posters worthless. I used to work at a copy shop that did lamination and we couldn't laminate licenses, social security cards, etc for this reason. And we would advise people against it for old photographs, documents, etc. I would get some frames if I were you.

That said, laminated stuff does look cool :)

Laminate them. So you can't "take them out" of the lamination, Why the hell would you want to? To smell it? Taste it?

I've got a couple of Twin Galaxie posters mounted on that board like stuff and I have to admit I like it. It was a gift so I didn't have a choice but if I did I think I'd go the same route. Makes it easy to mount on the wall and actually appreciate. I long ago decided that I don't collect anything for value though. If it has value that's a bonus but I'm all about enjoying what I collect.

Thanks for your input guys/gals. The foam mount options sounds intriguing, and I think I can get one of my friends in the art program at the university to hook me up with free materials too, so I might give that a try.

After mulling over it, I decided that I might as well preserve & mount them. I don't plan to sell them at anytime, so what does monetary value mean anyways? Nothing. So heck with it. They'll last longer this way, and have less chance of fading (with UV coating). My game room is going to look sweet!!
