Now that I've had a taste of a horse racing game through Sega's Owners Club Derby at my local Dave and Busters, I was surprised at how much fun that it was and it got me looking into what other horse sim games have been released in the States.

So far there seems to be three options:

GI Jockey 3 by Koei -- the reviews rank the game the highest of all the horse sim but you only play as a jockey. The game is in the $30's for the used price. PS2 game.

Gallop Racer seires by Tecmo -- the reviews say this game is'nt quite as good as GI Jockey, but that that you can play all aspects of the industry, from jockey to owner and the like. But the game is still around $50. On the OTHER hand, Gallop Racer 2004, the new one, should be out at the end of the month. PS2 game.

Horse Illustrated Championship Season by Activison. This one is for the PC. Sounds interesting, mostly focusing on riding and taking care of your horse. $20 used.

Final Stretch-Horse Racing Sim by Global Star Software. Also for the PC. Sounds similar to Gallop Racer, except it has even MORE stuff in it. And only $8.

So, has anyone played any of these games and can suggest one? Or stay away from one?

There's also Equestrian Showcase for the PSX but it's not exactly horse racing though.

I'm listening. Is it that or Gallop Racer that is the one where you breed your stable and then race them? And is E.S. an import? I haven't heard of that one.

Don't forget Horsreracing from Intellivision, which is also featured on the Intellivision Lives compilation.

I think GR is the one where you breed and race them. Equestrian Showcase has you jumping over fences and stuff, and it was one of those $9.99 late-release titles (came out around the same time as Turnabout, Puzznic, Sorcerer's Maze, Creatures, etc.). Go check Gamestop or EB Games, they're not that hard to find. :)

I'm unfamiliar with the PC games, but on the consoles, I'd go with Gallop Racer 2004 (which I recently reviewed for PSE2) over G1 Jockey 3. The latter is more realistic, but the former is more fun.

Hey ZM, what kind of review did you give GR 2004? I've had my copy on pre-order for a while now and I can't wait to get it. I really want to see how it compares to GR 2003.

I've never played G1 Jockey yet (can't even find a frickin' copy of it), but I hear GR is the way to go. It has an insanely intense cult following here in the States. There are even "online" GR racing leagues where competitors email race hosts with their horse save data via a Sharkport and have them all race against each other.

The major improvements in '04:

* Easier to determine your horse's "mood" via the horse-face icon in the lower-left corner.

* Easier to adjust the horse's speed.

* A more detailed post-race breakdown of what you did right and wrong.

* A more detailed tutorial mode.

* A deeper career mode. You start as a jockey for other breeders and owners before earning enough cizzash to start your own stable.

* Rivalries with other jockeys (a little G1 Jockey 3-style soap opera).

* Bred horses can be raced right away, and don't have to be raised from foals.

* Slightly better graphics.

* More tracks and a couple new multiplayer modes.

I really liked '03, which I became obsessed with after reading "Seabiscuit," and I'm digging '04 even more. Translated from PSE2's goofy 1-100%/five-medal scoring system, I gave it 4/5.

Yup, I'll go to the local EB tommorow and pre-order that one. :) Thanks, guys.

So in GI Jockey 3 it just focuses on being a racer?

I ordered the Horse Sim game for the PC also since it was only $10.
