Ok with the holidays coming up there are a few Swap places open now on week-days well just a few hours ago I went to one and I came across this Disc Drive by Atari Said to be used with the atari 800 ? Well I looked at it and the box itself is scuffed up but the Drive itself is in flawless condition and brand new. The vendor did not really have a clue to what it was but said his son had it in a garage for many many years and it was just never used. It has a retail price on the box of 549.99 wow talk about steep. But anyway I offered the guy 10 bucks for this just because I thought it was interesting since I have never seen anything like this. Does any one know anything about this ????

it's just a 810 floppy for an 8bit Atari computer.. you got a good deal if it works.. The Atari 810 disk drive was the original drive introduced for use with the Atari 400 and 800 computers. It is a full-height, single sided, single density drive and capable of holding 90k. It plugs directly to the I/O bus of the computer, and requires no seperate controller and a number of them can be daisy chained together.
The 'Happy' upgrade for these drives comprised of single chip added to the drive, and software run during the boot-up of the Atari 8bit machine. It dramatically improved the speed of the drive, raising the transfer rate to 52k vice the standard 19.2k, as well as allowed the drive to copy nearly any 810-format diskette. The software for the upgrade went through many revisions during it's production. Needless to say, this product was a favorite for copying commercial software, which often used on-disk copy protection.
Atari 810 --- a 5.25" floppy disk drive
The least common denominator for the Atari. One mode of operation:
1) Single-Sided, Single-Density--
FM 40 tracks x 18 sectors/track x 128 byte/sector = 90K capacity
19.2Kbps transfer rate. 288RPM.
The 810 includes a 6507 microprocessor.
Shipped with DOS 1 (very early) or DOS 2.0S
earlier MPI version- push button door opening for disk access
later Tandon version- lift door, like a garage door disk access
two SIO ports
accessories from Atari:
CX8100 Atari 810 Blank Diskettes (5 per box)
CX8111 Atari 810 Formatted Diskettes II (5 per box)
CX8202 Atari 810/815 Blank Diskettes (5 per box, certified for double density)

Im guessing it still works since everything is sealed, but more then likely Ill just trow it up on ebay Unless someone here wants it.
Do you happen to know the going rate for one of these and thanks for all the info.
Thanks

If you want to sell it I'd take it to Atariage.com.. I'm almost positive someone will make you an offer.. The resident Atari geek, R. Riot hasn't been around much lately.
