What DC games came with the Green HOT! NEW! starburst on the cover? And if possible, what is the disc art variation?

This is what I know of, can you help fill in the blanks and point out any missing titles?

Ready 2 Rumble Boxing
Variation: Red disc instead of Yellow

Mortal Kombat Gold
Variation:Red disc instead of.....

NFL Blitz 2000
Variation: Red disc instead of....

Hydro Thunder
Variation: Red disc instead of Blue

4 Wheel Thunder (unconfirmed)
Variation: ???

I have the Mortal Kombat Gold...what do you need to know? If someone can post a pic of what the disc looks like for the original I can compare them.

So far, the disc art has been the same, just a different color. I don't have a picture, but I know someone here should (Achika? Perkar?)

Can any one confirm 4 Wheel Thunder?

There are only four AFAIK:

Hydro Thunder
Mortal Kombat Gold
NFL Blitz 2000
Ready 2 Rumble Boxing

Many of the original run of Midway's Dreamcast launch games were defective. The "Hot New" logo was used to distinguish the second run from the defective first run games.

I have the following:

Hydro Thunder HOT NEW - Faint Red Disk
Mortal Kombat ORIGINAL - Red Disk
NFL Blitz HOT NEW - Red Disk
Ready 2 Rumble Boxing ORIGINAL - Yellow Disk

I didn't know that. I always thought it was some cheesy advertisement. Thanks for the heads up :)

can't help with the MK, one of the less than 40 games i still need.... but from what i understand (could be wrong), the defective nature of the games was something with the sound... it would crackle for no apparent reason. not really noticable unless you have it cranked up.

I have both versions of NFL Blitz, one is red, one is blue, but I can't be 100% that they are in their original box as opposed to switched.

Also i was under the impression that there was a Sonic Adventure hot!new! version...well, I remember never getting the game to work right and replacing ti three times until i heard there were misprints and such...maybe they didn't bother putting the label on it.

I think Sonic Adventure was also Hot new. I know I replaced mine a few times and so did my friend until we got working ones.

I have yet to see a Sonic hot new so I really dont think it was a launch title that had these problems.

As for the Original MK Gold disc its is an ugly mustard looking color, I may be slightly off due to my color blindness. And it has Kung Lao Kitana and Bakara, in order from left to right.

Sonic Adventure was definnitely NOT a "hot, new" title... as someone already said, the "hot, new" titles are Midway launch titles only....

This is off topic, but I HATE it so much when I buy a new copy of a DC game on ebay, and the title they are selling has NO "HOT NEW" sticker on there, but when I receive the item it DOES have the "HOT NEW" on it. I DO NOT want the Hot New versions, and it really pisses me off cause that wasn't what was in the picture.

I remember seeing "Hot New" on Sonic Adventure also, and avoiding it until the Sega All Stars version came out, which works perfectly. Now doesn't it make you wonder why so many of us here remember seeing it with one of those green "Hot New" stickers on it, if it was never sold with one on it? :hmm:

Hmmm are you sure?

Only Midway games branded the Hot New insignia.

In the 50 or so copies of Sonic Adventure that have passed through my hands, I have never seen a "Hot! New!" one. I'd be willing to change my mind if anyone has a scan, but I agree that these were only for the Midway releases, as I believe Sega and Midway said so when they made them to replace the non-working first batch.

It is interesting to note that NFL Blitz 2000 is the only Dreamcast game to get a standard release, Hot! New! release and All*Stars release.

Okay, in my search for some of these games, I turned up something interesting today...

I found a copy of Mortal Kombat Gold at a store, an it was the Hot! New! version, but it wasn't on the insert... it was just a sticker added to it. I didn't get it because the sticker was about 3/4ths peeled off, but it was interesting to see it there...

Were all Mortal Kombat Gold copies stickers, or were some printed that way?

I didn't buy it, so I don't know. It was used, and didn't have the disc in it.

HMM... Maybe that's how some of us saw "HOT NEW" on Sonic Adventure. Perhaps for some reason some people just peeled off those stickers and put them on Sonic Adventure as some kind of joke. But I know that I saw that game with "HOT NEW" on it before, because I thought it was totally stupid. I was like yeah right, Sonic Adventure is so HOT and so NEW. Perhaps that was the point of the prank? I really don't know, but I wish I did have a scan.

Your memory is flawed. And I believe that the Midway "HOT NEW" was printed on the package, not just a sticker.

I am 110% sure that Sonic Adventure didn't have the same problem.

Yeah, it ain't always a removable sticker folks. Isn't it on the manual/insert sometimes?

Actually, there were also stickers weren't there? If Dan says so there must have been.....

I can't remember, I don't have any Midway releases at all among the 70 or so DC games I have. I do remember they are unremovable.

I think my friend has (at least nearly) all of 'em though. He must have like 150 DC games by now.....

They were on the manual right? I guarantee they weren't removable. My friend and I used to think it was hilarious. Neither of us noticed the launch difference thing. I knew there were defectives but didn't associate it with the hot! new! thing.

Always thought it was a really stupid advertisement. Not like Midway wouldn't do that. I like a number of their games, but they aren't exactly highbrow these days. LOL

And Ready 2 Rumble

Hydro Thunder also had all three didn't it?

Also, there were non Midway launch titles that were defective. Blue Stinger for instance.

And I believe that the Midway "HOT NEW" was printed on the package, not just a sticker.

As far as I can tell, it was printed on the packaging for the other three, but Mortal Kombat Gold only came with it on as a sticker. My version (one of the only "Hot New" titles I don't have both versions of) doesn't have a sticker, but came with the "new" disc. Here are some eBay auctions for comparison:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=62053&item=8182011609&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=62053&item=8181203318&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=62053&item=8182263799&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

If you load them all up and look at the placement of the "Hot! New!" branding, you'll see that all four of them are in different locations. If these were printed, tha wouldn't have happened. Also, if you look through completed auctions, you'll see more pictures where the Hot! New! brand has moved around. In fact, there isn't two that I can see that line up, making me feel like they were printed.

Yeah, it ain't always a removable sticker folks. Isn't it on the manual/insert sometimes?

On the other three, yes. For Mortal Kombat Gold, I think it may have only been a sticker since I've never seen it branded on it. I'd like to see if anyone has a copy with Hot! New! on it that isn't a sticker.

Hydro Thunder also had all three didn't it?

:embarrassed: Geez. I need to think about my collection before I open my big mouth next time. Yeah. I guess only Mortal Kombat Gold doesn't get the three versions (and may not even get two!)

Also, there were non Midway launch titles that were defective. Blue Stinger for instance.

Yes, but packaging wasn't changed on them to reflect this.

To update the original list with all the information gathered so far...

Ready 2 Rumble Boxing
Variation: Hot New had a red disc instead of yellow disc

Mortal Kombat Gold - All (?) Hot New games were stickered on the manual and sealed, but it was not printed on them.
Variation: Hot New had a red disc instead of yellow disc

NFL Blitz 2000
Variation: Hot New had a red disc instead of blue disc

Hydro Thunder
Variation: Hot New had a red disc instead of blue disc

After Kaine's comments, for further proof on the Hydro Thunder front, I again refer you to eBay where there are three pictured Hot! New! titles, all of which have vastly different placement of the actual "branding.":

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=62053&item=8177288646&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=62053&item=8180593834&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=62053&item=8181437343&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

And I can personally confirm that both Ready 2 Rumble and NFL Blitz 2000 were printed on the cases. I have new, sealed copies of both where it is most definitely printed.

And Gemini, for pictures just check my eBay links. I've been going through these because I'm looking to get all the major case variations that came out in the US. I'm just a few dumb All Star series games, as well as the two stickered Hot! New! releases away. I have already the tough ones -- Marvel Vs. Capcom and Power Stone :D

New update - *I* have a Hot! New! Hydro Thunder that is not a sticker. The logo is in the upper-most corner (this one -- http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=62053&item=8181437343&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW )

Does that mean there are three variations of all of them? Stickered, regular and non Hot! New! ?

Researching some DC stuff tonight :D More posts coming ;)

On a related note, what was the reason that a second print run was done by Midway like this for some Dreamcast games? Was it due to a 'slight manfacturing error' that is mentioned in Kent's book? What was that error?

It was indeed due to a manufacturing error.

There was a scan of one of the mis-printed discs placed on IGN's Dreamcast site a few days after the Dreamcast launch. I can't seem to find it, though. I think it may have been in the Q&A section.

It showed a rather large V-shaped zag in the outer ring of data on the disc.

I thought that it specifically had to do with a bug that was related to saving the games onto a VMU? I have a couple of the non-Hot! New! discs and if I recall correctly, that was the only problem because I've played them without saving and they have at least appeared to function just fine.

SoulBlazer

See, that's why I'm asking. :) Kent's book only makes a reference to a 'slight manfacturing error' (the exact quote) that caused Midway to re-print all of their early release Dreamcast games, but I've read in a couple websites the error had to do with the sound skipping during the game.

Tom61

My Mortal Kombat Gold non-'Hot New!' disc is a greenish yellow. If I remember right, this version of MK Gold has troubles with sound skipping if you select one of the hidden characters. I don't see in V-shaped patern on the disc itself. Perhaps it's a fluke that all the early Midway games have bugs, but not necessarily the same ones.

No easy access to a camera right now to take pics though, and I don't really feel like playing it.

Does ANYONE hae a confirmation on the Mortal Kombat Gold sticker ever being printed on the case? I can't find any times where that is the case.

Also, I was looking more carefully at my sealed copy of NFL Blitz, and it so happens that mine is a sticker underneath it all. Can anyone confirm this game had the printed Hot! New! on it too?

I swear, this is the damn hardest subset to collect of any system, just because it is so obscure, those darn stickers are nearly impossible to tell in pictures and everyone on eBay is now using stock photos... Any help is greatly appreciated.

In all my years of DC collecting, I never actually looked at the hot new thing closely enough to tell that it was a sticker. Unfortunately, most of my cases are in boxes (no display room), but I checked a copy of Blitz that I have up for sale and it is a sticker - not printed on.

This is very interesting, I'll keep my eyes open in the future.

Every one of the Hot! New! titles came with the stickers at one point or another. I have confirmed that HydroThunder and Ready 2 Rumble actually had the Hot! New! logo printed on the manual, but I haven't confirmed the other two. There are copies of HydroThunder and Ready 2 Rumble that have the Hot! New! stickers also. The stickers were sealed into the cases on the manuals.
