Hey all,

I recently bought a 32X and a Sega CD. Well, I haven't had much chance to play with it but last night I fired it up for some Shadow Squadron. I noticed as I was playing that is was making a high pitched whining sound. I turned it off and put in a CD game (Cliffhanger) and played it for a bit. While playing a Sega CD game, the whine did not happen. Also, playing a Genesis game without the 32x connected does not whine.

What is causing this? Is this something I need to be concerned about?

Thanks,
James

It must be because you didn't use the metal clips!! RF Interference! AHHHH!!

DUN da DUN DUN!

Seriously, I have no clue.

Sadly, I did throw out the metal clips accidently. I bought the 32x at a garage sale and the clips were in the box but there was no instructions or anything. Anyways, I got everything together and I didn't see a use for the clips, so I set them aside for a few weeks in case they were part of the system but eventually decided they musrt have just been some junk the guy had that ended up in the box and threw them out. A few days later I found a link (here I believe) to a site about hooking up the 32x that told me what those were.

Anyways, its a soft whine that isn't that noticable when the game is making sounds and it seems to be working OK, so I'm guessing it may not be something I need to worry about.

Well, clean everything. Check the cables seating, and maybe clean the cable sockets a bit.

might help!

Is the sound louder when the picture is bright (has a lot of white)?

My 32X makes a similar sound. But only when you put your ear really close to it.

I think it's just a 'thing they do', and some may just be louder than others.

Generally any electronic device with a high pitched sound has it's sound coming form the transformer inside. I think on many TVs (usually older ones), it's something like 15000hertz (roughly a B flat?), which most can't hear and I only hear occasionally on some TVs. However, I can't say I've had many game systems do that, since the transformer is usually located in the power plug...On a 32x? No clue...

Not that this will help you at all, but some people's hearing is better than others. I play multiple instruments, so my hearing range has been greatly enhanced due to it. As was said earlier about the TV's... I can walk into a room with a TV 15 ft away and tell you if it's on or not. And that is when it's on and it's switched to A/V IN making no sound or picture whatsoever. So you just may be hearing what some people can't here. And yes, I was a band dork in HS, though i just graduated. Too bad my major is in music too though...haha LOL

a sega 32x drains its power from the internal power pins so it dont have any transformer parts that can cause high pitch sounds. and for the record when it comes to tv's 2 things cause the pitch sound the XXXXL coil due to vibrations and / or the Flyback tranformer (big black thingie with a red cable to the tube) or rather the Steel wire thats strapped to it you can eliminate the sound by using hot meltglue on the bottom of the coil and alongside the steelwire on the flyback tranformer (yes all the way even along the wall of the transformer itself)
