Anyone else notice that the retro section in Play has already quietly came and went? Wonder why?

The magazine is trying to survive. I am very sure Halverson doesn't want PLAY to go the way of Gamers Republic. The magazine has changed very much since it first started. The Girls of Gaming thing is pretty pathetic for a magazine that wants to appeal to the serious adult demographic. I think PLAY is the best mainstream mag around though. That doesn't mean it's that good though either. All the mainstream mags out there suck, PLAY just sucks a little less. It's too bad really.

I noticed that, too, Manci.

For the record, play happens to be my favorite gaming magazine, and I read them all. I don't consider them "mainstream" at all. I love that they put obscure or lesser-known games on their cover.

They certainly arent an underground magazine by any standard. I have all of their issues and have not seen one Obsure title on the cover. I've seen PLAY sold in Gamestop and Suncoast Video. That makes them mainstream to me. At least as far as gaming mags go

As far as "obscure" titles:

Primal
Advent Rising
Malice
Ghosthunter

.... to name a few. I haven't seen these on other mags' covers. But to each his own. Reading preferences vary greatly. That's why there's so much out there to chose from.

I would hardly classify any of the titles as being "obscure." Just because they didn't get to star on the covers of other mags doesn't mean they are "obscure." Maybe they are destined to become obscure, but not now.

I consider "obscure" and "lesser-known" to be somewhat interchangeable. After all, the lesser-known titles wind up being obscure eventually. As an example, we did a little news story on our site (www.dpadjunkies.com (http://www.dpadjunkies.com)) and most people had not even heard of Ghosthunter until we posted its release info on our site. We're doing our part to spread the word on little gems such as these that will eventually be either hard to find, or will drop in price so quickly they will disappear and have made no money for their publisher and developer. That's a shame, too, because Cambridge Studios (developer of Ghosthunter) has made decent games in the past.

Still, I respect your opinion of play. We all have different tastes. :)

I am curious, though... what is your favorite gaming magazine?

Favorite current magazine? As in still in production? I prefer PLAY. Favorite magazine of all time? Gamefan.
