hi!

i have this weird problem with my sega cd. it's a cd model 2 on a genny model 1.

sometimes the cd reads everything perfectly (cd's, cd-r's), sometimes it doesn't read cd-r's and sometimes it just stops reading even original cd's. then after about a week or so, it starts reading them again, but can also wreck again.

is there a way to get around it?

You could try and tweak the laser pot. It's best to do it with a meter, to minimize the risk of making it totally broken, as opposed to partially broken. LOL

i've been meaning to do that, but i'm kinda afraid.

mainly 2 reasons:
1. i don't see too many scd's round here.
2. they are very high priced or given away as thrash (2$)

so uhm, that about it. i may try it though, i have nothing to loose. it stopped reading again today, so i might just do it.

Decrease the resistance, in small small SMALL increments, and test each time, with originals and backups. test with cutscenes. Take your time. It will likely work.

ok, you just gave me the guts to go and do it.

sorry for the double post:

i opened me sega cd, so that i could move the pots. so i then just put the dracula cd (original) and it read it no problems.

then i tried with a cd'r, one containing sonic cd, wich almost never works, also did.

then i tried with a badly damaged sewer shark, original, and it worked.
then with shining force cd (cd-r, badly taken care of) and it also worked.

i'm gonna wait for it to start acting up again so i can then move the pot.

If you have a meter, measure it's current setting, and write it down. :)
