Dude, I was standind next to you when you were asking them about it!!!

Oh thank god! I really thought I'd maybe forgotten to ask about docs specifically, since "complete" means different things to different people.

I now feel much better & justified. I will proceed forth and get me a damn refund this weekend. (Glad I made them write me a reciept)

Ya we met everyone, tried to help when i could, and Katchoo was not bored to tears as i thought she might be. Everyone was cool as beans. For my first CGE I'd have to say nothing was disapointing...well waking up hungover(why does everyone think i'm a lush?) and missing WOZ. Janice is actually better looking in person and i think she fit in perfectly with the entire deal. I didn't get to figureout who everyone was, i guess i have to take a look at older pictures. All and all i will be there again.

About 4Jays, I think their stuff is quite overpriced. They wanted $25 for Castle Of Illusion for the SMS, and it didn't even have the instructions. They even wanted the same for Gain Ground (again, for the SMS), when you can get that game much more cheaper off of eBay.

May I remind you that CGE is not eBay. That may seem rather simple, but you can get things for wildly variable prices on eBay, sometimes more, sometimes less, and you take the chance of the mail and you pay shipping. If you think you can get it for less, vote with your wallet.

Just because you saw something in person, doesn't mean it will always be priced in accordance with what you'd pay. It's a bad feeling, I know, but you'll get used to it. Year after year I've contended with that feeling at CGE and it no longer bothers me. The permanent vendors seem to have that upward price drift tendency. And when you really really want a particular item that you saw them with, at least you know it will still be there when you go calling. ;)

I guess two things can happen to them: they go out of business, or they lower their prices. Neither may ever happen if they have a good idea of what their market will tolerate. It's weird, huh? Who would think that the higher priced vendors would survive? Well, apparently lots of people must cherish the dependability of a long standing business and the support that they presume that they will get from them. As well, something has to be said for the constant availability that they provide. I appreciate even the high priced vendors- if they can stay in business selling classic games, all the power to them. It isn't that easy to do.

I missed Telegames at this show, but I must admit, they are weird. I never understood their business model. If they can stay in business, there must be something to high prices...

I have to agree, Chunky and Katchoo are awesome. As are the dozens and dozens of other people I met. To think of all that I missed out on by never going to CGE before....but at least this year (as the dry-erase board in the party room said) YASHIRO WAS HERE.

I didn't buy anything from them, but I would like to take a trip over to their store in antioch.

The store is weird. It's not very big. I liked checking it out, but only because I worked over there a bit. They were kind pissed when I showed up at 5 to 6pm, when they close.

If you plan to head out there, make an appointment to hit up their storage space- that might make it worthwhile. And don't head during commuting hours, unless it's reverse timing. The traffic is awful. I think they would only show you the storage on a Sunday or something anyway.

I like the 4Jays guy, although many of their prices are a little rich for my blood. I think you could find some bizzare cool item or two if you went through their stuff carefully.

Yes I did- I had to drag myself away before I bought Magical Chase.

I was wondering who bought that... I was tempted, although I decided to buy the Color Bar Generator cart instead to round out my 2600 collection to very very few carts... I know I'll need that Magical Chase one day soon! I am a little bummed that I didn't pick up the copy of Air Zonk in the trade affair- although it was no deal considering the guy had it priced at the DP book level, which may still be a good price.

Just got back, great time...great people. Surprisingly NO hangover sunday.

Pleasure meeting everyone. I'll have more to say and a bunch of pictures in a couple of days.

Also nailed some NES games off my list and brought that down to 5 . Awesome part was that I didn't spend more than $8 on a cart except for Cheetahmen II (from the auction).

Good day and goodnight..

on the other foot, I'd love to rattle off names of the awesomaness of people that i met before or just met, they all rock, i can't name start naming, cuz i might forget. I tried to talk to a few of you reserved quiet ones, but hey your all ok in my book.

Just got back a couple of hours ago, and I had a lot of fun too. It was great to meet up with people who share a passion for the hobby. I especially want to thank TrickyX, Y-Bot, and Billy Galaxy for their taxi service and friendship! I also met a BSd with a lot of nice folks.

My best find was a CIB NES Stackup for $40. I also found SNES ChronoTrigger and EarthBound real cheap :).

I must have paid for half my trip by selling the Atari 2600 rares I had at the swap meet - thanks to all that bought them. I think they were pretty good deals.

I have to say I did prefer the show being in Las Vegas. I wasn't too impressed with the things to do in San Jose outside of the show and the area was pretty expensive with few video game hunting opportunities. I was also kinda let down by Woz - to me he seemed to come off a bit arrogant, but I guess what the heck the guy is a multimillionare, a father of the industry, and has a street named after him. With that said I definately enjoyed Nolan Bushnell (previous year) and Al Alcorn much more.

It was also good to get my nephew NovaMaster0 out and about on his first vacation away from his parents. He had a blast and we're both looking forward to next year's CGE.

Take care everyone, and game on... :)

I agree! I spent more time and bought more stuff at the swap then I spent in the main hall. I rented my own table on saturday and had a blast selling some of my stuff.

ya man, no kidding. On sunday i was living it up in the swap hall. lemme tell you, Kevin "tsr" Gifford had the steals of the century on NES stuff.

I also have to thank you tntplust for buying a pile of my NES games, you helped fund my trip.

No problem my NES collection doubled overnight because of you! LOL

Also, was the rivetchick one of the DPers, or just someone who came in from local? Just curious, b/c she looks like most of my friends (who I don't look like at all).

Thats because you went to bed so early :P

As for the talk about the high priced stuff...I was saying the same exact things at the show, but I guess I've changed my tune. Sure a majority of the stuff was kinda high, but there were plenty of deals to be had (or I wouldn't have spent every last cent of my money). I think the biggest problem was (especially with the NES games at Atari2600 booth) everything was gone so quick. All of the real steals and good deals were picked through maybe 30 minutes into the show. Luckily I got a few of them. I still think the other games that just sat there should have been a bit lower, but most of them just needed a few bucks knocked off...maybe I should have haggled them (though then I would be in debt).

yes, there were definately deals to be found at cge. dk jr math cib for 20 bucks at the overpriced atari2600 booth, ya can't go wrong with that.

I still hate you  LOL

Oh, and BTW Marty, when I see you at Super Actions you'd wish you never won those Messiah raffles.

Why?

San Jose is soooooo niiiiiice, and the convention hall is huge. Plenty of room to grow, and with more people attending each year it seems, I see no reason as to why that's a bad thing.

Yep, it was me with the rare Atari games (Tooth Protectors, Crazy Climber, Master Builder, ...) at the swap meet. It was kinda sad to see them go, but the 2600 isn't a system I play / collect for a lot. I sold them at relatively cheap prices and it was cool to see people who have a passion for the 2600 get a hold of them. Either that or I'm stupid. (No rude remarks please :) )

I picked up the CIB NES Stackup from Atari 2600.com. I overpaid on some other items from them, but I still made out like a bandit snagging it for $40. I never thought I'd get a hold of one and it's in better shape than the one that was in the museum. The NES is my prime system and I have just seven games to go. It'll probably take the rest of my life to get them considering some of the prices.

There are plenty of convention centers in LV. Practically every casino has one. There is even a Las Vegas Convention Center. I don't believe the reason to keep it in SJ is that the convention center is huge. I think you might be prejudging having it back in Vegas based upon the past CGE's at the Plaza.

Bottom line is that LV has much to offer outside of the convention. It is also more affordable for those of use who don't live in California.

Well there are things to do in SJ, just since the city is so big and life of the city doesnt focus on Downtown, there is some traveling that is required.

I had such a great time this last weekend, meeting everyone, hanging out, and just getting to meet the people that I see post here on a daily basis.

Joe, count me in for next year, and as before, any help that I can give is all yours.

The thing that I'll always remember is this year's CGE first.

Jerry Lawson (Fairchild F) was the last keynote of the show. I was introducing him. Unfortunately, Jerry is now in a wheelchair. Before his keynote I asked him if he wanted to talk from the floor, or if he wanted to talk from the stage thinking that I'd get some people to help lift him and his wheelchair up the two steps. Jerry said he'd talk from the stage and that he'd be able to get up there himself.

He stood and grabbed hold of something so he could climb the stairs. I grabbed his hand and helped him up the two steps and into his chair. And just as he sat down in the chair to begin the speech, the CGE first occurred. The fire alarm went off and we had to evacuate the building. I felt so sorry for Jerry who upon his return, was only able to talk for a half hour when he clearly needed (and deserved) more time.

Fine, but no need to cop an attitude about it. This is a forum and I was just posting my opinion on it, which I am clearly entitled to do. Besides, what is wrong with voicing my opinion, and why do I need to get over anything? I would think as a moderator on this board you would act accordingly. I hate it when people say that something is not directed at someone then proceed to lambast that very same person.

For the record, I never got involved in any discussions last year, nor do I believe it was ever open to debate. As I recall, the decision to change the venue was made by the powers that be. The reason why I even brought it up was that the post "the good, the bad and the ugly" it seemed there were complaints about San Jose as a venue with respect to things to do after the convention.

The show wasn't moved to SJ for convenience or lower costs- it was moved for two more important reasons (off the top of my non-show planning head):

Proximity to the focal point of classic gaming

and

Possibility of locally expanding the show. The bay area in general will be more receptive to this kind of tech oriented/appreciating convention. LV just isn't known as Silicon Valley.

Now I think I saw fewer Easterners than in Vegas, or folks from other places, but I think that's sort of arbitrary. It doesn't cost THAT much more to get to SJ or the bay area, and the hotel didn't cost that much more- it was also SUPER nice- the plaza is a dump. Anyway, it would be cool for it to be central in the US, but I think that having it so close to the origins of so much of the US videogame industry is just an evolutionary step in the right direction. Most of the folks involved stayed in the region- it's really hard to leave, and most of them probably bought houses before the prices went out of this world (I'm jealous- and aren't we all a little jealous of the way things were in 1978-1981 in the area with Atari and Apple and all the others?)

I know that there is just no serious need to respond to these concerns, but I just feel like moving it to SJ is such a positive move for the future of the show, I had to.

I am a little bummed that I didn't pick up the copy of Air Zonk in the trade affair- although it was no deal considering the guy had it priced at the DP book level, which may still be a good price.

Yeah, the new DP prices for AZ are pretty accurate. I'd say they're on the low to average in general...you won't be getting screwed getting it at that price!

Yes I did- I had to drag myself away before I bought Magical Chase.

Was I the guy with the Air Zonk? I think $25 for it was pretty damn good :)

And the Magical Chase went to a collector that we'll probably never see on the forums. He seems to be hardcore and not into the on-line community thing. Chances of seeing another boxed Magical Chase are far and few between!

And I think Nate did a damn good job with the prices in the Turbo section this pass. Usually I can't stand price guides for such a broad number of games.

The fire alarm went off and we had to evacuate the building. I felt so sorry for Jerry who upon his return, was only able to talk for a half hour when he clearly needed (and deserved) more time.

It's definately a shame that fire alarm went off when it did -- Jerry Lawson's speech was really entertaining and I learned a lot about the fairchild console. He's a great speaker and told some good stories. Hope he can make it next year and get the real time he deserves.

That would be Achika. She is indeed quite the tattoo aficionado.

While I'm at it, I might as well post a screen name-enhanced version of the pic I whipped up. I shrunk it down a bit and added names to ALMOST everyone...

I totally forgot about the group picture. I think lots of other people did too since there were way more people with DP badges than in the picture. I had so much fun. Way more than I expected. I met a lot of people and didn't meet some people I thought I would. I sold tons of stuff in the swap meet room and bought a few things. My biggest purchase was an empty box for Atari 5200 Bounty Bob Strikes Back for $100. Turns out it is really a Commodore 64 disk that they just used the same box for. I'm not sure what I think about that. It has the correct manual/poster with a sticker stuck on it with C64 directions that will probably never come off. I can't decide if it is a bonus that there is a C64 disk game in there or if I got screwed and the C64 version is easy to find in the box. I even made a few trades which seemed to be few and far between. I would have loved to trade more but there really wasn't that much stuff there that I really wanted bad. I'm kicking myself for not buying the loose Bounty Bob Strikes back on Saturday and I missed out on a great deal on a boxed Super Cassette Vision with games for $40. I didn't see it until Dojosky (I hope I spelled that right) was carrying it around. My best buy was a Famicom clone (an old one that looks just like an original but says "Video Game" instead of "Family Computer" and it has A/V output), Famicom Disk System, 50 or so copied disks, a boxed Colecovision, and INTV DIner complete for $80. I also bought a pile of crappy NES games (tsr's leftovers) for $30 and a bunch of Nintendo manuals (Famicom, FDS, & NES) for $15. Next time I think my friend and I are going to try and get a table. I was amazed at how much stuff I sold and I could have brought a lot more. It was great to meet some of you and thanks to the people who came to our party. Also thanks to the people who threw the DP party it was entertaining to see some really drunk people. I would have been one of them but I didn't feel so hot so I took it easy.

I totally forgot about the group picture.

I missed the pic too.

I was jacked to meet you and Billy at the show. I can't believe we haven't met before, considering all the trades and chatter we've had. I look forward to visiting Portland and checking out Billy's shop and shopping with you guys. Or dumpster diving.

I was pretty happy to pick up alot of cool stuff, but it's just not all about the product for me anymore. I met so many DPers (although I am worst at keeping them straight- if I can get 2 more folks ingrained in the brain (Nick, I think you're one of them) each year, it's a step in the eventual direction.

What's the deal with the BBSB 5200 box? Was we rooked? Were the boxes reused? They did have a 5200 sticker on them, yes? It certainly is possible that the company resused the same box for the release on multiple platforms.

I hope so, especially after 2 years and 5 G&W sales. ;)

I can fill in the three missing ones. The guy on the far right is "purenergy". The guy leaning over near the middle is "fahrvegnugen" and the guy on the far right is "lifebringeroftorv".

I'll get this photo onto our member page soon - got a few other tasks to complete ahead of that. Thanks for the titling!

Meanwhile back in Vegas...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/ubikuberalles/photos%20for%20dp%20site/vegas02.jpg
I drove to San Jose and it's over a 1,000 mile trip. On the way back I spent the night in Vegas. For old times sake, I got a room at the Plaza. For the heck of it I walked by the ballroom where previous CGEs were held:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/ubikuberalles/photos%20for%20dp%20site/vegas08.jpg
Kinda of spooky to walk past it, as a matter of fact. The ghosts of CGE past kept calling to me (no doubt asking me why there was no CGE in Vegas this year). I felt a little claustrophobic walking around the old ballroom. This years CGE was so much bigger. AND classier. Look how old and dingy the old place looks in comparison to the SJCC.

But, At least I had these guys to look at on Fremont street:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/ubikuberalles/photos%20for%20dp%20site/vegas12.jpg
(And no, I don't know who the woman in black is).

I wasn't keen on CGE moving to San Jose because of the extra distance involved. Now that I've been to CGE at San Jose, I must say that it has become a much better show. Not only better facilities but a better setup and better guests. CGE was an anachronism in Vegas. Sure there's gaming in Vegas but it's a different kind of gaming. Many of the potential walk-ins at CGE last year probably didn't bother because it didn't involve gambling.

Next year, I'm flying to CGE. Driving there actually cost me more money than flying. It wasn't the gas that made it expensive but the cost of hotel rooms for the extra two nights and the cost of parking at the Marriott.

If having CGE in California means having a better show, then I'm all for it.

It's almost surreal that you wrote this. I hope John gets to see it.

When we stopped back in Vegas in May (we stopped by to transport our museum stuff from our storage there to display at our exhibit at E3 in Los Angeles), we thought pretty much the same thing. Walking along that concourse in front of the ballroom entrance, we could actually "see" the line out front, the people bustling in and out, the smokers organizing their bags collected from the show... "ghosts" exactly the term we used as we stood there.

We actually did enjoy our years with The Plaza and if Las Vegas WASN'T a great place we wouldn't have done the show there for six years. It was simply time to move on. Anyone who has been to both CGE locations now should clearly see the reasons for doing it. We may not have filled the San Jose Convention Center, but our objective in 2004 was to maintain our numbers (attendees and exhibitors) through the move. 2005 is going to be a much... bigger story.
