Nintendo announced yesterday that they will launch in May the Game Boy Player, which is basically the Super Game Boy for the GCN. It is a flat device that will slide underneath the Gamecube and connect through its underbelly. You plug in your gb, gbc or gba carts in the device, put in the software optical disk into the GCN and voilą! Instant Gameboy gaming on your TV!

I wonder whether the old Super Gameboy-compatible games will retain their color palette. I particularly think of Donkey Kong 94, which has a color palette when used with the SGB, but only has a sequoia (ie. reddish) hue when played with a Gameboy Color or GBA.

BTW, the May launch date is for North America.

Why'd they choose Super Gameboy? Why not Gameboy Advance or Gameboy Color?

The Super Gameboy was a device for the SNES that allowed it to play GB games. As Lady Jaye stated this new model will allow the GC to run GB, GBC and GBA titles on your gamecube (basically a Super Gameboy 3).

Woo hoo! Just in time for my birthday! Well, that is if Nintendo doesn't pull the classic "Let's push back the date!"

Excellent! I love the games on the gameboy Advance. Personally I think they're some of the best games that are coming out on any system of the day now. (keep it simple stupid!) I find myself playing the GBA a lot lately -- however I don't have the best of eyes. I can barely see the screen without the gameboy about a foot in my face ... and not to mention I have yet to find a comfortable way to lie in bed and be able to play the gba without becoming sore. I think I just found a reason to buy a gamecube! Well, besides wanting to play the new Zelda and Metroid games.

I too have been waiting for a new super gameboy.....This should help boost sales of the GC, espessially if NIntendo never releases a back-lit GBA...I can finally play advance wars on my big screen yea!!!!.

Woohoo, now I can finally play all of my GBA games...the GBA itself is just too small for my hands to play comfortably.

I've been regretting not getting the Super Game Boy so this definitely makes me happy (you can bet I won't make the same mistake this time).

I love the Game Boy games but I personally tend to favour using the consoles when I'm at home and the games go unfinished until my next plane/long car trip. Maybe now I'll finish them off more quickly (and, of course, buy more which is even more fun :) ).

I'm dying to see how Castlevania: Circle of the Moon (which I'm in the middle of right now actually) looks on a TV screen...

Did you realize when the device do get released, GC's library would effectively have over 1,000 games to play with? Not quite close to N64 with Tristar 64 (all N64 + SNES + NES games) but still us GC fanboys can start whupping XBox fanboys! LOL LOL LOL LOL

If they push it back to June it'll be just in time for my birthday :)

It looks like you can use a link port to link another GBA to it. I am thinking that this means you will also be able to link 2 of the Super GBAs together using to NGCs and 2 Tvs. That would be so cool.

Here's a question for the idiots: go here: http://www.gamespy.com/articles/november02/gbplayer/ and then click on the GB adapter picture to see larger image. If you look on the front, you'll see what looks like standard GBA connector. Does that mean I can use the GC <-> GBA link cable and plug that adapter into controller port 1 and let the GC play by itself? :D :D

Three things that have been officially addressed by Nintendo as "We don't know yet":

1. We don't know yet if the GB Player will allow direct linking between GC and GB games (for example linking metroid fusion and metroid prime without using the GCN-GBA Link Cable). However, since you need a "boot" disc to use the GB Player, this may not work out right. Details are forthcoming.

2. We don't know yet if the GB Player will allow for Game Boy Advance games to be played online. This is a pretty neat idea that I think would be really fun. Imagine all future two and four player link compatible games (think Mario Bros. and Advance Wars) were also online capable through the GC. Again Details are forthcoming.

3. We don't know yet if peripherals such as the Game Boy Printer or eReader will work with the GB Player, but it is very likely.

I think both of these ideas would kick much ass (especially the online GBA game thing). But alas, there are no details yet. Oh, and for reference, the price in Japan is approx. US41.50. Oh, and one thing we do know is yes, you can connect two Gamecubes with two GB players via a link cable and go head to head on two different TVs. Can you imagine 4 player Mario Kart with 4 TV's? </drool>

"Super Game Boy, along with Color Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, and Game Boy Color, helped Nintendo keep its original Game Boy technology for 12 years, far longer than any other system has lasted. "

Not true. Atari 2600 last 15 years (1977-92).

Now I have 2 reasons to buy a GameCube:
(1) Skies of Arcadia
(2) Gameboy compatibility

Ha. For some reason my wife has something against the GBA. Every time she sees me playing it around the house she give me a pained look and says "isn't that for playing in the car or something?"

Not any more, baby. And since she's a VG illiterate outside of Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo EX Alpha Deluxe Cherry On Top, she won't even realize that it's a GB/GBC/GBA game cranking on the 27" set! I love it. Now I will surely get a GCN.
