The location near me is a resturant. Atleast, after looking around for 30 minutes, I'm pretty sure that it is. If I can pull my dad away from work with his GPS and go down there, it would be excellent.

Bungie says there's no Halo 2 playable demo coming out til after the game ships...if this is it, then they must be damn good liars.

There HAS to be something going down...
Maybe its just a ploy to get people together and talk or something, I dunno. Flashmobs?

There's been something going on about this date and the ilovebees website for a while. Anyone else see the movie trailer?

One of the locations is a clothing store in Berkeley... I don't think it's very probable that anything will be going down

The locations are virtually all random spots: Wal-Marts, Restuarants, Street Corners.

The only thing that they all have in common are pay-phones. Virtually every address on the list has a confirmed pay-phone at the coordinates listed.

I was going to go to the only one in West Virginia, but I didn't really feel like taking off work and driving 2 hours out of my way (to a middle of nowhere town) to do it. Here's hoping it's just another part of the puzzle, and that it will continue from here.

6 locations in Berkeley alone (although for some reason they're all lised as "oakland"). Interesting.

EDIT: the site now has two wav files active, with interesting results:

This is damned strange. Interesting as hell though :)

Heh, I just love how Bungie plays with our minds.

Well, I didn't go. Couldn't get a ride. Hell, I wouldn't have known what to say anyways. Now that I think about it though, I'm postitive there is a payphone there. If I drive by there anytime soon I'll confirm.

it seems that as soon as one set of coordinates gets two proper responses, it releases these sound files. two more went up:

http://phil.reddwarf.is-a-geek.net/bees/

that's a mirror that will most likely be updated as new .wav files are processed. there are four up, parasites is hilarious.

Okay, I've read all of this thread and the other information I can find, but....

I still can't make much sence of this.

It seems like some kind of puzzle, like what happened with the release of AI a few years back. But what does it all MEAN?

It seems like some kind of puzzle, like what happened with the release of AI a few years back. But what does it all MEAN?

It is a puzzle, a highly complicated one that's also a marketing gimick. Basically what it boils down to is that Halo the game is only part of a bigger ongoing plotline set in the Halo universe that Bungie have created.

Currently as it stands there are now several books out that extend the overall story of the Halo world. **spoiler** The first book to come out (The Fall of Reach) finishes just before the story picks up in the game. **end spoiler** I'm not sure where the other books fit into all this as I've not read them yet.

The www.ilovebees.com website is part of all this. The URL flashed up at the end of the E3 movies for a brief second. Since then quite a lot of people have been pieceing together the plotline of what appears to be an AI from Halo that's somehow fouind itself in the webserver for ILoveBees and has corrupted the site trying to find out what's happened to it.

In the latest twist, people had to use the GPS Co-ordinates given on the ILB website to find payphones which would ring at a given time. If they gave the correct password and codeword they got the next piece of the puzzle.

The entier timeline can befound at http://www.thebruce.ca/ilovebees/ and is quite an inteesting read for those into these kinda things.

I actually pieced all of that together, but it's nice to have it in a succient form anyway. :)

So, I wonder what the correct password was....and if anyone actually gave it. From what I read, there were many phone problems due to static and outside noise and what not. This most recent attempt may have hurt more then it helped.

And what do the voice recordings mean? They seem to strongly hint at some of the plot and gameplay for Halo 2 -- something about a AI that has been damaged and needs help in being recovered.

I just recently finished Halo and I assumed the sequel would revolve around one of two possible ideas -- the Mster Chief undertakes the original Spartan mission to board a Coveant warship, find their homeworld, and end the war OR the MC goes off to find other Halo's and stop the Flood for good.

Perhaps it's neither?

The plot thickens. :)

Quite a few people managed to give the correct passwords and have managed to unlock most of the WAV files in the ILB links page. From what I've read you either had to say "Melissa" or "The Operator" and then state which group you were in (i.e. blip or jersey). If you got both right you'd be played the WAV file for that group. The counter would then go up. Once two people got it then the WAV was released on the web. Yesterday someone got lucky and managed to snag the Dizzy WAV without it being released due to an admin error...though some people are now worrying about this due to a messgae that was on the main page warning about punishing "minor transgressions with excessive force". Some see that as cheating and therefor a minor transgression as if the Dizzy WAV was released as a test to see if people would cheat or not.

Some are going to try again today to get the ones people have missed as the code indicates that the phones will stay "live" until something else happens to shut them down.

Man I should have gone... but I still don't get it. Is this an official Bungie thing? Are the payphones gonna be called again?

Both Bungie and MS are keeping quiet about the whole thing. However it's hard to believe that they don't have a hand in it concidering the ILB ULR was hidden in the E3 trailer.

As for the payphones, see my post above. Noone seems to be 100% sure if the phones will be called again or not. If the one that's near you is one of the already released WAVs then the only reason to go would be to see if it actually rings or not at the given time.

So there's a seperate WAV for EACH of the phones on that list?

And just how did people figure out that they were GPS cordinates? That's the one thing I did'nt get in reading about this.

All in all, it does sound pretty exciting -- too geeky for me, though. ;)

On a related note, there's also supporting evidence that Halo 2 will be released next month as opposed to the original date.

Yes and No. :) There's a WAV file for each of the groups. 7 Phones to a group.
Each WAV is a snippet of several different recordings which people are now piecing together to form coherant conversations. Obviously, some of the pieces are missing as some of the WAV files have yet to be released.

And just how did people figure out that they were GPS cordinates? That's the one thing I did'nt get in reading about this.

From what I gather it was just one of these things. The seasoned ARGs (There's been other games like this before) would've worked that out quite quickly once they appeared on the site.

It's certainly interesting. I've really only been reading the suspicions and results of everyone elses work rather than actively participating but it's certainly something I'd love to get in on on the ground floor off. I don't think I'd be quite as dedicated or as able to work out some of the stuff that these folks have though...don't have that amount of time or patience. :D

On a related note, there's also supporting evidence that Halo 2 will be released next month as opposed to the original date.

So far I think that's been officially discounted. Mainly because Bungie have said there will be no early release or a demo before the 9th. They've apparently also been deleting any reference to early release dates from the Bungie messagebaords and even going so far as to ban the persitant "It's coming out early!" people.

If you read the weekly Halo 2 updates, they're still finishing the game...there's no way it'll be done before the release date.
