This is great! Is this a scaled down version of the Atari 7800 version of the same name? This truly is an example of how so many games were attempted on the 2600, you got love that! I wonder how many other games are out there that we dont know about O_O

What a nice gesture Joe! I'm sure I speak for the Atari 2600 collecting community when I say "Thanks" for bringing this long-lost proto to the public! We appreciate your generousity! Another Rumor Mill game now is brought to the light of day by the CGE/DP gang!

Does this mean AA and DP are buddies again? Woohoo!! Let the good times roll. :D

?
I don't see what this has to do with AA - the credit is all DP's :D

:D

Whoops, my bad. I didn't know there were two (or more :yipes: ) of these floating around. I thought this was a joint venture. Sorry for the confusion. :embarrassed:

Y'know, this just has to make you feel good all over. Not only is this a fully playable prototype that hasn't been seen before, but how often do people get the original owners permission first? Not only permission, but those guys were willing to sign over the rights to their unreleased game to CGE to do as they wish. It's just great! Way to go, Sean, John, and Joe!

You're welcome but the real guy to thank is Howard Delman from Videa, who made this possible for you. All we did was provide a conduit for gamers to play his game.

John Hardie and Sean Kelly deserve credit for the discovery as well, as they negotiated the deal with Mr. Delman.

I certainly hope you still release Meltdown as a cartridge even though you released the ROM. Not all of us play games on the computer or use the cuttle cart. I loved the game at CES!

I have a question as an impartial observer / Atari collector:

If legal permission is given, that doesn't mean DP are now copyright owners of the game/rom does it?
So if the game is made in cart form and sold, who gets the profits? Is it some kind of split?
Just curious, I'd love to see it in cart form to purchase but unfortunately I don't get to these gaming expos.

Kudos for not only releasing the game to the public but also for handling the responses in this thread in a calm and intelligent matter. A class act on all counts.

John,

Please release Tumbleweeds, even as a demo we are still interested in it.

Sniderman-

Sorry that you think my request was not appropriate, I do apologize if you think that. :o

John and Sean do know me pretty well, and they will be the first to tell you that I am NOT a ROM begger. It is true I don't post a lot here, mainly because I have nothing to add.

But sometimes it does pay to ask. I am interested in all 5200 games, so seeing Tumbleweeds would be a great thing IMHO.

Sorry if I offended anyone. :(

Allright allright... as much as I dislike a good number of "original' 2600 games, with all the hype here I supposed I'll snag this and give it a shot on the ol' cuttlecart :D

I've been playing this a bit on my CC2. I can maybe see why it never saw commercial release. Graphically speaking, it's not really all that interesting looking. It is perhaps not the most marketable of games. The game play, however, is quite another story. It's quite a fun little game. It's not dissimilar to the Rooster Ranch stage in "Cracked" but much better executed. I'm really enjoying it. Thanks again!

I've been having a ton o' fun with both this one and Targ today. I hadn't even read the instructions for Meltdown, but I found it was incredibly instinctive to just play it by ear, so to speak. And Targ, of course, who doesn't know how to play Targ? (Or, as I first encountered it, Crossfire from the Apple II days?)

Again, well done to all involved in unearthing any new goodness from the good old days.

Here's a daft question that no one's probably worried about, but the nature of the licensing beast never fails to fascinate me - any idea why, after Coleco made a decent splash with stuff like Venture and Mousetrap, 20th Century Fox Games would've suddenly sprung for the Targ license? This would've been their first arcade license, wouldn't it - possibly a jump-on-the-bandwagon thing?

I thought Targ was CBS, not 20th Century Fox?

Curious why Coleco didn't license that game.

I believe that Targ was originally a Coleco license - wasn't it featured among the original artwork on the ColecoVision boxes at launch? Maybe they sat on it for too long and CBS picked it up? Or maybe, like Mr. Do!s Castle, they did program it but it was to be released by another company?

IIRC the Coleco(vision) games was Spectar. I know I have a catalog that shows it, but I'm not sure where it is right now...

Gah! Yeah, I'm getting even dumber. Russ is right, I had confused Targ with Spectar. They both have that "TAR" thing in there. :) Good thing nobody had an old arcade game with "guitar" in the title or my head a splode!

Perhaps the 7800 version was based on the 2600 one?

The 7800 game uses a lightgun. It's really not very much like this 2600 version at all.
