I've played it, and have only this to say:
I will be buying Donkey Konga IMMEDIATELY once it's released, AND I'll be buying enough bongos for a 4-player setup.
Then I'm locking up the room of doom in order to play the game, NONSTOP, for three days.
Donkey Kong + Bongos + rhythm game = HEAVEN.
Seriously, a game featuring the timeless combination of a monkey banging on drums, with some clapping thrown in for good measure? You'd better believe I'm all over it.
Can't wait. Donkey Konga can't get here soon enough. :)
And for those that haven't seen it just yet, dig this groovy Japanese commercial:

Guess I'm out $50 for the game plus another $140 for the 4 sets of bongos.
But (to my bongo-playing-monkey-obsessed mind at least) that's still a smokin' deal. I just can't wait to buy this game. :) I will rock plenty of Donkey Konga into the wee hours of every morning the second it hits the street.

Do you have a source on this?
I'd be very surprised if it's true.
I don't see how Nintendo can sell the game without a bongo set. I wouldn't be surprised if the $49.99 game came with one set and each additional set sold for $34.99.
Think about it. Nintendo has never really screwed its customers like that before.
"Stack-Up" could've come without the blocks.
"Gyromite" could've come without the gyros.
"Donkey Kong 64" could've come without a jumper pack.
"Animal Crossing" could've come without a memory card.
"Legend of Zelda: The Four Swords Adventures" could've come without a link cable.
Fuck, they even tossed a strategy guide in with "Earthbound."
I'm not saying that your claim is bogus. I'd just be very surprised (read: mildly disappointed) if I had to shell out additional cash for a set of bongos.
Here's hoping you're wrong.

I've never played a Rhythm game that uses instruments. Hell, I've never played DDR. But If you've been brushing up on your "Jasoco's Posts" History, you'd know I have been waiting for this game since it first came out in Japan.
I was totally happy to see that Nintendo decided to release it in the US. And it's also nice to see that other games are taking advantage of the bongos too.
I haven't even tried the game and I'm ready to pay full price for it. I think it's the collector in me. For one thing, it'll have a cool box. For another, it's a rhythm game, usually those are niche, and I wanted to buy one before it became as common as Samba De Amigo. And lastly, I've really started to fall in love with Nintendo all over again lately. If I had to sell off a large portion of my collection, I would keep all my Nintendo stuff. Because Nintendo is a piece of history. And to me, Nintendo is damn cool to collect for.

While walking around Circuit City the other day, checking out the DVDs, I spotted something I could hardly believe....my wife over in the video game section, playing Donkey Konga on the Nintendo kiosk. "So, $10 reserves this game," she said.
O_O
I immediately had to go home and change my shorts...my wife would never ask that question. This game is so friggin' addictive, my wife actually goes into the game stores with me just so she can play Donkey Konga.
I am SO reserving this game! And according to the guy at EB, Nintendo is rumored to be releasing additional "instruments" and music games so one person can play the bongos, another...who knows, a tamborine or something. Oh yeah, I'll be getting this.
I hope the bongos are durable. I can just see some kid (like I would have 30 or so years ago) really getting in to the game, and whackin' the crap out of the bongos, promptly destroying them. LOL

To be fair, while it says "additional...", nowhere does it actually state that the game will in fact come with a controller. That would be wonderful, but it wasn't in writing on that link.
I got my $49.99 for game without controller figure this way: While at EB last week, I asked one of my favorite employees to look up the release date of Donkey Konga for me, as well as the pre-order information. As she did that, I asked to confirm that a bongo controller would be coming with the game as well. She didn't know, so she made a phone call (to where, I don't know). According to whoever she called, EB would be receiving the *game only* at $49.99 with all controllers being sold on their own at $34.99 each. Disappointed, I did not pre-order.
So that's that. I'm not saying that I personally want to have to buy the controller on its own, but I won't be convinced until I see it for myself. Before you write her off as another one of those lousy EB employees, I can assure you that the folks at this store are nothing but professional. She may have been misinformed (which would, in turn, make me misinformed), but she's certainly not trying to screw with anyone or present false information.
Here's to hoping it's $49.99 for game + bongos. Just show me proof and I'll place my pre-order immediately!

According to Don (TVs Hasselhoff), a manager at Gamestop, the computer has a listing for Donkey Konga w/ controller for $49.99. Also the little conversation I had with the Nintendo rep while in the store. I know Nintendo's been weird lately, but there's no way they would do something this crazy. Also:
Nintendo is calling it the "DK Bongo" in the United States -- it will be packed with the game when it arrives later this year

I got it today! Its lots of fun.... but i get so sweaty trying to play it. I bought it liek 10 mins after school ended, and the box of them wasn't even open yet. The one thing that annoys me is the ugly case for the disc. Everything on it is written in both english AND spanish. :o
And I believe the extra controllers don't ship till the 30th. I heard it form the chunkster.

I don't have pics of the box, but one bit of interesting yet useless info is that there appear to be three languages on the box--English, French, and Spanish. Also, when you open the packaging, Nintendo slipped in a multilanguage manual in addition to the English one that comes inside the game itself. I've never had a game with two manuals before. Model cars, bicycles, and cheap Walmart furniture, yes, but never a game.
I'm wondering if MAYBE there's a way to take apart a Wavebird controller and somehow combine it's wireless elements with the Bongo controller so it doesn't need to be plugged in to the GC.. I'm sure it could be done. It would be so nice to simply pass the bongo off to a friend instead of making them come to the controller.

All the Gamestops in my area are getting 2 per store, and then after that, who knows. The district manager said "you might not get anymore, ever", but he is an idiot. If the game sells very well, I would imagine they would be easier to come by, but something tells me this game isn't going to sell THAT well. :o But they should be arriving tomorrow, to Gamestop stores at least.

Sounds like a David Britt assignment to me. ;)
Ha ha, the sad thing is I was thinking about how possible that might be after reading his comment. I suppose it depends on how tightly linked the RF transceiver is to the actual controller hardware in a Wavebird. But I don't have a Wavebird, so I've got no easy way of finding out. Heh.

chunky and i just picked this up today. so totally fun :)
just one complaint, when you're playing two player, the other person clapping registers on your controller :/ screwed our combos up a couple of times.

You can adjust the mircophone sensitivity in the options menu. Also, instead of clapping you can tap the side of your bongo to achieve the same effect as a clap.

I got this today. We did a round. My brother did the Bongoing and I clapped. I noticed it seems very sensitive. It kept picking up background sounds even the TV sound.
We laughed all the way through the Pokémon theme. It made me think of that video I saw a while back with a grown man dressed like Ash singing the theme song.
I'll have to practice. I have NEVER been good at rhythm games before. Not that I've played a lot, but I just seem to have bad timing. But I was doing semi good with this one. I bought it solely for the box, I didn't want it to become an expensive Samba De Amigo type niche product down the road. I wish I could try out Samba one day and I'd like to try DDR sometime (When no one's looking at first.) but for now I can get used to this. I'm looking forward to Jungle Beat and am hoping for an expansion later on.
I am wondering if they have plans for other instruments later on. That would be neat.
MY problem is that I have no place convenient to keep it from falling on the floor. Guess I have to sit indian style on the bed.
I have a feeling this was a risk for Nintendo, but I'm glad they took it.

i have a feeling that you are the kind of people that doesn't play with a gameboy on public places because you are afraid someone might see you.

DDR is completely different. I'll play a GB in public. But I won't "Try" to dance in front of people until I can do it without looking like a dumbass. It's hard to look like a Dumbass when you are playing your GB.
