What do you think? With Thanksgiving a mere week away, competition for our holiday dollar is getting more and more fierce. Do you think any of the companies will drop their prices again?

I doubt it. They pretty much have the market covered.. If anyone should lover prices it should be Xbox.

X-box already did lower thier price of 299.99 to 199.99 and it comes with 2 great games.
A friend of mine that works for Best buy has said to me that the ps2 will drop to 149.99 this X-mas Season. I hope it's True.
Thanks

Yes, we've gotten an email through home office I think that XBox & PS2 will drop to $149.99 and XBox will still have the 2 games in tote for that price. We've also heard that Gamecube might be dropping to $129.99. This all being the day after Thanksgiving if it DOES happen. But, even home office has stated this is a "Rumor from a reliable source". Oh well, I shelled out full $ on each release day. Screw the devote follower. >:(

The PS2 is outselling the other two by a huge margin, so unless the XB and GC drop first, no way will the PS2 drop. I could see the GC dropping, but an XB drop looks iffy, considering they basically have already done 2 price drops (the free DVD kit and the pack-in game for 199) in the last couple months. It'll be interesting to see - in any case, a used XB at most stores is 149 already, so if you want it at that price, that's the way to go.

Well we shall see in a few weeks but I'd say that one of them will drop their price. PS2 for $179.99 could happen. The GC will not lower its price this season IMOP.

Not an unreasonable assumption but I disagree with it. Since they're a year ahead and have recovered more of their R&D money I think they'd be smart to lower prices again to try to stick it to Nintendo and Microsoft. When in a position of power you can't sit back on your laurels.
I'm with Achika, although I don't really feel slighted by the price drops. You have to know that's gonna happen when you're a launch day purchaser. Next time around I won't own more than one machine on launch day though.

PS2 has the market share....they would lose more money on systems if they dropped the price....since they have a large lead in the market at this point, I highly doubt they'd cut into their profits by cutting the price again......if the other systems did cut, yes then maybe sony would cut prices just to hold on to market share.

Udisi nailed it. My Econ prof always makes sure to tell us that we remember that business is not a charity. Sony is in the business of making profits.
Assume the cost is $150 to make a system for Sony. They can make 50 profit + profit of games, or 0 profit and presumably > profit off games. Unless the profit from games can overcome the 50 extra bucks, they won't drop. Once sales start slowing, Sony will drop. I'd bet in March or April.
To note, I don't believe that Sony ever dropped the price of PSone except in response to teh 2nd place's moves (saturn then 64 then dc).

Sony didn't even need to lower it to $200,they would still be selling a shit load of systems. And yes, this poll is lame. x_x :D O.o

It's not that it's lame, it's just that it's the end of November. A price reduction would have been announced WELL over a month or 2 ago.

@SW - Not necessarily. If there's going to be a price drop, it will likely happen right before Thanksgiving weekend. The other possibility is that stores will start selling the systems at 149.99 unofficially, which is just as good as lowering the MSRP.

I doubt the PS2 will drop the price, seeing how GTA: Vice City is selling out everywhere you look, and people will buy PS2's just to play the game.

Yea, but if you could get an Xbox for 149.99 and a GC for 129.99 for the Xmas season, what do you think the parents are going to see? Vice City? Nope.. That the PS2 costs 199 but you have these two choices over here that are much cheaper. Plus these parents are now old NES heads.. loyalty to the god of the consoles, they buy a GC..
If MS or Nintendo lower price Sony has no choice but to follow to be competitive during "the" shopping season.
As for announcing a price change it was mentioned that these companies are not charities. If you knew that you could get a PS2 two weeks from now for 149.99 you wouldn't get one this weekend for 199.99. Everytime there is a price drop there are 1000's of pissed of kids somewhere in the world.

Last Christmas the PS2 was $50 higher than the GameCube and still was the best seller. It's what kids *demand* that matters, not a $50 price differential. Reason: Parents don't want Junior opening up the Christmas wrapping and saying, "You shitheads... I wanted the Playstation 2, not a Gabecube! Wah!!!" Parents will spend an extra $50 just to have some peace.

The NES brought video gaming back from extinction...Sony seemed to have made everyone a gamer of one type or another with a PSX/2 in almost every home...

They might not ACTUALLY bring the price down until thanksgiving weekend, but it would have been ANNOUNCED a while ago.

Sony ALWAYS drops first.
Sony ALWAYS drops first.
Get it yet? That's their MO. If it doesn't happen this time, I'll be shocked.

How far in advance was the last price drop announced? To retailers, MAYBE a week in advance. From what we heard, it would be black friday (day after thanksgiving) AKA THE BIGGEST SHOPPING DAY OF THE YEAR. If anyone has ever gone out on this day to shop, you know the crowds are HUGE.

OK, you 2 have a point there. The last price drop WAS a surprise, and Sony DOES usually like to spring price drops on people. Before that last price drop, I had (almost) always heard of price drops at LEAST a few months in advance. I just think they would have done it by now, most parents like to shop for their kids BEFORE christmas actually gets here :) A price drop 2-3 weeks ago would have been GREAT for holiday sales. A price drop 3 weeks before Christmas isn't going to have quite the same effect IMO.

Price Drop information doesn't usually stay a secret for very long. Plus tactically it's pretty easy to tell when something is going to drop in price. This year seemed a little wonky to me since the last price drop already occured earlier this year, hence the poll. If this were, say, the housing industry, pundits on TV would be debating whether or not interest rates would be dropping right now, but since we don't have that option, and the G4 network wasn't able to lure Lou Dobbs in, a poll seemed like a good idea.
Speaking of which, thanks for all the input guys, this is a great debate.
