Hello...

The question is the one in the topic... But to make it easier I'll state my case... :D
I just collect games! It's the games I care about the condition, if they are mint, complete, and all that. For me, the systems are just to play my games, so I don't really worry if my controller falls on the floor during an intense game or if my system travels a lot and all that. I don't really worry about the system, I just try to enjoy them so I can play my game collection.
What about you? Do you just collect games? Or also systems, like some special editions, like those blue Dreamcast, etc? And care a lot about keeping your systems really mint?
I think this could be an interesting discussion... :D

Regards!

I'm mostly a game collector. This is because I am cheap. I do have a few systems I barely use though. I have a broken Famicom and original Game Boy that I use for display purposes, and a Sega CD that's basically just for Snatcher.

I collect both systems and their games.I try not to collect for systems I have no interest in owning.

As for the condition, I prefer the fairly new games to be complete and in mint condition and the older games to be in good condition, some wear and creases on their boxes and manuals are ok and even if their missing the boxes and or manuals, its fine with me.

All systems must have the original box and I really dont care too much for limited edition type stuff like the Mountain Dew Xbox and etc... Dont get me wrong I would take it, but Im not gonna lose sleep if I dont get one.

You confuse me a little. You say you dont really care about the system and if it travels alot because you only use it to play your games. Now, if you dont look after the system and it breaks, How do you plan on enjoying those games? I try to look after my whole collection for years of enjoyment.

You forgot about option 3. I am a system collector, and I only buy the games I am interested in playing. So, while my actuall games collection is not too terribly big, I have a lot of systems. 8-)

I only collect what I'm going to play.
When it comes to the games I prefer complete and in nice condition and I often pass up loose carts unless it's a game I really want to play or a lot of games for a super good deal. This is especially true of my 16 bit games for Genesis and SNES, I just can't stand loose carts.

I wish all my systems were boxed and that I had at least one back up console for every system I own but as long as I have a clean working console to play my games on then I'm happy, for now. I do intend to aquire at least one back up and everything boxed sooner or later and i have my sights set on getting a CIB white Japanese Saturn some day.

I also like peripherals and controllers but I usually only buy what I'm going to play with, usually.

The only exception to my collecting habits are my Virtual Boy and GBA/SP.
I don't play my VB and I'll collect loose carts for either system if I find'em in the wild and they interest me.

I'm with evilness on this one. I get games that I want to play (mostly), which is why I have systems like both Famicoms and 2 Wonderswans.

to me, whats the point of having a console if it isnt to play games on? so personally, both.

Just games for me... I like the idea of having a couple systems and a lot of games.Plus, I dont have enough space for a bunch of systems. :o

Sometimes I'll buy games for systems that I don't have (with the intention of buying the system later), and sometimes I buy systems which I don't have games for (again with an intention of buying everything else later), but some stuff you can't let pass you by unless you want to wait five years for another to come your way (i.e. a SC-3000 that I bought half a year ago).

I can't really think of a reason I'd WANT a system without games, or the opposite...even if you can emulate some systems with the game CD (PC-Engine Super CD-ROM^2 for example) I'd still want the system.

i collect both games and systems......i love the look of having a bunch of different systems hooked up and ready to play, but, you need to have the games or your systems will just be paperweights

Pretty much just games. I don't care that much if I get a system loose or a bit beat up (although I do keep all packaging if I have it, and I definitely want my systems to at least work well and be clean). If I get multiples of my systems, I mostly just sell them off, but with my current living arrangements, it's good for me to have at least two of all the systems I'm really big on. I'll hold onto different variations of the same system and controllers, so usually I'll just keep one of each kind.

There are a bunch of systems I still want (and in some cases, need, because I already have games for them), but game buying always seems to get the priority. Systems are simply a means to play them, for me.

Hmm...I've got 7 Genesis/Mega Drive units, think I want any more?

...the scary thing is, I do! Not even halfway to a complete collection of MDs/Gennies LOL

Both for me! I collect GB games but I also keep my eye out for the rarer old systems. my best find yet: Famitsu Game Boy Light still in its box! On the other hand I enjoy playing all these games I've never played before as I come accross them.

I collect everything. Systems, games, whatever. Got quite a few systems and a fair amount of games for each, it's almost even down the line between most of them.

I'm a game collector. I do not have much interest in system variations.

I collected variants to systems, and have like 15-20 atari's. BUT.
This christmas, it's all going, Collecting systems takes up too much space,
telegames heavy 6 switch, telegames 6 switch, telegames 4 switch, atari 6, atari 4, atari heavy 6, atari refurb, atari black, atari jr, atari jr with big rainbow, columbia house atari, gemini, etc...etc... just too damn much, so they're going within 3 months.
Something like 5-7 intellivisions too. Why can't companies be more like coleco. ONE MODEL. Nice and easy.

Both, and throw in accessories as well. I'll collect different versions of a system as quickly as I'll collect different label variations on a game.

All around experience baby!

i collect systems with limits, i'm just picking up the major variations and skipping the minor changes. even when i get the major variations only the rarest will go on display. for example on the 2600 i have the 6 switch, the junior, gemni and video arcade II but not every single atari and telegames shell change, i only want it if it makes the system look like a new beast. i dont care about minor ones like the round or oval buttons saturn or a 4 or 2 port 5200.

i've been thinking more about N64 console collecting these days, although until now i've held out on starting. all those pretty colors  , you just know that would look nice all together, even with the pikachu one. something tells me that products in clear colored plastic cases (the i-mac look) are going to be emblem of our tech times, like woodgrain was to the late 70s.

I equally collect games and systems. I'm a big fan of label variations as much as system variations. Both physical and internal, to a certain extent.

I'll keep games/boxes that have a different text label size or a graphic compared to text.

I'll keep systems that have color or major physical attributes changed, even internal. If it has the same physical attributes, but benefits internally some way, I'll only keep the better one.

The PS2 for example, playing DVD+R/DVD-R movies won't work with the SCPH-3000x or earlier, but works for the SCPH-3900x or later. This is just an easy plus to consider when choosing which of your PS2s to keep when they look exactly the same.

For other hardware I like to stay away from 3rd party.

Hmmm, this got me thinking. While I'm more interested in collecting games than systems, I've realized that I'm much more likely to hold onto a console or accessory variation than a game variation. I pretty much keep just one copy of each game. If I have, say, an original version of the game and a greatest hits/player's choice/whatever version, I'll keep whichever is in best condition, or if they're similar, I'll keep the original.
